Morton hits 96 in spring debut for Braves

It was a great Spring Training debut for right-hander Charlie Morton during the Braves’ 5-4 victory over the Red Sox at CoolToday Park in Venice, Fla., on Sunday afternoon.

Morton pitched three shutout innings and struck out three batters. Even more impressive was that his fastball was clocked as high as 96 mph. Morton said that he was getting a feel for his pitches during the game and was able to get his pitch count up.

The Coffee Middle School Red Raider baseball team dominated a home double-header with visiting White County Thursday afternoon, combining to outscore the Warriors 19-1 in two games and picking up a pair of wins in the process.

The Raiders won game one 10-0 behind a dominating outing on the mound from 8th grader Cole Pippenger, who also reached base and scored three times.

Leadoff man Brady Wright singled, doubled and scored a pair of runs to set the offensive tone for the Raiders in game one.

Meanwhile, the Raiders pulled away for a 9-1 win in the second game. Pippenger started the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning. Pippenger later tripled and doubled and came around to score both times.

Landon Abellana reached base in all four of his at bats, coming around to score three times.

The wins make the Raiders 2-0 on the season. The Raiders travel to Warren County at 5 p.m. Monday.

SOFTBALL: CMS can’t hold early lead in Thursday loss to Lincoln County

Ava McIntosh is plunked by a pitch in a win over White County on Wednesday, March 3, 2021.

Coffee Middle School’s Lady Raiders picked up runs in each of the first two innings Thursday afternoon in Manchester, but couldn’t hold an early 2-0 lead and lost to Lincoln County 4-2.

Ella Arnold led off the first inning with a single and worked her way around the bases on an error and a wild pitch to score and put CMS up 1-0. Kellie Tucker worked a walk to lead off the second inning, moved to second on a sacrifice and eventually stole home to put CMS up 2-0.

But that was it for the scoring for the Lady Raiders. CMS could only muster 4 base runners the rest of the game and left them all stranded.

Lincoln County scored a run in the third, two in the fourth and one additional in the fifth.

The loss drops CMS to 1-1 on the season.

Late push not enough as Preds fall Thursday night

Another dramatic comeback against the Panthers wasn’t meant to be, as the Nashville Predators fell to Florida by a 5-4 final on Thursday night at Bridgestone Arena.

Nashville scored twice in the second period and added two more in the third, but as was the case in Tuesday’s loss to Carolina, another slow start for the Preds ultimately led to the final result.

Coffee Middle School’s Lady Raider softball team opened the season with a bang Wednesday afternoon in Manchester.

The Lady Raiders sent 14 runs across the plate in the second inning and disposed of visiting White County in a 15-0 mercy-rule shortened game.

CMS sent 17 batters to the plate in the second inning, nearly batting around twice.

Savannah Cooper led the offensive attack with a triple and a run scored in the first inning. She added an RBI single, a bases-clearing 3-RBI triple and a run scored in the second inning.

Haleigh Skipper got the big second inning started with a single, coming around to score on an RBI triple down the left-field line by Ava McIntosh. Skipper and McIntosh each scored a pair of runs. Kellie Tucker, Bella Hennessee and Ella Arnold all scored a pair of runs. Hennessee added an RBI single in the second. Samantha Cothran knocked in a pair of runs with a triple in the monster second inning. She also scored a run. Cara Newlin and Ella Arnold each also scored a run after earning walks.

Kaitlyn Anderson picked up the win in the circle for CMS. Anderson allowed just two hits – both singles coming in the second inning. White County’s Addison Howell singled with Maddie Rust on second, but a perfect relay throw from Newlin cut Rust down at the plate.

Anderson struck out 5 White County batters over 3 innings of work. The game was called after the top of the third.

The Lady Raiders return to the field  at 5 p.m. Thursday to host Lincoln County. That game will be broadcast live on Thunder Radio as part of the Peoples Bank & Trust Hometown Sports Series.

Raider run falls short at Blackman in region semi-finals

Coffee County’s Red Raiders made every effort to get past Blackman in the Region 4-AAA semi-finals Tuesday night in Murfreesboro. But in the end, the Blaze were just a little too powerful. CHS fell 46-39 to end the Red Raiders season.

Coffee County trailed 25-20 at the half, but a couple of quick buckets in the third quarter that included a 3-pointer by Phineas Rollman knotted the game at 25-25. But the Blaze slowly pulled ahead and maintained a small lead throughout the remainder of the contest.

Coffee County finishes the season 15-12. The Raiders were the last team standing from District 8-AAA.

Jaxon Vaughn led CHS with 10 points. Hayden Hullett put up 8. Trenton Scrivnor was in foul trouble early and finished with 7 points. Rollman also put up 7 points for the Raiders. Brady Nugent and CJ Anthony each added two points.

It is the final game for 7 Red Raider seniors: Jaxon Vaughn, CJ Anthony, Kyle Farless, Tyler Taylor, Trenton Scrivnor, Brady Vaughn and Hayden Hullett.

Hopefully, history won’t remember the 2020-2021 Lady Raider basketball season for just one game – or even just one quarter.

Coffee County Central held a 15-11 lead early in the second quarter against visiting Oakland. But the Lady Patriots went on a tear, ripping off 21 unanswered points to take a 32-15 lead into the halftime break. Oakland held on in the end, beating Coffee County 43-38 and ending the Lady Raiders season just two wins shy of a coveted return to the state tournament.

CHS made a run at the lead in the second half, but could never complete the comeback. CHS got the deficit back to 10 with 6:50 to play, and then to 8 with 3:38 on the clock on a bucket by junior Elli Chumley.

Senior Bella Vinson buried a 30-foot 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 5 at 38-33 . But the Lady Raiders followed that with a pair of missed free throws – an area CHS struggled all night.

Vinson hit a pair of free throws with 6.6 seconds to play to cut the score to 41-38, but the Lady Raiders couldn’t get a steal and Oakland iced the game at the free throw line.

The Lady Raiders were led in scoring by Vinson with 16. The senior finishes her high school career as the all-time leading scorer for the Central Lady Raiders with over 2,000 career points.

Sophomores Alivia Reel and Chloe Gannon added 8 for the Lady Raiders. Elli Chumley had 3 and Jalie Ruehling added 3.

The loss ends the Lady Raider season with a 28-2 overall record, a District 8-AAA regular season championship and a tournament championship. The Lady Raiders were the only team in District 8-AAA to advance past the region quarterfinal round.
