Facing old rival Tullahoma on Tuesday night, the Coffee County Middle School soccer team saw the revenge-minded Lady Cats get three 2nd half goals to beat the short-handed Lady Raiders 4 to 3. Coffee County got a pair of goals from Maddy Jones but it was not enough to overcome the loss of a pair of talented defenders who were not available on Tuesday for Coffee County.
Tullahoma outshot Coffee County 10 to 6 on the night as Coffee County could not get their offense untracked. The Lady Cats got on the board first as Kaylee Smith drilled a free kick in from 40 yards out in the 9th minute. After a early shot from Coffee County’s Katie Cotton, the Lady Raiders were held without a shot on frame until the 28th minute when Reagan Ellison pushed forward for an unassisted goal to draw the score even going into the halftime break
In the 2nd half, Tullahoma’s Paisley Simmons scored goals in the 39th and 41st minutes to give the Cats a 2 goal lead heading into the last 19 minutes. Jones scored goals in the 48th and 59th minutes, but a Tullahoma goal by Mary-Katherine Stroop in the 53rd minute proved to be the match winner.
The loss drops the Lady Raiders record to 3-1-1 on the year. This match was scheduled as a non-conference match, so Coffee County remains 2-0-1 in the Central Tennessee Conference. The Lady Raiders are back at home on Thursday when they play host to South Franklin. That match will kick off at 4 PM.

Three-run 8th inning Lifts Nationals Over Braves 9-7

Braves2Pinch-runner Michael A. Taylor scored the go-ahead run on catcher Tyler Flowers’ throwing error as part of a three-run eighth inning and the Washington Nationals defeated the Atlanta Braves 9-7 on Tuesday night.
Taylor pinch-ran after Braves reliever Jose Ramirez (2-2) walked Ryan Zimmerman. Taylor stole second and, after Danny Espinosa’s walk, scored when an off-balance Flowers threw pinch-hitter Ben Revere’s bunt attempt well to the left of third baseman Adonis Garcia.

Trea Turner then hit a two-run single for Washington, which beat Atlanta for the 13th time in 15 meetings this season.

Koda Glover (2-0) retired the only two batters he faced to earn the victory, while Mark Melancon earned his 39th save in 42 opportunities.

Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper secured his first career 20 homer-20 steal season with a stolen base in the seventh.

Dansby Swanson, the 2015 overall No. 1 draft pick, hit an inside-the-park home run in the second inning. The shortstop lined a pitch from Gio Gonzalez over Turner and high off the fence in center field, 399 feet away. The ball caromed toward the infield, and Swanson slid home headfirst, easily beating the throw from Harper. It was his first career home run.

Swanson, who made his big league debut Aug. 17, entered the game hitting.236 with four RBIs in 55 at-bats. Atlanta’s previous inside-the-park home run was by Wes Helms on Oct. 7, 2001.

Swanson’s homer gave Atlanta a 3-1 lead, and the Braves added another run in the third on Freddie Freeman’s RBI single. But Washington blasted starter Williams Perez in the third inning, collecting three singles before Anthony Rendon launched an 0-2 pitch to left for his first career grand slam. Zimmerman chased Perez two batters later with a solo homer.

Perez allowed six runs in 2 1/3 innings. Gonzalez didn’t fare much better, allowing six runs in three innings.

RHP Mike Foltynewicz (8-5, 4.31) starts the series finale for Atlanta on Wednesday. Foltynewicz earned a victory in his only previous start this year against Washington, allowing four runs in 5 2/3 innings on Aug. 12.  First pitch is set for 6:05 CT.  Thunder Radio will bring you the broadcast immediately following the Ryan Sulkowski Show as a member of the Braves Radio Network.

Tourism Growing in Manchester and Tullahoma

Manchester GuitarRecently we reported that Tennessee tourism’s direct domestic and international travel expenditures reached an all-time high of $18.4 billion in 2015, up 3.7 percent over the previous year, as reported by the U.S. Travel Association.
For the 10th consecutive year, tourism topped $1 billion in state and local sales tax revenue, reaching $1.6 billion, up 7 percent over 2014. Tourism-generated jobs for Tennesseans reached 157,400, an increase of 2.9 percent.
WMSR News has now learned that Coffee County has demonstrated some of the strongest growth in the state in each of the five major categories measured in the economic impact study. As a County, we ranked 7th in Expenditure Growth, 7th in Payroll Growth, tied for 7th in Employment Growth, 6th in State Tax Receipts Growth, and 7th in Local Tax Receipts Growth.
In late 2014, the Manchester Tourism and Community Development Commission started developing a strategy that would later become known as the “Strengthen, Develop, and Grow” strategy. This strategy focuses on each of the five metrics (expenditures, payroll, employment, state tax receipts, local tax receipts) the State of Tennessee uses to determine the impact the Tourism Industry has on our community. In 2015, the Manchester Tourism and Community Development commission fully launched their strategic plan to stakeholders, which focused on growing our tax base through various tourism avenues including Occupancy Tax (Hotel/Motel) and sales tax.
Ryan French, City of Manchester Vice Mayor and Tourism Commission Chairman said, “We are thrilled with the early results of the Strengthen, Develop, and Grow strategy; However, we are just getting started. The beginning of our strategy was designed to focus on growing the impact of tourism has on occupancy and sales tax collections. Manchester is currently experiencing some of the strongest sales tax growth in its history. We as a commission are focused on continuing to grow those numbers.”

Marine Bus Fire Update

We have an update on the bus fire on Interstate 24 near Monteagle.
About 40 U.S. Marines from Marine Corps Base Camp in Jacksonville, North Carolina were aboard the bus. They were on their way to Nashville to celebrate Marine Week.
Investigators believe the bus overheated and caught fire near mile marker 136, though the cause of the fire has not been confirmed.
Troopers say the captain, who was driving the bus, noticed a fire sparking from the engine, and immediately pulled over in the emergency lane, so everyone could escape what eventually grew into massive flames.
The Monteagle Fire Department was able to put the fire out in about 30 minutes.
No one was hurt, and no other cars were damaged.
The Marines were taken to a city park in Monteagle shortly after the fire, where the fire department hosted a fundraiser, but also provided lunch to the marines while they waited for new bus.
Though their journey was delayed, the Marines did make it to Nashville.

Gas Prices Falling Again

gas prices2Americans paid the lowest gas prices this Labor Day holiday weekend since 2004. The national average of $2.22 is 24 cents less than Labor Day 2015, and $1.24 less than the holiday two years ago.
“Despite the increased gasoline demand from holiday travelers, gas prices actually declined a couple of cents throughout the holiday weekend thanks to lower oil prices,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. He added, “Gas prices in the Fall should get even cheaper, because demand declines as Americans return to school and work.”
Gas prices in Tennessee are averaging $2.02 per gallon. In Coffee County, the low price in Manchester is $1.88 and in Tullahoma the low price per gallon is $1.95.
