TENNIS: Raiders, Lady Raiders sweep Franklin County Saturday morning

Both CHS Red Raider and Lady Raider tennis teams took care of business Saturday morning – sweeping Franklin County 7-0 and 7-0.

BASEBALL: Rockets put up 21 in Saturday win

Westwood brought their big bats to round 2 of the Rockets’ conference tournament.

WMS piled up 21 runs and easily blew past Fayetteville 21-8 in an early Saturday morning game.

Rocket Vaughn Parker had 3 hits, including a double, and 3 RBIs to help lead the way for the Rockets on offense. Meanwhile, Brayden Trail had 5 RBIs and Trevor Jesse and Kaysen Lowery each knocked in a pair of runs.

Trevor Jesse, Kaysen Lowery and Cayden Trail combined to pitch 4 innings. Trail worked a solid inning – recording three outs without giving up a hit and only walking one. He needed just 12 pitches.

The win comes after the Rockets dropped their first-round tournament game to Cornersville 11-3.

CMS thumps South for the second night in a row

Coffee Middle School got 3 RBIs each from Kaitlyn Anderson and Channah Gannon to go along with two RBIs from Samantha Cothran in a 12-1 win over South Thursday afternoon. Cothran and Gannon each had a pair of hits.

Anderson struck out 7 batters for the Lady Raiders, who improve to 13-1 on the season.

Kiya Ferrell triple in extra innings powers Lady Raiders to Thursday win

It took 8 innings for Coffee County to break through with runners in scoring position Thursday night in Fayetteville.

Then Kiya Ferrell ended all the tension.

Tied with second place Lincoln County 2-2 in the top of the 8th, Ferrell bombed a triple to centerfield over the head of centerfielder Carlee Mills. Ferrell’s big two-out hit scored Brianna Shelton and Olivia Evans. The throw to third went into the dugout, sending Ferrell across the plate and giving the Lady Raiders a 5-2 lead and a win.

Up until Ferrell’s break through hit, the Lady Raiders had squandered multiple scoring opportunities – stranding 9 runners on base prior to the 8th, including 5 runners in scoring position.

Ferrell finished the night with 3 hits and two runs scored – she was named Mid Tenn Turf co-Player of the Game by Thunder Radio.

Ferrell singled in the first inning and scored on an RBI single by Munn, whose courtesy runner Aleayia Barnes scored on an error.

Munn was also named Mid Tenn Turf co-Player of the Game by Thunder Radio.

In addition to her RBI single at the plate, Munn struck out 14 Lady Falcons in the circle and worked out of a few big jams. In the sixth inning with the score tied at 2-2, Lady Falcon Mia Brown reached second base on an error with no outs. Munn proceeded to strike out the next three batters.

And in the bottom of the 8th, Lincoln County got a two-out single and an error on the Lady Raiders brought the tying run to the plate in the form of Abby Flynt, who Munn struck out to end the game. Munn allowed 6 hits and just 1 earned run.

The Lady Raiders are now 20-3-1 on the season. Friday’s game at Siegel has been postponed. The Lady Raiders are now 8-0 in District 8-AAA play and Lincoln County falls to 6-2, giving CHS control of its destiny.

CHS will travel to Tullahoma for a 6 p.m. game Monday and you can hear that live on Thunder Radio.

Lady Rocket softball puts up 14 runs; Rockets fall in tournament opener

Westwood’s softball team took Fayetteville City to task Thursday night, getting at least one run scored from every player in the starting lineup in a 14-4 win.

Paisley Campbell led the way or the Lady Rockets – She was hit by a pitch three times and walked once to score our runs for Westwood.

Maggie Brei added a double and two singles to go along with a pair of runs scored.

Rockets fall behind early, can’t catch up

Westwood fell behind 8-0 in the opening round of the Rockets conference tournament and just never could turn it around in an 11-3 loss to Cornersville Thursday afternoon in Manchester.

The Rockets were outhit 8-3.

Brayden Trail, Trevor Jesse and Cayden Trail were the only three to muster up a hit for the Rockets.

Davis McKenzie allowed 3 runs and struck out 4 batters over 4 innings of work. Meanwhile, Dylen Trail pitched 3 innings and allowed 3 runs (none earned) and struck out a pair.

