First year Coffee Middle Wrestling team taking sign-ups through Aug. 29

This fall marks the first year that wrestling will be offered to students at Coffee County Middle School. Sign ups have begun and will go through August 29th. Coaches encourage all students at CMS who are interested in participating to sign up as soon as possible. Sign up packets are available in Mrs. Weitzel’s classroom (class #258). To be signed up, packets must be filled out and returned to Mrs. Weitzel by the end of the school day on Aug. 29. Wrestling is available for both boys and girls. FOOTBALL: Westwood hits on big plays in final preseason tune up

Westwood hit on a few big plays Friday evening in their final preseason tune up of the fall. The middle school Rockets played a 40-minute running clock with Forrest and ended up losing 32-22, for whatever the score is worth. But big plays were a highlight for WMS. Kaysen Lowery connected on a 27-yard pass to Matthew White that set up a 1-yard touchdown run from John Kohls. Later, Lowery broke loose on a 48-yard scamper to put the Rockets in the end zone again. White team comes out on top of annual Westwood intra squad

The White Team won bragging rights Thursday night at the annual Westwood Middle School Blue-White Intra Squad game. Team White picked up a 48-24 win. Kaysen Lowery played quarterback for both teams and, expectedly so, racked up some impressive numbers. Lowery threw for three touchdowns and ran for 3 scores. He connected twice with Matthew White and once with Keller Hatfield. White also had a 70 yard pick six that went the other way for a score in the game. CMS football drops opener; Westwood volleyball wins Thursday

Thursday was the opener for a couple of area middle school fall sports teams. The Westwood Rocket volleyball team got off to a good start, improving to 1-0 and getting coach Hayley Banks her first career win as a middle school head coach by dropping Community in straight sets: 25-22 and 25-23. Meanwhile, the JV Lady Rockets fell 11-25 and 12-25. It was not as good of a night for the CMS Raider football team. The Raiders were down 34-0 at the half and were unable to recover. A couple of middle school fall sports will get out of the blocks on Thursday. The Coffee Middle Football team will open the season with a non-conference bout against West Wilson Thursday, Aug. 4. Kick off is set for 6:30 p.m. at Carden-Jarrell field in Manchester (865 McMinnville Highway, behind Raider Academy). Meanwhile, Westwood Rockets volleyball will open the season with their first regular season match under new head coach Hayley Banks. Braves acquire Adrianza from Nationals, DFA Cano

Ehire Adrianza is returning to Atlanta with the hope of once again helping the Braves win a World Series title.  The Braves acquired Adrianza from the Nationals in exchange for Trey Harris on Monday afternoon. Atlanta created a roster spot by designating Robinson Canó for assignment. Adrianza has hit just .179 with a .458 OPS in 94 plate appearances for the Nationals this year. Monday, Aug. 1 was set to be the opening day of fall sports for Coffee County Central, as the Raider golf teams traveled to Lakewood Country Club for the Tullahoma Invitational. Coffee County got off the tee at about 9 a.m., but only sloshed through about five holes before mother nature decided to send everyone home.
