Westwood Closed Out Their Regular Season on Thursday at Liberty

Allie Roberts of Westwood basketball
The Westwood basketball teams closed out the regular season at Liberty on Thursday night as they make their final preparations for the postseason tournament. The Lady Rockets dropped a 32 to 27 decision. The Rockets fell 38 to 30.
A hot start for Westwood was not enough to hold off the Lady Patriots on Thursday night in the girls’ game. The Lady Rockets built a 10 to 4 1st quarter lead thanks to three 3 pointers from Allie Roberts. Liberty was able to rally back to take a one point lead into the half and closed out the tight game by outscoring Westwood 16 to 12 in the 2nd half. Roberts finished with 14 points leading Westwood, while Clarissa Barrera added 6 points.

Cruz Pitsinos of Westwood basketball
A strong 2nd half by the Rockets could not overcome Westwood’s cold shooting start. Trailing 21 to 9 at the half, the Rockets closed out the game scoring 12 points in a 4th quarter rally that came up short. Trent Thompson led Westwood in scoring with 9 points. Cruz Pitsinos added 7 points with all of them coming on the 4th quarter rally.
Both Westwood teams will begin tournament play on Saturday. The Lady Rockets will travel to Liberty at 11 AM for their first round game with the Lady Patriots. The Rockets will be hosting their first round game. The boys will take on Huntland on Saturday at the Joel Vinson Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 PM.

The Coffee County wrestling team was in action on Thursday night in Winchester taking on Franklin County and Siegel in a three-way duals match. The small Coffee County squad was unable to gain a team win but did have some strong individual performances.
Against Siegel, the Raider grapplers fell 57 to 9 in the team score. Joel Lawrence(at 170) won a 12 to 7 decision in his match. Rein Bozich(145) got a pinfall win in the 2nd round of his match.
Against Franklin County, the Raiders were outscored 42 to 27. Franklin County only scored 12 team points on the mat as they gained 30 of their points due to forfeit wins when the Raiders did not have wrestlers for 5 of the weight classes. Coffee County got pinfall wins from Joseph White(138), Noah O’Shields(126), Joel Lawrence(182) and Owen Teague(152). Rein Bozich won an exciting 15 to 12 decision fighting at 145.
The wrestling team will travel to Riverdale on Tuesday night for a three-way duals match with the Warriors and Shelbyville. First match gets underway at 6 PM.
Preds Tough Start Leads to Loss in Dallas
Five goals for the Stars in the opening 40 minutes put the Nashville Predators in a hole they were unable to climb out of as Dallas won the third meeting between the clubs, 5-2.
Pekka Rinne kept the home team off the scoreboard for the first 9:55 of the contest, but two goals in 23 seconds gave the Stars the boost they needed on Thursday. After topping Dallas 5-2 in Nashville on Nov. 23, Nashville’s struggles on the road re-emerged in a frustrating way tonight.
“We knew they were going to come [at us]… at times, we were not bad, and then we shot ourselves in the foot – miscommunicating and not bearing down in our own end and they made us pay,” defenseman Mattias Ekholm said. “That’s up to us to fix, and we’ve just got to get better on the road. It seems like we don’t make those mistakes at home, but somehow they happen on the road and that’s something we have to correct.”
“It’s not the way we wanted to start,” forward Frederick Gaudreau said. “Whatever happened happened. We’ve just got to get ready for the next game. That’s what we can control.”
Viktor Arvidsson used a high wrister to pull the Preds within a goal in the first period at 16:03. The shorthanded marker from Austin Watson to Arvidsson set a new career high in goals with nine for the 23-year-old winger.
The 2-1 deficit widened quickly in the second, however, with the Stars scoring twice more in the first six minutes of the middle frame. Marek Mazanec came on in relief for Rinne after the fourth Dallas goal, stopping 18 of 19 shots the rest of the way. Mazanec also recorded his first career point, an assist on Calle Jarnkrok’s goal late in the game.
The attention for Nashville now turns to Arizona, where the Preds will meet the Coyotes for the second time this season on Saturday. That game begins at 7 PM and Thunder Radio will bring you all the action on the Nashville Predators Radio Network.

Rest Areas Closed in Monteagle
The drought has led to wildfires and some water restrictions across the area, but the dry conditions are also affecting rest areas in Grundy County.
They are closed on the Nashville side of Interstate 24, which could be inconvenient for drivers. TDOT maintains the rest areas, which use water from the City of Monteagle. The facilities use more than 3,000 gallons of water a day.
City officials are concerned about their water supply, so they asked TDOT to close them for now. A similar situation happened nine years ago.
TDOT officials said they plan to reopen the rest areas from December 21 to January 2. After that, they’ll have to look at the conditions and figure out if the drought is still a factor. (WRCB-TV)

An Invisible Illness: Raising Awareness of IBD
It’s called the “invisible disease,” but the 30,000 people who have Crohn’s or colitis in Tennessee will tell you it is anything but. These are inflammatory bowel diseases that cause pain, weight loss, exhaustion and other symptoms that are not curable.
Michelle Chianese, the executive director of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America in Tennessee, explains that since stress often aggravates the illness, many people are diagnosed between ages 15 and 35, when they’re in school or starting families and careers.
“It happens a lot during a very productive and busy time in someone’s life, and sometimes it can be missed as food poisoning, or just some kind of virus,” she explained. “And then, it’s not until months and sometimes even years later when it’s officially diagnosed.”
This week is Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Week. The causes of Crohn’s disease or colitis are not well understood, but diet and stress are known to aggravate symptoms. Those symptoms include persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, abdominal cramps, fever, weight loss and night sweats.
Jordan Sorrells has lived with Crohn’s disease for 20 years and said it’s always a challenge to educate people about it, simply because some of its effects are unpleasant and hard to discuss.
“It’s definitely one of those diseases that people don’t want to talk about,” he said. “It’s not polite dinner conversation. Things that I’ve had to deal with over the years, the main things that I deal with, are fatigue, weight loss, and they just depend on my stress level and everything that’s going on.”
And since it isn’t obvious that someone has an inflammatory bowel disease or IBD, Chianese said awareness and support from friends and loved ones is key.
“It’s important for people to talk about these diseases and let everyone know how severe these diseases can be, and how they can impact patients’ lives,” she said. “And just have it be part of the conversation.”
According to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, as many as 70,000 new cases of IBD are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, with as many as 80,000 children living with the condition.
