Hayden Pewitt drove in the winning run with a two-out, ninth-inning single and the Motlow Bucks advanced in the TCCAA/Region VII Tournament with a 7-6 win over Cleveland State at the Driver Baseball Complex on Saturday. The Bucks were down 6-3 going into the bottom of 9th and managed to score 4 times for the win. The win came on the heels of Motlow’s 8-4 win over the Cougars on Friday and completed a sweep of their tournament-opening series. Motlow now advances to the final five-team tournament in Gallatin this weekend. The Bucks are seeded fourth and will play fifth-seed Volunteer State at 10 a.m. Friday. The Bucks swept a three-game series over Volunteer State in late February at the Driver Complex. If Motlow can get past the Pioneers they will be matched with top-seed Columbia State at 4 p.m. on Friday. If Volunteer wins Friday’s first game then the Bucks will fall into the elimination bracket and will play again at 7 p.m. Friday. Columbia is the top seed in the tournament, with Walters State second and Jackson State third.
The Motlow Lady Bucks saw their 2014 softball season come to a disappointing end when they dropped a 9-1, 12-11 doubleheader to Columbia State last weekend in the opening round of the TCCAA/Region VII Tournament in Columbia.
The Lady Bucks will lose 10 sophomores from this year’s squad and will return five players in 2015 that made significant contributions as freshmen.
