Forsberg and Predators Melt Avalache

Pete Weber’s Postgame Report

Filip Forsberg

Filip Forsberg

The Nashville Predators ended their 4 game losing streak by beating the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 tonight. What could have been a snoozer was most certainly not. And if you were watching the game around the 10 minute mark of the 1st period, you know why.

The first period belonged to the Predators. After Colin Wilson got the good guys on the board first, Filip Forsberg dazzled everyone with what will undoubtedly be the goal of the year for the Predators. Though the Avs would eventually get a goal from Mikkel Boedker, the Preds were owning the game at that point and Forsberg’s play was a big, juicy exclamation point. Go watch the play again. You’ll be glad you did.

Unfortunately, the Preds momentum died after the 1st intermission. The Avs came out strong in the 2nd and Jarome Iginla, the Pred Killer, tied it up with 2 minutes left. The Preds didn’t register their first shot on Semyon Varlamov in the 2nd period until over 8 minutes in and, other than a couple of chances, had absolutely nothing working right. The Preds seemed to be asleep at the wheel since the amazing play by Forsberg.

The final period started with some swift skating and passing from Roman Josi, who found Mike Fisher wide open for the early lead. But the Avs would answer almost immediately on a tying goal by Shawn Matthias. Eventually Filip Forsberg found Craig Smith on the wing, who roofed home a frosty goal for a 4-3 lead. From there, the Preds would hold off the Avs, who needed at least 1 point to stay alive in the playoff race. The Preds fought like crazy to prevent Rinne from having to make the tough save, though he did on occasion. Rinne finished with 25 saves.

The Predators host the final regular season home game of the year on Thursday when they welcome Phoenix to the Bridgestone Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 PM and Thunder Radio will bring you the call of the game as part of the Fifth Third Bank/Nashville Predators Radio Network.

A Manchester man was arrested April 3 following a disturbance the day before at Taco Bell.
The arrest was made by Manchester Officer Brandon Tomberlin when he made contact with the subject after he observed a vehicle that the man was a passenger in.
Officer Tomberlin stopped the vehicle and spoke with passenger Herman Lee Williams Jr., 45, of Forrestwood Drive, Manchester who was allegedly involved in the dispute.
The arrest warrant says that when the officer started to search Williams, he felt an object in the man’s pocket. When the officer asked Williams what was in his pocket, he took off running.
Officers caught him and he allegedly told them that he had a syringe in his shirt that contained methamphetamines. Officers the tested the material in the syringe and found that it tested positive for meth.
According to a warrant obtained by the officer, Williams then admitted that he had thrown a baggie containing a small amount of methamphetamines away in an attempt to conceal from officers what had been in his pocket.
Williams was charged with a schedule II drug violation, evading arrest and aggravated assault. Bond was set at $22,500.

A 2012 Ford F-150 worth more than $10,000 was traded for $20 worth of cocaine, according to Murfreesboro Police.
Police in Murfreesboro responded to Middle Tennessee Boulevard on April 1, 2016 in reference to the theft of a motor vehicle. 45 Year old Troy Bracke told officers that he borrowed the truck from a man in Shelbyville and left the keys in the vehicle which is when the truck was said to be stolen. Police were called when the owner of the truck in Shelbyville got upset that his truck was never returned.
Bracke was later transported to the Murfreesboro Police Department where he met with Shelbyville Police Detectives who were working on the case. During the interview Bracke eventually told detectives that he traded the truck for $20 worth of cocaine.
The truck was located and returned to the rightful owner. Bracke was charged with theft in Bedford County and filing a false report in Murfreesboro.

Senate Vote would make Bible Official Book

BibleHaving already made a .50-caliber sniper gun the official state rifle, Tennessee lawmakers voted Monday to make the Holy Bible the state’s official book.
The state Senate gave final approval Monday on a 19-8 vote despite arguments the measure conflicts with a provision in the Tennessee Constitution that “no preference shall ever be given, by law, to any religious establishment or mode of worship.”
Republican Sen. Steve Southerland argued his bill is aimed at recognizing the Bible for its historical and cultural contributions to the state, rather than as government endorsement of religion.
Opponents argued the Bible would be trivialized by being placed alongside other state symbols like the official tree or rock.
The measure heads to Republican Gov. Bill Haslam, who hasn’t said whether he’ll issue a veto.

Less Testing for Tennessee Students

tn-logoTennessee’s top education official has announced that students will be spending less time taking standardized tests next year.
Tennessee Department of Education Commissioner Candice McQueen told news outlets over the phone on Monday that TNReady’s math and English tests will be shortened. The state has not yet made a decision about the length of the social studies test or whether the tests will be online or on paper.
Launched this school year, TNReady replaced the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program.
Educators and parents in some areas have criticized TNReady for months, saying the test robs students of valuable instructional time and is developmentally inappropriate. Delays in the administering of the tests also forced school districts to change schedules several times this spring.
