Capacity, concession restrictions lifted for Coffee County Central sports

Capacity limitations and restrictions on food sales for all athletic events at Coffee County Central High School have now been lifted.

CHS athletic director Rebecca Koger made the announcement Thursday afternoon.

The school has been dealing with varying capacity limitations and restrictions on concession sales due to COVID-19 pandemic all school year long.

With Governor Bill Lee’s announcement earlier this week that retires the Tennessee Pledge and lifts most all restrictions on business and masks across the state, the TSSAA is now free to lift any remaining limitations.

CHS football pushes back spring practice

Coffee County Central High School’s football team was scheduled to officially open spring football practice this week, culminating in an intra-squad game on May 17.

However, Red Raider head coach Doug Greene told Thunder Radio that dates have been pushed to next week after the unexpected resignation of defensive coordinator Roger Haynes, who had to leave the program due to family health reasons.

The untimely departure of Haynes leaves Greene interviewing defensive coordinator prospects this week with hopes to make a hire by next week. Spring practice will begin next week and the date for the spring game is still undecided, but could be held May 19 or 20. Thunder Radio will update information as it is available.

You can hear Red Raider football on Thunder Radio this upcoming fall.

Coffee County’s Lady Raider softball team celebrated senior night in style Wednesday – using 8 hits and four Lawrence County errors to thump visiting Lawrence County 10-3 – a game you heard live on Thunder Radio.

The win wraps up the District 8-AAA schedule for Coffee County with a perfect 12-0 record.

It was senior night for the Lady Raiders and seniors Justus Turner, Eliza Carden and Keri Munn all found ways to contribute on the night. Turner got the scoring started when she lifted a home run into the trees beyond the left centerfield fence in the second inning.

Meanwhile, Keri Munn continued to dominate in the pitching circle. She struck out 11 batters over 7 innings and allowed just 5 hits. Carden had a hit and a run scored for CHS.

But the underclassmen did their part, too. Kaitlyn Davis blasted her 10th home run of the season and also picked up an RBI on a fielder’s choice. Emily Schuster had a hit and an RBI and Olivia Evans added two hits, including a double.

The Lady Raiders improve to 24-4-1 overall with the win. They are set to host Huntland on Monday, May 3 in the final regular season game of the year before opening the district tournament later next week.

Raiders sweep Shelbyville with 12-0 Wednesday win

For the second night in a row, the Coffee County Central baseball team shutout Shelbyville and beat the Eagles 12-0 in a mercy-rule shortened game.

Jacob Holder pitched a one-hit shutout for the Raiders – striking out 9 Eagle batters over five innings of work. He walked three batters.

For the second night in a row the Raiders piled up double-digit hits – using 15 hits and a pair of Shelbyville errors.

Griffin Meeker (2), Lane Spry (2), Nolan Jernigan (2) Wyatt Nugent (4) and Braden Brown (3) all had multiple hits for the Raiders. Nugent drove in four runs and scored one. Nugent and Meeker each had doubles.

The win wraps the District 8-AAA regular season with a 7-5 record and firmly plants the Raiders in fourth place in the final standings. They will host Columbia at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 6 in the opening game of the District 8-AAA tournament.

The Raiders are scheduled to have a flurry of non-district games to close the season: at Cookeville on Thursday, at Warren County on Friday, hosting Cookeville on Saturday and hosting La Vergne on Monday.

Raider baseball blows out Shelbyville 10-0

Griffin Meeker was about as sharp as he has been all season on the mound and the Raider offense pounded out 14 hits to blowout visiting Shelbyville 10-0 Tuesday afternoon at Powers Field – a game you heard live on Thunder Radio.

Coffee County was hot at the plate and punished the Shelbyville pitching staff. Lane Spry, Wyatt Nugent and Jacob Holder all doubled. Meanwhile, Brady Nugent tripled, doubled, tripled, drove in three runs and scored a run.

Wyatt Nugent and Carter McKenzie each had three hit nights at the plate. Lane Spry, Nolan Jernigan, Holder, Nolan Jernigan and McKenzie each had an RBI.

Meanwhile, Meeker was lights out on the mound for the Raiders. The senior needed just 61 pitches to complete five innings of shutout baseball. He had a perfect game going through four innings before running into a little trouble in the fifth, but escaped a bases-loaded jam with the shutout in tact. Meeker allowed just 2 hits and struck out 7.

Coffee County improves to 14-8 overall with the win and 6-5 in District 8-AAA play. CHS will travel to Shelbyville at 6 p.m. Wednesday for the final district game of the regular season. Regardless of the outcome, the Raiders will finish 4th in the final regular season standings.

Raider soccer ties Franklin County, stays alive for third

Coffee County Central’s soccer season is winding down, and the Red Raiders are still alive for third place in District 8-AAA play.

After trailing 1-0 at the half, Red Raider Josue Salinas buried a goal in the 51st minute to tie the game at 1-1 and that is where it finished.

Granted a win would have been better, but the tie keeps CHS alive for third place. The Raiders travel to Lincoln County for a 6 p.m. start Thursday before returning home for senior night on Friday, which will be broadcast live on Thunder Radio.
