Help With Electric Bills

The South Central Human Resource Agency Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is designed to provide assistance to elderly handicapped and low-income persons with energy used to heat their homes through financial assistance to help offset a portion of the cost. The amount of aid each LIHEAP participant receives varies, depending upon a variety of factors, including income level.

In order to receive the assistance, applicants must meet a number of criteria, including having a family income that is 150 percent or less of the federal poverty guidelines. For a single-person household this translates to an annual income of no more than $16,755. The cutoff for a family of two is $22,695. For a family of three the maximum income is $28,635, a figure that increases to $34,575 for a four-person household; to $40,515 for a family of five; $46,455 for a family of six; $52,395 for a seven-member household; and to $58,335 for a family of eight.
