Believe it or not, the no. 3 ranked Central High School Lady Raiders have another gear.

After finishing the regular season with a 25-1 record, a regular season district championship and a state ranking, the Central High School Lady Raiders turned up the intensity to postseason level Wednesday night, running Columbia out of the gym in a 74-23 win in the District 8-AAA semi-finals in Manchester.

“I think we were just excited to get back on the floor more than anything,” said Elli Chumley, who scored 5 points for the Lady Raiders in the win.

From the opening tip, the Lady Raiders were clearly intent on sending a message across the state. They have their eyes on big prizes.

The Lady Raiders led 20-4 after one quarter and 39-16 at the halftime break.

CHS pounded the ball in the paint, riding sophomore post Chloe Gannon to the tune of 25 points, followed by 20 from senior Bella Vinson – most coming from in the paint.

The Lady Raiders bounced the ball outside to sophomore guard Jalie Ruehling, who was hot from the arc, knocking down four 3-pointers and putting up 15 points. Ruehling and Gannon were named Stone Fort Mortgage co-players of the game by Thunder Radio.

Emma Fulks added four points for CHS, Mirande Medley 3 and Alivia Reel 2.

The Lady Raiders will host Tullahoma for the District 8-AAA Tournament title Friday at 6 p.m. at Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gymnasium.

Tickets will be on sale by Thursday at www.gofan.co. The Raider boys will follow the girls, hosting Tullahoma in the District Championship following the girls game. Both games will be broadcast live on Thunder Radio – 107.9 FM, 1320 AM, Manchester Go app and thunder1320.com.

SEE YOU IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP! Raiders drop Falcons, move to District finals

Coffee County didn’t panic in crunch time on Wednesday.

Lincoln County’s Owen Sandlin tied the District 8-AAA semi-finals with 20 seconds on the clock with a deep 3-pointer. But the Raiders calmly ran their offense – Trenton Scrivnor found Hayden Hullett cutting under the basket, the senior finished with just seconds to play and the Red Raiders dropped Lincoln County 53-51 Wednesday night at Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gymnasium.

The win moves the Raiders (14-10 overall) to the District 8-AAA Championship game. CHS will host Tullahoma, who upset Columbia, in the finals at 8:30 p.m. Friday night in Manchester. Tickets will go on sale Thursday.

Against the Falcons, Coffee County used a big second half to go in front. Scrivnor scored all 12 of his points in the second half, and Jaxon Vaugh picked up 8 in the final two periods.

But it was the play down the stretch that sealed the game for the Raiders.

With 37 seconds to play, Shemwell buried two free throws to give the Raiders a 51-48 lead. The Falcons answered on a 3 by Sandlin, who finished with 19, to tie the game at 20 seconds to play. Hullett’s bucket in the final seconds was the difference.

Shemwell finished with 14 points to lead the Raiders. Shemwell and Hullett were named Stone Fort Mortgage co-players of the game by Thunder Radio. Hullett scored 9 points.

Lamb agrees to deal with Atlanta Braves

If Jake Lamb can become the powerful presence he was before being saddled with injuries the past few years, the Braves may have adequately addressed one of their bench needs.

The Braves and Lamb are in agreement on a one-year contract, according to a source. The deal is pending the results of a physical and intake testing. The club has not announced the agreement.

Lamb totaled 59 homers and produced an .843 OPS for the D-backs over the 2016 and 2017 seasons. But the 30-year-old corner infielder has battled multiple injuries over the past three seasons.

CHS softball to host intra squad to benefit Dream for Weave Foundation

Coffee County Central High School’s Lady Raider softball team will host an intra-squad scrimmage on Saturday, Feb. 27, with all proceeds from the day going to benefit the “Dream for Weave Foundation.”

With the opening day of the season just around the corner, the Lady Raiders are hard at work preparing for the 2021 softball season.

On Saturday, Feb. 27, the ladies will get together for an intra-squad scrimmage and the general public is encouraged and welcome to attend (attendance capacity is 125). First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. There will be a gate charge and concessions, with all proceeds being donated to the Dream for Weave Foundation. The foundation is in honor of the late Dennis Weaver, a former CHS softball coach, public address announcer and radio voice of Coffee County sports. Weaver passed away in July of 2020.

Also, during the game there will be “Dream for Weave” merchandise available for purchase using cash or check, made payable to “Dream for Weave Foundation.” Short sleeve t-shirts will be $15, long sleeve t-shirts $20 and caps will be available for $25.

“We are very thankful that the softball program and head coach Brandon McWhorter brought this idea to us,” said foundation president Rob Clutter. “The softball program meant the world to Dennis Weaver and we are proud to be a part of this great day for CHS softball and the Weave Foundation.”

The foundation was formed with the intention to carry on Weaver’s sports legacy. The foundation has a primary goal of helping to purchase sports equipment and provide sports registration fees for children in need in Coffee County.

The intra-squad will be held at Terry Floyd Field, located behind Coffee County Central High School at 100 Red Raider Drive.

The Lady Raiders open their season March 15 when they travel to Warren County for a 7 p.m. first pitch. You can listen to Lady Raider softball all season long on Thunder Radio.

Preds pick up Saturday night win

Two goals in the first 45 seconds of the third period usually does the trick.

That outburst, featuring one of Calle Jarnkrok‘s two goals, helped the Nashville Predators to a 4-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night at Nationwide Arena. The result snaps Nashville’s two-game skid and gives them their seventh win of the season – and in arguably their best effort too.

The Preds outshot the Jackets by a 45-23 count – a season-high shot total for Nashville – and Pekka Rinne made 21 saves to collect his fourth victory of the campaign.

Nashville didn’t get the result they were looking for in Thursday’s 3-0 loss to Columbus, but the effort was there. After a spirited practice on Friday full of pace, energy and positivity, the Preds carried that vibe into Saturday’s outing, it showed, and they got rewarded.
