6/22/14 — Thomas Price Saine

flower 4Thomas Price Saine, 72, passed away on December 5, 2013.  He was born on
March 8, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York to Evelyn Meadows Saine and Clarence
Price Saine.  He is survived by sons, Peter and Jeremy Saine, sisters, Susan
Dignam and Martha Saine, and by brother, Robert Saine.  He began his career
at Yale, his undergraduate and graduate alma mater, where he taught as
assistant and associate professor of German from 1969-1975.  After two terms
as visiting professor at the University of Cincinnati, Saine moved to the
University of California, Irvine.  At UCI, he spent a long career as as
internationally known scholar of 18th Century German literature and culture,
serving also as chair of the German Department from 1976 to 1987.  He was
one of the founders of the now well-established Geothe Society of North
America and the founding editor of the Goethe Yearbook, an important venue
for Eighteenth Century Studies, which he edited from 1982-1999.  Author of
numerous books and articles and recipient of distinguished grants and many
accolades, he was a strong advocate for German Studies in the United States
and an accomplished practitioner of that discipline.  In his retirement, he
moved to Plano, TX, to be near his family members, where he spent his time
trying out recipes and taking care of his three Scottish terriers.  He will
be dearly missed, but we will always be grateful for the wisdom and kindness
he always had to share with us, and the boyish spark he never lost.

Services will be held at Manchester Funeral Home at 2:00 PM on Sunday, June
22, 2014.
