Conservationists Release Endangered Sturgeon into Tennessee River
Scientists from the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute and the state Wildlife Resources Agency have released 89 lake sturgeon into the Tennessee River, as part of an ongoing effort to replenish the wild population. These fish, which are listed as endangered, once thrived in the United States, but nearly went extinct in the 1970s because of overfishing, dam building, and poor water quality. Meredith Hayes Harris is a biologist with the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute that participated in the sturgeon release this week. 51 Correctional Officers during Graduation Ceremony in Tullahoma
On Friday, (April 12, 2019) the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) welcomed new correctional officers into the workforce during a graduation ceremony at the Tennessee Correction Academy in Tullahoma, Tennessee. The ceremony celebrated the hard work of 51 Correctional Officers who will be serving the citizens of Tennessee by working in prisons across the state. During their weeks of training, the class learned skills that will assist them in being effective correctional officers. Classes on leadership, effective listening and interviewing techniques, teamwork and defense skills were taught during the six-week academy. Holy Week Services in Manchester
The Coffee County Ministerial Association will host their annual HOLY WEEK SERVICES, Monday, April 15 through Friday, April 19 at noon each day. The Monday through Thursday services will be held at Manchester First Presbyterian Church, 1001 Jackson Street in Manchester and the Friday service will be at St. Bede’s Episcopal Church, 93 St. Bede’s Drive. State Representative Rush Bricken (R-Tullahoma) has officially passed his first bill as a member of the Tennessee General Assembly and the House Republican Caucus. Medical Marijuana Fails in Tennessee Again
A push to legalize medical marijuana in Tennessee has been dropped from consideration this year. Sen. Steve Dickerson of Nashville told a committee Wednesday that he will delay his bill until 2020. The legislation would have allowed sprays, pills, ointments and other non-smoking forms of marijuana for people with certain debilitating conditions, ranging from cancer to multiple sclerosis. It also spelled out a comprehensive regulatory setup for growing, processing and dispensing, and an identification card system for patients. As a part of his audio/visual production classes, Scott Anderson, a teacher at Coffee County High School had his students create a 60-second public service announcement for the Operation Prevention video challenge. Operation Prevention is a program created by the Drug Enforcement Administration and Discovery Education to help lessen the epidemic of the abuse of prescription drugs. Their goal is to jump-start a life-altering conversation about the dangers of abusing opioids and the damage it can cause to a life.
