Local Sports On Thursday April 24

The varsity and junior varsity tennis teams competed in the District 8 tennis tournaments on Thursday at Sewanee. In singles play, Kristen Shelton and Trevor Ivy-Bodman each advanced to the 2nd round before being eliminated. Audra Schaffer and Will McCormick were each eliminated in the first round. In doubles play, the 2 Coffee County doubles teams were matched up in the first round as the team of Matt & Kyle Johnson defeated Andrew Henley and Andy Stout. Johnson & Johnson were eliminated in the second round. In girls play, both doubles teams picked up 1st round victories as the team of Carlee Reed & Abby Ferrrell won handily before being eliminated in the 2nd round on the tie breaker. The team of Maddie Taylor and Alex Crossland won their 1st set dropping only 1 game before being eliminated by the #1 seeded doubles team. In JV action, singles players Savannah Hodge and Kayle Wright both were 3 and 0 on the day and advanced to the semifinals. A win Friday would put each lady into the JV finals.

In Middle school golf action on Thursday, Westwood and Coffee Middle traveled to McMinnville to take on Warren County. In girls play, Westwood edged out Coffee Middle for 2nd place 117 to 126. Coffee Middle’s Jacque Crossland shot a 45 which tied for low round honors but Jordan Green’s 55 and Lexi Holder’s 62 were enough to propel the Lady Rockets to victory. In boys play, Warren County topped Coffee County 170 to 190 with Westwood taking 3rd place. Samuel Prater shot a 44 for Coffee Middle and Austin Farris and Josh Perry each carded a 47. Thomas Lemons and Dalton Maccagnone each carded a 55 for the Rockets. The Westwood and Coffee Middle golf teams will take off next week before hosting Tullahoma on May 5th at 4:00 PM at Willowbrook.

The Coffee Middle baseball season came to an end on Thursday night in Winchester in the 2nd round of the CTC Tournament falling to Harris by a final score of 10 to 8. Harris built a 7 run lead going into the bottom of the 3rd before the Red Raiders roared back. Coffee Middle scored in each of the next 4 innings, but could not overcome the Tigers advantage. Nathanial Tate was 4 for 4 on the night with a double, a triple and 2 RBI. With the loss, the Raiders finished the season with a final record of 17 and 6.

The Lady Raiders cleaned up the defensive miscues from Wednesday night as they blasted White County 14 to 1 in the elimination bracket of the CTC Tournament. Erin Ferrell got the win for Coffee Middle as she went the distance allowing 3 hits and striking out 3. Shelby Scrivnor was 3 for 3 at the plate and Karlyssa Meadows was 2 for 2 with a walk and 4RBI. Coffee Middle will take on Harris Middle at 7 on Friday night as the tournament continues in Tullahoma.

Coffee County High School softball will play Friday at 4pm and 7pm, Saturday at 10am and 1:30pm with possible games after that. They are hosting the Coffee County Classic.

Coffee Middle’s track teams opened the season at Tullahoma on Thursday in grand fashion by sweeping East. The Girls won by a final of 71 to 20 and the boys won 73 to 18.

The CCMS track team travels to Warren County on Tuesday May 6 for a 4PM meet.

The CHS soccer team had many opportunities to score but needed a late penalty kick to gain a 1 to 0 win over Franklin County on Thursday night at Carden-Jarrell Field. Cole Hawkins had a penalty kick stopped in the 37th minute and 2 follow-up shots were turned away to send the match to the half scoreless. In the second half, Coffee County missed 4 great scoring opportunities before Abelene Barrera drilled a second Raider penalty kick past the keeper in the 71st minute to provide the only score. Lafredo Ramirez made a spectacular stop in the 68th minute to preserve the shutout. Coffee County travels to Lawrence County on Saturday for a 4:00 PM make-up match. They will begin District 8 tournament play in Shelbyville on May 3rd, time and opponent to be determined later.
