Sounds Walk Off with Win in Home Finale
Franklin Barreto’s RBI triple scored Josh Rodriguez in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Nashville Sounds a 6-5 walk-off win over the Iowa Cubs in front of 8,002 fans Thursday night at First Tennessee Park.
With the game tied 5-5 going to the bottom of the ninth, Rodriguez lined a base hit up the middle to start the rally against Iowa reliever Gerardo Concepcion. After a failed bunt attempt, the 20-year-old Barreto lined a 0-2 pitch to the gap in right-center. Rodriguez raced around from first to score the winning run.
The Sounds finished the regular season with a home record of 36-36 and improved their overall mark to 83-57. The 83 wins are tied for fifth-most in Sounds history.
The 8,002 fans brought the 2016 regular season attendance to 504,060 – the second consecutive season the Sounds have had 500,000+ through the gates of First Tennessee Park. It’s the first time the franchise has hit those numbers in consecutive seasons since 1982 and 1983.
Both starters – Jharel Cotton for Nashville and Stephen Fife for Iowa – pitched well in the early part of the game. Cotton tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings for the Sounds and Fife threw four shutout frames for the Cubs.
The Sounds got on the board first when they plated four runs in the sixth. Colin Walsh’s two-run double gave Nashville a 2-0 lead and Bryan Anderson’s two-run triple extended the advantage to 4-0.
Iowa bounced back as the Sounds’ bullpen faltered. The Cubs got two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to even the game at 4-4. Bobby Wahl and Ryan Brasier allowed the four runs and combined to issue six walks in two innings.
Nashville took a 5-4 lead in the eighth when Iowa’s Lane Adams dropped a fly ball with two outs allowing Walsh to race around from first.
Iowa got the run back in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Logan Watkins.
It set up the 11th walk-off win of the season for Nashville and the first game-winner for Barreto who was playing in his second game since being promoted from Double-A Midland.
Barreto went 3-for-5 and Walsh went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored.
The Sounds travel to New Orleans for the final four-game series of the regular season scheduled to begin Friday night at Zephyrs Park. Left-hander Dillon Overton (13-5, 3.29) starts for the Sounds. New Orleans has not announced a starter. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Tickets for the 2016 Pacific Coast League playoff dates at First Tennessee Park are now available for purchase at the Nashville Sounds box office and online at www.nashvillesounds.com. The 2016 season is the Sounds’ 19th year in the Pacific Coast League and their second as the Oakland Athletics’ top affiliate.

Coffee County EMS to purchase New Cots
A lot of us suffer from back issues, but what if you had to lift up to 400lbs several times in a day? Coffee County Emergency Medical Service (EMS) employees do just that. Soon they will get some relief with purchase of powered ambulance cots. The five cots will be bought from Stryker EMS and will cost about $80,000. The powered cots will raise or lower patients with a touch of a button, thus reducing risk of injury. Now ambulance personnel have to raise and lower patients manually.
In August Coffee County EMS workers were called out around 800 times.
FedEx to build distribution center in Murfreesboro
FedEx has announced plans to build a $190 million distribution center in Murfreesboro.
The Daily News Journal reports that the Memphis-based shipping company will add the equivalent of 200 full-time positions to work at the 1-million-square-foot facility.
About 40 of the new positions will pay an average of $53,500 per year, while the remaining jobs will pay an average of $24,000 annually.
Brian Hercules, the vice president for economic development at the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce, says that there are hundreds of additional contract jobs like long-haul drivers that will also gain work through the facility.
Construction is set to begin by the end of the year and scheduled to be complete by early 2018.
More Tennessee Kids’ Pearly Whites are Shining

More Tennessee children have access to dental care through TennCare and CHIP, according to the federal government. (xenia/Morguefile)
The care provided for Medicaid-eligible children has increased by 3 percent since the new company managing the care, DentaQuest, won the contract.
According to federal figures, more than 925,000 children are now covered through TennCare or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
TennCare spokeswoman Sarah Tanksley says the success is largely coming from community outreach efforts.
“They have done some community events, just really working with our members and establishing that relationship,” she explains, “creating dental homes where our members are assigned to a primary dental provider and encouraging them, that they establish that relationship.”
When DentaQuest took over as the dental benefits manager for the state, some dentists warned its approach could reduce access for children.
But in addition to increasing the number of children enrolled, DentaQuest has saved the state $53 million so far.
Oral health is linked to other health issues, including diabetes and heart disease.
Tanksley says research also indicates that children who receive dental care early in life will seek it out later as adults.
“If we work with our members and establish those routines early in life, we feel and we hope that those practices will continue throughout childhood and into adulthood,” she explains. “And that those practices will transition not only from your dental health, but also to your overall health.”
As outlined in its contract with the state, DentaQuest stands to lose or gain $8 million dollars, based on its performance.
Tennesseans urged to use #GoVoteTN on Social Media
During the month of September, which is National Voter Registration Month, people should have someone take a picture of them holding an “I’m registered to vote. Are you?” sign, then post it using the hashtag #GoVoteTN.
A flurry of posts is expected on Tuesday, September 27 to celebrate National Voter Registration Day. #GoVoteTN is consistently one of the most successful state-led voter registration social media campaigns in the country.
“Tennesseans will be heading to the polls to vote for the next president of the United States before we know it. It’s crucial that people understand the need to get registered now so there won’t be any surprises in November,” Secretary Hargett said.
Voters must be registered at least 30 days before an election to cast a ballot. Tuesday, October 11 is the registration deadline to vote in the November 8 general election.
Anyone can print their own “I’m registered to vote. Are you?” sign at GoVoteTN.com, which can be customized to the colors of many of the state’s colleges, universities or professional sports teams. People can also check their registration status, access a voter registration form or download the free GoVoteTN app to access voter specific information, including polling locations, sample ballots and election results.
