UPDATED List: Candidates Qualify for August Elections

The City of Manchester will be electing its mayor, three aldermen and two school board members, all too four-year terms in August. Incumbent Mayor Lonnie Norman and Coffee County Commissioner Steven Jones have filed petitions to run for mayor along with Attorney James Threet. Russell Bryan, Ryan French and Tim Pauley are the current aldermen whose terms end in August. French is the only one running for re-election. Gas Prices may go up More

The low price of oil has given way to declines in prices at the pump. The average price of gas fell for the tenth consecutive day Sunday. State averages are 2-3 cents lower than a week ago. AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said motorists filling their gas tanks got a brief reprieve from rising prices, thanks to a dip in oil prices early last week. Two Shelbyville Men Charged with Theft

Last Thursday, (April 7th, 2016) Investigators from the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office were able to charge Ernest Feinstein, 27, of Shelbyville and Charles Beauchamp-Freeman, 21, of Shelbyville with 5 counts of Burglary, 4 counts of theft under $500, and 1 count of theft over $500 each. Investigators were able to recover some of the stolen property, which includes a handgun. The charges stem from the suspects breaking into several vehicles in the Kingston Corner Road area. Fire Damages Manchester Home

On Saturday afternoon Manchester Fire-Rescue received a report of a kitchen fire at 140 Woodcrest Blvd. Fire crews from both stations responded to the scene. When they arrived there was heavy fire and smoke as the fire had vented itself thru the roof area over the kitchen. Crews attacked the fire aggressively and stopped the fire from spreading to other areas of the home. There is heavy damage in the kitchen and living room areas of the home. Tullahoma Man facing Child Abuse Charges

A Tullahoma man is being held under $50,000 bond after he allegedly held an 8-year-old girl’s head underwater in a bathtub. Christopher Terrance Daniels, 31, of 131 Silver St., has been charged with aggravated child abuse or neglect under Haley’s Law. Haley’s Law makes the abuse of a child under the age of 9 resulting in bodily injury a Class A felony. The law was named in honor the 2004 East Tennessee case of “Baby Haley,” who was badly abused by her father and stepmother. The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security announced the current McMinnville Driver Services Center will close and space for a new center will be renovated at McMinnville City Hall located at 101 East Street. Legislation which puts more teeth in Tennessee’s E-Verify law to ensure that new hires are in the state legally is now on its way to the governor after unanimous approval in the House of Representatives Thursday. The bill, sponsored by Senator Jim Tracy (R-Shelbyville) and Representative Pat Marsh (R-Shelbyville), targets bad actors who find it more advantageous to pay a one-time $500 fine for hiring illegal aliens than to follow Tennessee’s Lawful Employment Act passed in 2011.
