Juuse Saros made 28 saves in Game 2, but the Predators were unable to solve Carolina on Wednesday night, as Nashville fell to Carolina by a 3-0 final. The result sees the Canes take a 2-0 series lead in the best-of-seven matchup as things now shift to Nashville.
Carolina goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic stopped all 32 Predators shots he faced, and Sebastian Aho scored twice for the Hurricanes in a contest that saw the visitors make their fair share of improvements from Game 1, but they were unable to find a way to prevail.

FOOTBALL: Raiders host Red-Black game

Football fans got their first glimpse of the 2021 Coffee County Red Raiders on Thursday at Carden-Jarrell Field as the team held an intra-squad for parents and fans.
The scrimmage wrapped up spring practice for the Raiders as they return to workouts to prepare for the season opener in three months when they travel to Franklin County.
“I thought it was a good spring for us,” said Doug Greene, who is entering his third season as the Red Raider head football coach. “We did a lot of fundaments. A whole lot of fundamentals and I think we got done as much as we could have gotten done.
“We didn’t do as much scheme as I wanted to,” added Greene, “But what good does scheme do you if you can’t shed a block or wrap up and tackle?”
The Raiders got most all players on the field Thursday – minus some with injuries. Quarterback Connor Shemwell was limited but still was able to throw during a 7-on-7 sessions. The soon-to-be senior is coming off of ACL surgery after injuring his knee during basketball.
Tailbacks Konor Heaton and Tristan Galy, who will both be juniors this fall, stood out for the Raiders. As did soon-to-be junior Jahlin Osborne, who used his 6-foot-3 frame to snag a touchdown over the middle from his tight end position.
Coach Greene will be a guest on the Coffee Coaches Show Saturday, May 22. The show airs from 10-11 a.m. live from Al White Ford Lincoln. Listen at 107.9 FM, 1320 AM, 106.7 FM and at thunder1320.com.
Lady Raiders fall in region championship; will travel to Soddy Daisy Friday
Coffee County seemed to never get comfortable in the Region 4-AAA championship softball game Wednesday night in Manchester, managing just 4 hits in an 8-3 loss to visiting Siegel High School.
The CHS Lady Raiders actually took a brief 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Chesnie Cox reached on an infield single to plate Madison Pruitt and Olivia Evans, who motored all the way home from second base on the throw to first.
But the lead would be short lived. Siegel’s Sam Whitwell blasted a 3-run home run in the top of the fourth to put the Stars back in front for good. It was Siegel’s second home run of the game – Reagan Duran hit a leadoff home run in the first to put the Stars up 1-0.

Coffee County’s only other run came in the bottom of the seventh when Chesnie Cox scored on a fielder’s choice hit into by Keri Munn.
The Lady Raiders struggled defensively, committing 4 errors. Munn was tagged with the loss – she struck out 13 but allowed 8 hits and walked 4. Five of Siegel’s 8 runs were earned.
Despite the loss, the Lady Raiders are still alive in the postseason. With a 29-5 record, CHS will travel to Soddy Daisy on Friday, May 21 for the state sectional game. The winner will advance to the TSSAA Spring Fling State Tournament next week in Murfreesboro. The loser’s season will be over.

Preds fall in opener of Stanley Cup playoffs
Filip Forsberg and Erik Haula tallied for the Predators, but a pair of goals from Jordan Staal helped the Carolina Hurricanes to a 5-2 win in Game 1 on Monday night at PNC Arena. The result gives Carolina a 1-0 series lead over Nashville to start the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with Game 2 set for Wednesday.
The Preds were pleased with areas of their game on Monday, and they entered the third period tied 2-2 with the Canes, but Carolina scored twice in the first eight minutes of the final frame to pull away and hand Nashville a loss to begin the postseason.

Titans sign former Vandy receiver
The Titans have added former Vanderbilt receiver Kalija Lipscomb to the team’s roster.
Lipscomb took part in the team’s rookie minicamp over the weekend as one of four tryout players, and he was signed on Monday.
Also on Monday, the Titans waived receiver Rashard Davis and linebacker Davin Bellamy (non-football injury).
In four years at Vanderbilt, Lipscomb caught 198 passes for 2,356 yards and 22 touchdowns. He was signed by the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent after the 2020 NFL Draft, and has spent time on practice squads with the Chiefs and Packers.
Lipscomb (6-1, 201) participated in 2020 Reese’s Senior Bowl and the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine.
Lipscomb went through practices and meetings during the course of this past weekend’s minicamp. He appeared to battle through cramps during Saturday’s session, as he went inside Saint Thomas Sports Park on two different occasions before returning. But he showed off some nifty footwork during individual drills.

ONE STEP CLOSER: Lady Raiders dismantle Smyrna, advance to region championship game

One more win.
That’s all the Coffee County Central Lady Raiders need to reach the state tournament after breaking out their big bats and thumping Smyrna 11-1 in the Region 4-AAA semifinals Monday night at Terry Floyd Field in Manchester.
The game ended early via the mercy rule when senior Eliza Carden ripped a single up the middle to score a run in the bottom of the fifth. Coffee County has now outscored its opponents 41-1 in four postseason games.

Braves pitcher to miss months after punching bench
Huascar Ynoa was constructing one of baseball’s best stories before he broke his right hand by punching the padded dugout bench during Sunday afternoon’s 10-9 loss to the Brewers at American Family Field.
Now, the Braves right-hander might be sidelined for at least three months.
“It’s going to be a couple of months, probably, that he’s going to be down,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “Then, [he’s] going to end up having to get built back up. I hate to see that. The young guy was doing so good. It’s going to be a big loss for us.”
Ynoa threw the frustration-filled punch after allowing the Brewers nine hits and five runs over just 4 1/3 innings. He experienced initial discomfort, but the pain didn’t truly begin to build until he flew back to Atlanta on the team charter Sunday night.
Members of the Braves’ medical staff confirmed the fracture on Monday morning.
“It’s a shame,” Snitker said of Ynoa, who is 4-2 with a 3.02 ERA through nine outings (eight starts). “He’s not the first and he won’t be the last. There’s probably no one who feels any worse than him, too.”

The winner will advance to the region championship on Wednesday, May 19 and to the state sectional on Friday, May 21. The season will be over for the loser of Monday’s game.
First pitch is set for 7 p.m. Monday at Terry Floyd Field and tickets are available at the gate with no capacity limitations or mask requirements. The field is located behind CHS at 100 Red Raider Dr in Manchester. Entrance to parking is off of Kennedy Dr.
