Lieutenant Fired From The Bedford County Sheriff’s Department

A high-ranking officer in the Bedford County Sheriff’s Department was fired over the weekend following an accusation of shoplifting. John Owens, who joined the department as a lieutenant when Austin Swing took over as sheriff on Sept. 1, allegedly took an item or items from the Shelbyville Walmart on Saturday, Swing said Monday. “He is no longer an employee of the Bedford County Sheriff’s Department,” Swing said. The annual Old Timers Day celebration was held over the weekend in downtown Manchester. The activities began Friday night and ran all day Saturday. The Wizzard of Oz float was named the winner of the parade contest. On the square in Manchester those attending Old Timers Day enjoyed many things to do including a petting zoo, greased pole climb, clogging, musical groups throughout the day, children’s activities, food and craft booths and an old fashioned ice cream eating contest. Man Wanted For Attempted 1st Degree Murder In Manchester Captured In Nevada

A fugitive on the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Top Ten Most Wanted list, John O’Keefe Varner, was captured Friday afternoon in Nevada. Since being placed on the Most Wanted list in February 2013, agents developed leads that Varner was in the Las Vegas area. Varner crashed the vehicle he was driving when he attempted to evade Marshals and was arrested following a foot chase. He was apprehended by deputies of the Las Vegas U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and officers with the Las Vegas Metro Police Department. Truck Fire On I-24

A truck caught fire at the scales on the eastbound side of Interstate 24 Thursday afternoon. According to deputies with the Coffee County Sheriff’s office, the driver, Andrew Noah Mashburn of Bremen, Ga., was pulling from the scales and noticed black smoke coming from the dash and it smelled like an electrical fire. He then got out of the vehicle and it was on fire. Smoke from the fire could be seen in downtown Manchester.
