8/21/16 — William R H Hazen

hazenWilliam R H Hazen, age 80 of Pelham, passed away on Tuesday, August 16 at
Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Funeral services are scheduled for
Sunday, August 21, 2016 at 2 PM at the First United Methodist Church in
Manchester with Rev. Dana M Brooks officiating. Burial will follow at
Warren Cemetery in Pelham. Visitation with the family will be Saturday,
August 20, 2016 from 5 – 8 PM at First United Methodist Church in
Manchester.

Mr. Hazen, a native of Wheeling, WV was the son of the late Harold Russell
and Irene Martin Hazen. He was a twenty year veteran serving in the U S
Marine Corps for ten years and then the U S Air Force for ten years. He
also worked for sixteen years at various civil service jobs. He retired
from AEDC as the real estate officer who maintained all aspects of the
property. During this time, he enjoyed speaking to groups about the
wildlife at the base. Mr. Hazen enjoyed woodworking, cooking, reading,
traveling and entertaining his friends. He loved to sing and play guitar.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Manchester and enjoyed
attending church activities. While living in New Mexico he enjoyed
missionary work serving as a pastor on the Apache Reservation. He was
instrumental in starting the Good Samaritan in Tullahoma and served as the
first president. He also was trained as an EMT in Nashville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, John
Hazen and one sister, Sara Hazen.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry Hazen of Pelham; one son, William David
Hazen and his wife, Sandra of Fayetteville; two daughters, Brooke Hazen of
Manchester and Stephanie Porter and her husband, Nate of Lexington, KY; two
sisters, Gerri Hazen of Port St. Lucy, FL and Elvira McMullen and her
husband, Gary of CA; four grandchildren, Will and Hannah Hazen and Morgan
and Kindra Banks; brother-in-law, Gary Mayes of Pelham and sister-in-law,
Peggy Goodman and her husband, Jimmy of Pelham.

Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Woman Charged with Theft and trying to enter Drugs into Jail

handcuffsA Tullahoma East Grundy Street resident was arrested for theft of items at Express Workout located on North Jackson Street.
According to a report by Tullahoma Police Officer Cody Brandon, Heather Michelle Jones, 44, was charged with theft of property over $500 and vandalism of stolen property.
Jones is accused of taking a Samsung Tablet and a Bose speaker system from Melony Hoots. According to the police report, the speakers were recovered as was the tablet but it had sustained damage to the glass display.
Jones was booked into the Coffee County Jail under a $7,500 bond. While she was being booked into the jail she was found to be in possession of nine Suboxone strips. The drugs were found in her shoe and hidden on her body.
An additional bond was set at $20,500 for introduction of contraband to a penal institution.
Jones is to appear in Coffee County General Sessions Court Sept. 1.

Tullahoma Police Investigating local store Theft

Tullahoma Police CarTullahoma Police are investigating the theft of a large quantity of cigarettes from a business on South Jackson Street.
According to a report by Officer Carl Pyrdom, around 4 a.m. Aug. 9 police answered a burglar alarm at South Jackson Discount Tobacco. The police report states that the officer noticed that the drive through window had been pushed from the window frame. After talking with the store owner Jay Kalidas Patel, it was determined that $2,229.81 of cigarettes and cigars were taken from the store, as well as $549 worth of Tennessee Lottery tickets.
Video surveillance showed three white males wearing masks, gloves and dark clothing forcing their way into the store and taking items from the shelves inside the store.

Law Enforcement Working together to stop Vandalism associated with 91st annual Coffee Pot

Coffee PotIn order to discourage acts of vandalism associated with the 91st annual Coffee Pot football game rivalry, the Tullahoma Police department will increase the patrol around their high school over the next couple of nights.
On Friday night officers of the Tullahoma Police, Coffee County Sheriff’s Department and the Manchester Police Department will come together to provide a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for the football game. Together law enforcement wants to encourage a fun, but safe football game.

Woman Overdoses in a car while her Husband Shops

pill-bottlesOur news partner WGNS Radio is reporting that a 24 year old Manchester woman overdosed on drugs while her husband was inside the South Rutherford Blvd. Walmart store in Murfreesboro.
When police arrived on the scene they noted that the victim was unresponsive, had a rapid pulse and clammy skin. The husband of the woman told police that she stayed in the car while he shopped, which is where police made contact with the female.
The victim’s husband told officers that his wife had taken opiates, marijuana and antidepressants together prior to finding her unconscious on Monday morning. The female was transported to St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro. She has since recovered, but the case has been labeled as an overdose.

