A Tullahoma man was arrested April 21 on multiple charges.
Nicholas Perrin Norris, 22, of Kings Ridge Boulevard, Tullahoma was charged with manufacture/delivery/sell of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to maintain control of his vehicle, evading arrest and simple possession.
Tullahoma Police Officer Brook Earhart stated in a report that around midnight she observed that the driver of a Green Toyota was failing to maintain control of his vehicle by crossing the right side of his lane.
Upon making a traffic stop, the officer allegedly smelled a strong odor, possibly of marijuana coming from the vehicle. A search of the vehicle yielded eight small baggies of green leafy substance which Norris allegedly admitted was marijuana. Also found in the vehicle was a metal grinder with drug residue inside it.
When the officer ran a warrant check she learned that he has two outstanding warrants in Coffee County for evading arrest and simple possession of drugs. The police report states that the marijuana and the grinder were found in a bag under the carpet of the vehicle.
Norris was booked into the Coffee County Jail under a bond of $7,500 and is to appear in Coffee County General Sessions Court June 2.

Short Springs Natural Area Update

short springsThe Historic Preservation Society of Tullahoma will meet on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at 7 pm at the former Red Cross building at 502 S. Jackson St. Members and interested persons are invited to attend.
The panel will give an update on Short Springs State Natural Area. The preservation of the then city-owned 608.6 acre site was initiated by the Historic Society in 1982 when member Paul Pyle moved that the area be preserved. The help of naturalist Dennis Horn and others were enlisted to look at various alternatives and their efforts resulted in the establishment of Short Springs State Natural Area in 1994. The panel, all of whom are members of the support group Friends of Short Springs, will discuss the beginnings, the significance, political issues and current activities.
Marjorie Collier is a retired engineer and a charter member of the Historic Society and Friends of Short Springs and has served as president of the Friends group.
Collier, reported that copies of the Historic Society’s 1914-15 publication,” Tullahoma Time-Table” are still available and may be purchased for $10 each at Couch’s Electrical Appliance Store at 117 N. Atlantic St. The issue features the story of the Dixie Highway, the first paved north-south highway in the country, built mostly between 1915 and 1917 and passed through Tullahoma.

Starting in 2017 Tennessee Voters will be allowed to Register to Vote Online

vote 3The General Assembly has passed legislation that would allow Tennesseans to register to vote online.
The House on Tuesday passed a bill that the Senate had earlier approved. The measure allows Tennesseans to go online to register to vote or update their registration records. Applicants would be directed to apply on paper if their name, date of birth or other identifying information could not be confirmed with the Department of Safety.
Rep. Gerald McCormick, the Chattanooga Republican who sponsored the House bill, said 29 other states and the District of Columbia already have an online voter registration system in place. He said there would be safeguards to discourage voter fraud.
The online voter registration system would in place by July 2017 if Gov. Bill Haslam signs the bill.

Raider Baseball Shuts Out Marshall County

Bradley King of CHS baseball

Bradley King of CHS baseball

Bradley King threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings and Jacob Langham came in for a 4 pitch save for Coffee County as the Red Raiders blanked Marshall County 2 to 0 on Wednesday evening at Powers Field. The pitching duo combined to throw 4 hitter as Coffee County continues to play strong baseball in the closing weeks of the season. The win evens the season series with Marshall County who beat Coffee County 6 to 3 on April 7th.
King entered the 7th inning with a 1 hitter but a walk and 3 hits had the bases loaded and only 1 out. Coach David Martin brought in Langham who coaxed a groundball back to the mound to key the 1-2-3 double play and end the game.
The Raiders got on the board in the 1st inning when Wyatt Day led off the game by reaching base on an error. A walk and a base hit put him at 3rd base where he scored on a balk. In the 4th inning, Nathaniel Tate led off with a double and scored on a double steal.
The Raiders were held to 6 hits on the game with Tate’s double being the lone extra base hit. Defensively, Coffee County was flawless as they did not commit an error.
Coffee County will be back in action on Saturday morning when they travel to Thompson’s Station for an 11 AM game with Independence.

CCMS Baseball Season Ends in CTC Quarterfinals

Hayden Skipper of CCMS Baseball

Hayden Skipper of CCMS Baseball

A 2 run rally in the top of the 7th inning was not enough to keep the Coffee County Middle School Red Raider baseball season alive on Wednesday as North Franklin eliminated the Raiders 7 to 5 in the CTC baseball tournament at Warren County.  The elimination game was moved up to Wednesday night instead of Thursday night due to the fear of rain on Thursday.

Coffee County took leads of 1 to 0 in the top of the 1st and 3 to 1 in the top of the 3rd before North scored 6 unanswered runs in the 3rd and 4th innings to take the lead for good.

