CHS Soccer Drops Non-District Match on Saturday to Siegel

CHS forward Breyer Taylor(left) attacks the Siegel defense in Saturday’s home match

Missed scoring opportunities are usually bad things in high school soccer.  On Saturday, Siegel missed 4 good scoring opportunities were a good thing and kept Coffee County in the game until the final whistle.  The Raiders had their final shot stopped at just under 4 minutes remaining as they fell to the visiting Stars 2 to 1 on Saturday at the Raider Soccer Field.  Lafredo Ramirez was strong in goal for the Raiders with 2 great saves in the 27th and 29th minute before a long Siegel volley found the back of the net in the 36th minute.  The Raiders got a good chance to tie it on a free kick at the 37th minute, but the feed to the back post was just wide.  Siegel’s first missed opportunity came in the 39th minute as Siegel got a shot past Ramirez only to have Benjamin Reid make a spectacular save on a ball off the cross bar.  That sent the match into the half at 1 to 0.

After 10 minutes of good defensive play in the midfield by both teams, Siegel converted a corner kick with a header in front of the net at the 56 minute mark to make the score 2 to 0.  The Raiders battled back as Breyer Taylor, who was taken down inside the 18 yard box, volleyed his penalty shot through the Stars keeper to make the score 2 to 1.  The next 15 minutes saw the Stars offensive attack pepper the Raider defense with shot after shot.  Ramirez stopped the shots on frame that got to him, but the Raiders defense provided good support.  Siegel did get off good shots at the 66 minute mark that hit the frame and a shot at the open net at 70 that clanged off the upright.  Every Coffee County rally in the final 5 minutes was stopped dropping the Raiders in the non-district contest.  Coffee County returns to the home pitch on Thursday night for a pivotal district match with Shelbyville.  The match will kick off at 7:00 PM.

CCMS Baseball Gets Dramatic Come From Behind Win on Saturday

With the winning run at 3rd base and 1 out in the bottom of the 7th inning, it appeared that a fly ball to center field would lift Christiana to a win on Saturday over the Coffee County Middle baseball team.  Trace Bryant had other ideas as he snagged the fly ball and threw a seed to the plate to nail the runner trying to score sending the game into extra innings.  The Raiders added a pair of runs in the top of the 8th inning and escaped a no outs, bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the extra frame to capture the road win.  The Raiders also needed 2 runs in the top of the 7th inning as they trailed the Cougars 10 to 8.  Bryant and Cody Esslinger got big hits in the 7th to tie the game and set up the dramatic finish.  Speaking of the finish, pitcher Harley Hinshaw loaded the bases with no one out but his defense stepped up again as Tyler Surber, who was playing 3rd base for the first time this year, made 2 solid plays to help give Hinshaw the relief win.  Bryant was 4 for 4 at the plate for the Raiders while Colton Kerber was 3 for 4.  The win is the 7th in a row for Coffee County as the Raiders return to conference play this week with a 5 and 1 conference record.  The Raiders will take on Tullahoma this week on Monday and Tuesday in a pivotal series.  Both games will begin a t 5:00 PM with Monday’s game at Coffee County Middle and Tuesday’s game at Waggoner Park in Tullahoma.

Haley Richardson gave up a leadoff single to White County on the first pitch of the game, then held them hitless the rest of the day en route to a 15 to 0 win on Saturday at Coffee County Middle School.  Richardson was also productive at the plate with an RBI double in a 4 run first inning for Coffee County and an RBI single in an 11 run 3rd inning for the Lady Raiders.  Also hitting doubles for Coffee County were Sierra Mahar and Erin Ferrell with both coming in the penultimate 3rd inning as Coffee County sent 14 batters to the plate to end the game early via the mercy rule.  Grace Pippenger was 2 for 4 on the day with 3 RBI’s.  The win raises the Lady Raiders conference record to 7 and 1 as they begin a tough week of games on Monday when Tullahoma visits for a 5:00 PM game.  Coffee County travels to Tullahoma on Tuesday, before hosting North Franklin on Wednesday and Lincoln County on Thursday.
