After two of the biggest regular-season goals in recent memory, Martin Methodist Women’s Soccer forward Katie Reid has been named the NAIA National Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Reid, a 5-foot-7 junior from Manchester, Tennessee, won the award thanks to a two-goal, two-assist performance in a 1-0-1 week last week for Martin Methodist.
Reid notched the game-winning goal in the RedHawks (9-1-3) victory over No. 3 William Carey (Miss.) University last Saturday. The junior also bagged the game-tying goal in an eventual 2-2 draw against No. 7 University of Mobile (Ala.) last Thursday.
Reid also added an assist in each contest as the RedHawks leapt from No. 8 to No. 3 in the latest NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.
The goals were the fourth and fifth of the season for Reid, who is no stranger to clutch goals. The junior scored at the NAIA Women’s Soccer national tournament in both of the last two seasons and has now notched four match-winning goals in her career.
With the selection, Reid becomes just the ninth RedHawk – regardless of sport – to achieve Player of the Week status at the national level. Four other RedHawk Women’s Soccer performers have achieved the distinction prior to Reid.
Former RedHawk forward Mor Efraim was the last Women’s Soccer standout to achieve the mark, winning the honor twice in the 2011 season.
“Katie was fantastic last week for us in our two biggest matches of the year,” RedHawks head coach Will Austin said. “She delivered the equalizer on Thursday and then dug deep for the match-winner on Saturday. Given the level of competition she faced, that is a remarkable achievement and it is a delight to see her honored for those performances.”
