MTSU lands Grant for Ginseng Growing

Middle Tennessee State University has landed a $148,000 federal grant for a ginseng experiment. According to a university news release, the U.S. Department of Agriculture grant will help MTSU support planting up to 100 acres (40 hectares) of ginseng in Tennessee, depending on participation by growers. MTSU says this could add $4 million in farm profit annually once the harvest is normalized. MTSU associate professor Iris Gao says ginseng usually takes seven years to grow outdoors, but the university’s lab research is shortening growth time by around two years. Update on Officer Involved Shooting in Tullahoma

At the request of 14th District Attorney General Craig Northcott, TBI Special Agents are investigating the circumstances of an officer-involved shooting Sunday afternoon in Tullahoma. Preliminary information indicates an officer from the Tullahoma Police Department encountered 44 year-old William Eugene Moon in the area of 800 East Moore Street while serving a warrant for aggravated assault. For reasons still under investigation, the situation escalated and resulted in the officer firing upon the subject, who was hit and injured. Dropout Rate are High at Tennessee Community Colleges– Enrollment and Retention Increase

A report by an education advocacy group has found that enrollment and retention have increased at Tennessee community colleges, but dropout rates remain alarmingly high, especially among poor and minority students. The Tennessean reports, Complete Tennessee released the report last week. The “Beneath the Surface”: State of Higher Education in Tennessee” report indicates a 25% decrease in adult enrollment since 2011, among other findings. The report also highlights practices from around the country that Tennessee colleges can look toward. Since 2010 the Delaney family in Hillsboro has transformed their home into a huge Christmas light show in an effort to benefit local charities. Officer Involved Shooting in Tullahoma–Update as of 7:13pm Sunday

There was an officer involved shooting in Tullahoma on Sunday afternoon. Coffee County District Attorney Craig Northcott says that Tullahoma Police were trying to serve a warrant on William Moon when police say a struggle took place and that is when Moon allegedly pulled out a gun. Moon was shot by an unnamed officer and was rushed to a hospital for surgery. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was called to scene and an investigation is underway. We have an update on three teenagers that reported as missing from our area. We can now report that all three have been found. 16 year-old Katrina Lynn Blackburn from Coffee County, 16 year-old Kaylee Lenoria Stephens from Cannon County and 15 year-old Nicholas Brazier of Manchester were reported as safe on Friday.
