The University of the South in Sewanee has been awarded a grant by the John Templeton Foundation to study the Laws of Life Essay Contest. The award of more than $1.1 million will allow principal investigator Sherry Hamby, research associate professor in the Department of Psychology, to conduct a comprehensive mixed-methods evaluation of the essay contest. The Tullahoma Board of Education is beginning its search to find a replacement for Tullahoma City School’s outgoing director.  A special meeting is planned for October 2nd at Tullahoma High School to obtain input from residents about what skills and qualifications they deem the replacement candidates should have. Dr. Tammy Grissom, Tennessee School Boards Association executive director, will lead groups in discussion designed to determine their views about the issues and challenges facing the school system and the director’s position. Two residents of Tullahoma have reported to police that someone has been illegally using their debit/ATM cards. Shelton Daniel of Smoke Rise Circle reported to Tullahoma Police Officer Kevin Smith that his ATM card was used at Mapco Market on East Lincoln Street. The people using the card obtained $202.50 and then charged $100.09 for two cartons of cigarettes at the store. Officer Smith learned that an attempt was used later at two other locations, but the card was declined due to Daniel notifying the card company that it had been stolen. Vanderbilt LifeFlight is adding a new response vehicle to its fleet, one that will assist local emergency service agencies on days that the helicopter can’t fly due to unfavorable weather conditions. A “Critical Care Response” car will be placed at each of the five LifeFlight helicopter community bases for the critical care medical teams to meet local EMS teams and assist transport by ground ambulance on missions that can’t be completed by air due to weather conditions. The seventh annual Middle Tennessee Remote Control Club Association will be held at the Tullahoma Regional Airport. The event will be held September 15 & 16. This is the second year that the club has held their annual fly-in at the local airport. Last year members of the club requested permission to use the airport near the Beechcraft Heritage Museum. A 16-year-old girl from Rutherford County who suffered from a rare form of cancer has passed away. Taylor Filorimo was taken by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center on Tuesday night after having a seizure and becoming unresponsive. She died at the hospital around 1 p.m. Wednesday. Taylor was diagnosed in August 2009 with a rare form of renal cell carcinoma. The cancer started in her kidneys, and then spread to her lungs. She was given four to six months to live when first diagnosed, but she was able to recover. However, the cancer came back in February. Her...
