Sophomore Spencer Mossburg went 5-6 at the plate and Casey Wehrhahn hit a double and a home run and drove in three as the Motlow Bucks beat Columbia St. 13-3 Saturday to win the final game of a three-game Tennessee Community College Athletic Association (TCCAA) series played at Dave Hall Field in Columbia last weekend. The Chargers swept Friday’s doubleheader 5-4, 8-6.
The Bucks (10-17, 2-4) dropped a 12-5 decision to visiting Wallace St. on Tuesday. Motlow will host conference rival Dyersburg St. this weekend at the Driver Baseball Complex, with Friday’s single game scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and Saturday’s doubleheader beginning at noon.
Friday’s opening game in Columbia saw Tullahoma freshman R.J. Moore take a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Moore left with two outs in the sixth, having allowed two hits and one earned run with four walks and four strikeouts. J.R. Gilmer relieved Moore and took the loss, although he didn’t allow an earned run.
Mossburg had another hot day from his leadoff spot in the batting order, going 3-3 with a triple and a run scored. Wehrhahn was 2-4 with a double and drove in two runs.
Motlow was in positon to win the second game of Friday’s doubleheader as well, but once again the defense was shaky in the final innings. Gilmer took the loss again, pitching the final 1.1 innings and allowing only one hit along with three walks. Mossburg started on the hill, going three innings and allowing five hits and two runs with four strikeouts. Bryce Bub pitched 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and one run.
J.D. Robertson led Motlow’s offensive attack with a pair of hits, while Dylan Stark, Hunter Nance and Peyton Meeker each hit doubles. Josh Bankston and Nance drove in runs for the Bucks.
Saturday’s single nine-inning game showed how good the Bucks can be when they don’t commit any errors in the field. Nate Newman got the win on the mound, scattering six hits in 5.1 innings with two runs allowed and six strikeouts. Cameron Harper pitched 1.2 innings and gave up three hits and a run, and Connor Boyd closed the door in the final two innings without allowing a hit.
Along with Mossburg and Wehrhahn, Nance had a pair of hits, including a double, and drove in three runs, Brody Thomasson was 3-6 and scored twice, Robertson went 2-5 and scored two and drove in two, Weston Burris was 2-4 with two runs scored, and Cameron Isley went 2-4 and drove in a run.