In the 7th inning, Coffee County loaded the bases with no one out as Blanton Brown led off with a walk, Hayden Skipper doubled him to 3rd base and North Franklin intentionally walked Brandon Jernigan.  Braxton White drove in Brown with a single before Skipper scored on an error but the Raiders were retired on a double play to end the game.

Skipper finished the game with 3 hits in 4 at bats and 2 runs scored.  Jernigan was 1 for 1 but reached base after being walked twice and hit by a pitch.  Brown was 1 for 2 with a pair of walks and scored 3 runs for Coffee County.   The Raiders finish the season with a mark of 9 wins and 9 losses.

CCMS Soccer Season Draws to a Close

Soccer ballThe Coffee County Middle School soccer team saw their season draw to a close on Wednesday night in the opening round of the CTC post season tournament as they fell to Tullahoma 6 to 0. The Raiders played significantly better than the score indicates as they trailed 2 nil at the half after the Wildcats got a pair of 2nd chance goals off of rebounded shots. The Wildcats added a 3 goal midway through the 2nd half and Coffee County coach Kenny Lockhart emptied his bench in the last 12 minutes. Tullahoma, who did not have JV team members present to match subs, scored 3 times in the last 12 minutes against the younger Coffee County squad.

Braves’ 4-game Win Streak Snapped in Extras

Braves3Instead of extending their winning streak to five games and celebrating what would have been the first great catch of Mallex Smith’s career, the Braves watched Justin Turner deliver a double that proved decisive for the Dodgers in Wednesday night’s 5-3, 10-inning win at Turner Field.

After seeing closer Arodys Vizcaino notch three strikeouts in a scoreless ninth, the Braves watched former closer Jason Grilli put two on before Turner delivered his game-winner, which bounced out of Smith’s glove as he dove toward left-center field. Yasmani Grandal’s single off Alexi Ogando provided an insurance run for the Dodgers, who prevented the Braves from becoming the first team in Major League history to follow a 0-9 start (or worse) with five consecutive victories.
Dodgers starter Ross Stripling endured the first rough outing of his young career — allowing three runs (two earned) over 3 2/3 innings. Meanwhile, Julio Teheran battled through the lingering effects of the fever that led the Braves to push his start back one day. Teheran exited after throwing just 75 pitches through 5 1/3 innings and immediately saw Adrian Gonzalez greet Eric O’Flaherty with a game-tying, two-run homer in the sixth inning.
“It was a good ballgame,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “Julio, after dealing with his sickness, I felt he gave us everything possible that he could give us. We had a chance to win the ballgame, but we didn’t score any runs after the fourth inning.”
The Dodgers’ bullpen has picked up its starters in the first two games of the series. On Wednesday night, Adam Liberatore, J.P. Howell, Chris Hatcher, Yimi Garcia, Joe Blanton and Kenley Jansen combined to throw 6 1/3 innings of one-hit relief. That followed Tuesday’s effort of one earned run and three hits over four innings.
Stripling escaped a 26-pitch first inning unscathed, but he wasn’t as fortunate in the third inning. A.J. Pierzynski took advantage of a Corey Seager error by notching a two-out single that gave the Braves an early lead. Atlanta extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth, when Erick Aybar delivered a leadoff double and scored on Daniel Castro’s two-out, two-run single.
Adrian Gonzalez continues to wear out Braves pitching. He blasted a game-tying two-run homer in the sixth inning, giving him three hits in the first two games of the series. He’s now hit safely in 11 of the last 13 games against the Braves, batting .353 in that span (18-for-51). In 2016, he’s batting .429 (15-for-35) on the road.
Gonzalez’s home run was one of the three extra-base hits O’Flaherty has surrendered in nine at-bats against left-handed hitters. In addition, it blemished the effort provided by Teheran, who kept the Dodgers scoreless until Nick Markakis’ two-base error in the fifth set the stage for Joc Pederson’s RBI single. Teheran exceeded 89 mph with just five of his 75 pitches, but he still needed just 45 pitches to limit Los Angeles to two hits through the first four innings.
“If you don’t use O’Flaherty there, you’re going to use him in the seventh, like we did with [Hunter] Cervenka,” Fredi Gonzalez said. “So you’ve got to pick the spot where you feel you’re going to be successful.”
Matt Wisler will take the mound when Atlanta concludes this three-game series on Thursday at 11:10 a.m. CT. Wisler will attempt to avoid the “big inning” that tarnished his first two starts against the Cardinals and Nationals. The right-hander was slated to start Tuesday, but was pushed back two days after he notched his first save in a relief appearance on Sunday.
