Delthenia Williams Jones, age 81 of Decherd, passed away September 13, 2012.
She was the fourth child and only daughter of Elmore and Eloise Williams. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Elmore Williams, Jr., Thomas (Dora) Williams, and Rev. Wallace A. Williams. She married Edward Jones on December 24th, 1960. To this union, one daughter, Venetia Fhey was born. There were no parents that were prouder than Delthenia and Edward; cheering for FCHS Rebellettes. They didn’t miss a game. She was born in Cowan, Tennessee and graduated from Thorogood Public School, Townsend High School and Tennessee State University in Nashville. She took additional courses at Middle Tennessee State University and Trevecca Nazarene College. She took her first job on August 26, 1954 at Booker T. Washington in Memphis and stayed there until 1960. She returned to Cowan to teach at Townsend High School, Franklin County High School and lastly, North Jr. High School for a total of 34 years as a teacher. She exemplified all of the finest qualities her job defined. Her teaching years were filled with a determination that every student could and would learn. They would come prepared and she intended for them to succeed, Many were fortunate to be in one of her classes.
She was a life- long member of the Mt. Sinai M.B. Church in Cowan, TN. She served there for 76 years. She held various positions, such as Sunday School Teacher, Director of Vacation Bible School, Director of the Annual Christmas Pageant, Missionary Society Teacher, President of the Senior Choir, Corresponding Secretary, and the Mothers Board. Civically, she was a member of the Decherd City Planning Commission, member of the Human Services Families First Department, and a member of the Benevolents. She was a child of the King. She loved her family and friends freely and whole heartedly. She gave you straight talk and you didn’t have to like it, but, it was the truth. She was fond of shopping and she enjoyed the shopping trips she gave her nieces and nephews upon high school graduation. As much as she loved shopping, she truly enjoyed giving. She was known to keep a variety of gifts on hand just for an unknown of forgotten occasion. There was no charity that she did not send a donation to. If it came in the mail, she sent them a check. Sometimes, much to Edward’s displeasure. But, she thought she could help someone. The only thing she did not like was house work. She found ways to get that done by enlisting the help of her nieces.
She leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted and loving niece and caregiver, Yvonne Glover, sisters-in-law, Glyndon K. Williams of Cowan, TN, Lucinda Taylor of Saginaw, MI, Billie L. Jones of Decherd, Louise Jones of Saginaw, MI, and Barbara (Gordon) Nichols of Saginaw, MI; brothers-in-law, Henderson (Sara) Jones, Walter (Charlene) Jones, and Sammie (Truthia) Jones, all of Saginaw, MI; best friends, Juanita and Jewel Syler of Winchester, TN and four generations of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and acquaintances.