Yoder named Director of the Motlow College Foundation.

Lane Yoder of Tullahoma was recently selected as the director of the Motlow College Foundation. The Foundation is the non-profit arm of Motlow State Community College and works to provide scholarships and support programs for Motlow State students.

Dr. Anthony Kinkel, president of Motlow State Community College, recently announced that Lane Yoder of Tullahoma has been selected as the director of the Motlow College Foundation.
Yoder brings extensive experience to the foundation from both the private and public sector. She is a native of Mississippi and a 1990 graduate of The University of the South in Sewanee, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics.
Her work experience includes over 16 years in the international and national insurance marketplace, working for Lloyd’s of London in London, England, and the brokerage firm of Hilb, Rogal and Hobbs (HRH), in the cities of Richmond, Va., Pittsburgh, Pa., and New York City. She served as the commercial lines manager for HRH in New York City for six years before returning to Mississippi in 2007 to serve as city president for Region’s Bank for four years.
Yoder currently serves as the president of Partners for Healing, a faith-based, free medical clinic serving the working uninsured in Coffee, Franklin and Moore Counties.
The Motlow College Foundation is a 501c(3) non-profit organization that serves to offer scholarships, support programs and maintain first-rate facilities that allows students of Motlow State the opportunity to pursue careers in their program of choice.

Dramatic Hole-in-One Lifts Lady Raider Golfers to Tournament Title

A “walk-off hole in one” on the last hole of the tournament lifted the Lady Raider golf team to the team championship of the Baylor Preview on Tuesday. Ashley Gilliam hit an 8 iron into the wind and played the roll of the 9th green on the last hole of the tournament to score her 2nd ever ace and give the Lady Raiders a 2 day total of 293 and a 1 stroke win over Rossview.
Gilliam finished the round with a 71 and a 2 day total of 145 to finish 2nd overall. Savannah Quick placed 3rd individually with a 148. The Lady Raiders record improves to 23 and 3 with the tournament win. Sweetens Cove golf course designer Rob Collins was a guest on Sirus XM’s PGA Tour Radio on Tuesday afternoon and described Gilliam’s feat. The CHS boys golf team will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Shelbyville for an 19 hole district match. Tee time is set for 1:00 PM at Riverbend Country Club.

CHS Soccer Tames Lady Bulldogs for Season Opening Win

Three 1st half goals and an exceptional performance in goal by senior keeper Holli Smithson led the CHS Lady Raider soccer team to a 3 to 1 win over Smyrna on Tuesday night. In a game heard here on Thunder Radio, Coffee County survived a shaky start as the visiting Lady Bulldogs outshot Coffee County 5 to 1 in the first 15 minutes. The Lady Raiders settled down and began to execute their passing attack to capture the season opening win.
Freshman Jenna Garretson got the scoring started when Mckenzie Anderson shuffled a nice feed to her in the top of the 18 yard box in the 16th minute. Caitlyn Moore added a goal in the 22nd minute off a cross from Ali Amado before Smyrna got their lone goal in the 33 minute. The Lady Raiders responded 1 minute later as Garretson found Ashley Woods in front of the net for the final tally.
Coffee County outshot Smyrna 18 to 12 in the match and Smithson finished the night with 11 saves. A gruesome ankle injury to Smyrna’s Megan Blumhoefer saw the game stopped in the 73rd minute as an ambulance was called due to a compound fracture o her right ankle. After the lengthy delay, both teams gathered at midfield to pray and the match was ended early by consent. The Lady Raiders are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Murfreesboro to take on Riverdale. That match kicks off at 5:30 PM.

The Lady Raider CHS volleyball team cleaned up their service game problems on Tuesday as they opened their district slate with a straight set win over Shelbyville on Tuesday. The Lady Raiders struck 23 aces and had only 12 service errors as they beat the Eaglettes by set scores of 25 – 12, 25 – 16 and 25 – 15.
Aerial Williams was once again strong at the net and the service line as she recorded 5 kills and 7 service aces. Kaylee Skipper led Coffee County in kills with 8 while Bailey Morgan and Rachel Henley each had 5 aces. Henley led the team is assists with 12 while Tyana Fenton led Coffee County in digs with 3.
With the win, the Lady Raiders record improves to 3 and 0 on the season and they are now 1 and 0 in district play. The Lady Raiders will host their home opener on Thursday when they welcome Tullahoma to the Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gym. First serve is set for 6 PM.