Lady Raiders fall 7-0 in non-district contest Wednesday

Coffee County’s Lady Raider softball team couldn’t muster any hits and dropped a 7-0 decision Wednesday night in a non-district home game against the Nashville Lady Knights. – a game you heard live on Thunder Radio.

With four games in a row this week, including a big District 8-AAA game Thursday at Lincoln County, Lady Raider head coach Brandon McWhorter took the opportunity Wednesday to rest most of his regular starters.

It was a tall task for the Lady Raiders who were in the lineup to deal with Lady Knight starter Annalise Wood. She tossed a no hitter and struck out 19 Lady Raiders batters over 7 innings of work.

Lady Raider Haidyn Campbell was hit with the loss. She gave up 3 runs – 2 earned – over 4 innings of work. She struck out 5 batters. The loss drops CHS to 19-3-1 on the year.

The Lady Raiders take on the Lincoln County Lady Falcons at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Fayetteville. You can hear that game live on Thunder Radio.

CMS softball thumps South 16-0

Coffee County’s Lady Raiders put a beating on South Wednesday, a game that was called with the Lady Raiders up 16-0 and rain and cold weather settling in.

Ella Arnold had a pair of doubles and three runs scored for CHS to lead the way.

Every player in the CMS lineup scored a run except for Ava McIntosh, who had two RBIs on a single.

CMS improves to 12-4 on the season.

BASEBALL: Raiders fall in tight series finale in Lawrenceburg

Coffee County put the tying run on third base and the go ahead run on second in the top of the seventh and final inning Wednesday afternoon in Lawrence County.

But the Lawrence County Wildcats picked up a strikeout to end the game and split the two-game District 8-AAA series with the CHS Red Raiders.

Trailing 3-1 in the top of the seventh in Lawrenceburg, Raider sophomore Jacob Holder singled up the middle to send Carter McKenzie across the plate and cut the score to 3-2. Holder’s single advanced Hayden Hullett to third and Holder moved to second on a throw to the plate. But the Raiders never could tie it up.

Holder was tagged with the loss on the mound despite a solid performance. The sophomore right-hander allowed 3 runs – only 1 earned – on 3 hits over five and 1/3 innings. He struck out 8 and walked 4.

Braden Brown retired two batters in relief with no trouble.

Wyatt Nugent had a double and an RBI for the Raiders. Hullett tacked on a pair of hits and McKenzie had a hit and a run scored.

The loss drops the Raiders to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in District 8-AAA play with two series remaining. Lawrence County remains atop the district standings with the series split. Coffee County beat the Wildcats 6-2 in the opening game, giving the Wildcats their first district loss since March 16.

SOFTBALL: Westwood offense goes wild in 18-run performance

The Westwood Lady Rocket softball team went wild Wednesday night, piling up 18 runs in an 18-9 win over Community in Manchester.

The Lady Rockets got two doubles and two singles from Liza Freeze , who also came across the plate to score four times. Paisley Campbell also scored four times, including a home run to centerfield in the first inning.

Lily Norman scored 3 times for Westwood, walking and hitting a triple in the first inning. She tripled and was stranded in the second and walked and scored in the fourth.

Meeker pitches gem as Raider baseball drops first place Wildcats

Lawrence County visited Manchester Tuesday having not lost a District game in nearly a month – a one-run loss to Lincoln County back on March 16.

Now the Wildcats have two of those district losses.

Raider senior Griffin Meeker was locked in on the mound, not giving up a single earned run and striking out six over a seven-inning complete game that took him just 79 pitches to finish as the Central High School Red Raider baseball team dropped Lawrence County 6-2 in the first game of a two-game series.

The only two runs allowed by Meeker were unearned in the top of the fourth.

Meeker and the Raider defense got into a bases loaded jam in the third inning with nobody out. But Meeker picked up a strikeout and then induced an inning-ending, 5-4-3 double play.

Meanwhile, the Raider offense picked up timely hits – including a three-run bottom of the sixth inning to get Meeker some breathing room. Brady Nugent knocked in a pair with a double down the first-base line and two outs to expand the Raider lead to 6-2.

Braden Brown also had a pair of hits and a run scored. Wyatt Nugent had a hit, a run scored an an RBI. Jacob Holder, Lane Spry, Brown, and Nolan Jernigan all doubled for the Raiders. Meeker had a triple.

The Raider are now 10-4 on the season. The series moves to Lawrence County Wednesday.
