The Coffee County Middle School basketball teams advanced to the championship games of the Woodbury Border War Tournament with a pair of semifinal wins on Thursday night. The Lady Raiders raced out to a 7 point halftime lead on to be held scoreless in the 3rd quarter by Woodland and send Coffee County to the 4th quarter trailing by 2. Julia Duncan scored 6 of her team high 15 points to help lead the comeback. Alisha Jennings finished with 7 points while Ellie Graham and Abby Morgan each notched 4 points. Morgan’s two baskets, coupled with her three 2ndhalf steals, help lift the Lady Raiders to Saturday night’s championship game. The Lady Raiders will play DeKalb County for the tournament championship at 7:00 on Saturday night at the Woodbury Grammar School.
Facing a 4th quarter deficit against Central Magnet, the Red Raiders poured in 15 points in the final 6 minutes to get a second straight come from behind victory 42 to 38. Andrew Mahaffey poured in 14 pints for Coffee Middle while Weston Hargrove added 9 points. Nathaniel Horne added 8 points to improve the Raiders record to 2 and 0 on the year. The Raiders will play Westside for the tournament championship at 8:15 on Saturday night at the Woodbury Grammar School.
The 6th grade Raiders and Lady Raiders traveled to Sparta on Thursday night in a rematch from Monday night. In girl’s action, the Lady Raiders spanked the home standing Warriorettes 42 to 32. Keri Munn had a dominant performance as she poured in 24 points to lead the offensive attack. Bella Vinson added 12 points which included 2 three point plays in the 1st quarter. The Red Raiders saw their 4 game winning streak come to an end at the hand of White County. Trevor Horne and Jaxon Vaughn each had 8 points in the loss. The 6th grade cagers return home on Tuesday night with a 6 PM doubleheader as Harris Middle School will visit the CCMS gym.
The Westwood Rockets visited new conference member Fayetteville on Thursday night and came home with 2 wins. The Lady Rockets got off to a strong start as they held the Lady Tigers scoreless in the 1st quarter in route to a 31 to 18 win. Danielle Baker led the Lady Rockets in scoring with 11 points while Ashley Starks poured in 10 points. The win improved the Lady Rockets record to 3 and 2 on the year. The Rockets completed the sweep with a 28 to 25 come from behind victory over the Tigers. Chase Simpkins led the Rockets with 12 points, including 4 in the 4thquarter. Marcus Pendleton finished with 11 points as he hit 4 big free throws in the final frame to aid in the comeback win. Westwood will be on the road on Monday night as they travel to Chapel Hill to take on Forrest. The girls game will tip off at 6:00 PM.
