Coffee County Names Micah Williams New Boy’s Basketball Coach

New CHS basketball coach Micah Williams

New CHS basketball coach Micah Williams

Describing the opportunity as “a dream come true,” Micah Williams was named the new head coach for the Coffee County Central High School boy’s basketball team late Tuesday afternoon.  Williams, a 2006 graduate of CHS, has been an assistant coach for the last 2 seasons for the Red Raiders.

Principal Dr. Joey Vaughn announced the hiring by saying he was “incredibly excited about the opportunity this hire brings to the basketball program.”   Vaughn went on to say “This young man is invested in this community and expressed a commitment not only to the Coffee County basketball program, but to Coffee County as a whole.  Micah left this community as a Division 1 basketball player and a professional player and chose to come back to this community because he wants to be here.  That was a huge factor in our decision.”  Vaughn also saw another benefit to William’s time away from the community saying “Micah’s Division 1 and professional playing experience brings credibility to the players that relates better to our players than any previous coaching experience would.”

Williams is the most celebrated Red Raider basketball player in the last 30 years and arguably one of the best players to ever play for Coffee County/Manchester.  After graduating CHS in 2006, Micah played for 4 years at East Tennessee State University where he graduated in 2011.  Micah went on to play professional basketball in England and Japan.  Williams suffered a broken foot in his 2nd season overseas “which turned out to be a blessing in disguise” according to Williams.  The injury allowed Micah “settle down, get married and begin his coaching career at Coffee County.”

When asked who he would like to thank, Coach Williams responded to Thunder Radio with the following:

“ I would like to give a special thank you to my wife Holly Williams. I want to thank her for being by my side, keeping me level headed, and always being supportive. I truly appreciate everything that she does for me…Thank you for your love and support… I love you!

I would like to thank Dr. Joey Vaughn for his support and trust in me to lead this program. Dr. Vaughn has been a pleasure to work for and with over the past 2 years. A great leader, a great principal, but most importantly a great man… It has been great working with him, and I’m definitely looking forward to many years of the same.

“I would like to thank Dr. Ladonna McFall for her support and for giving me the opportunity to lead the basketball program”

I would like to thank Coach Andrew Taylor. My former high school basketball coach. Andrew has been nothing but the best to me for many years. Coach Taylor, not only was my coach, but to this day, an outstanding mentor and I appreciate everything he has done for me over the years. Thank you!

Next, I would like to thank Coach Ben Holl. Ben and I have worked together as assistants over last 2 seasons. Ben has been phenomenal to work with. A guy who does a lot of things behind the scenes that helps keep our program running. It is always great to work with someone who truly understands the definition of hard work and dedication and is striving to be the best teacher and coach that he can be.

Last but definitely not least… I want to thank my family. Wysteria Williams (mother), Ralph Williams (father), and Taurean Williams (brother). My family has always been there for me. At an early age, the foundation of a positive leader was shown to me… They pushed me and encouraged me to never settle for mediocre and to this day I strive to be the best husband, son, brother, coach, and role model that I can be. I can’t thank my family enough, for their love and support. Thank you guys… I love you all.

It is truly a blessing to be the Head Basketball Coach at Coffee County Central High School. I would like to thank the community of Manchester for your many years of support and I ask that the support will increase for these kids in this program. Thank you in advance!!”

Williams, who will take over immediately, wants to hit the ground running as he will prepare his team for spring tryouts and summer workouts.  Williams expects 3 year assistant Ben Holl to stay on as an assistant.  Williams hopes to add two assistant coaches in the coming months.  Micah Williams will be a guest on Saturday’s Coffee Coaches Show at 10 AM.  The show is broadcast live from Al White Ford/Lincoln and folks are encouraged to come out and meet the coach.  The show can be heard on Thunder Radio (AM 1320, 107.9 FM & WMSRradio.com)

Motlow Looking For New Men’s Basketball Coach–Sligh Moving Up

Matt Sligh moving up to Division 1 Missouri State

Matt Sligh moving up to Division 1 Missouri State

After two successful seasons as men’s head basketball coach at Motlow College, Matt Sligh left to become an assistant coach at Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo.
Sligh was hired at Motlow during the summer of 2013 after former Motlow head coach Jerry Nichols accepted the head coaching position at fellow Tennessee Community College Athletic Association member Southwest Tennessee. Sligh had spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., and had recruited multiple Motlow players to WJC.
He became the 11th coach for the Bucks since the school began playing men’s basketball in 1969, and inherited one of the nation’s most successful junior/community college programs over the previous half-dozen years. Sligh has upheld that winning tradition, following a 14-14 campaign in his first season with last year’s 23-6 team that finished second in the conference during the regular season and advanced to the semifinals of the TCCAA tournament.
Sligh will join upcoming junior guard Dequan Miller who recently signed with Missouri State.
Motlow is now searching for its 3rd head coach since the end of the 2012-13 season.

Westwood Soccer Finishes in 2nd Place at Red Raider Invitational

Leo Botello scores a goal off a header against Harris in Saturday’s tournament match

Facing the challenge of playing 3 games in 5 hours, the Westwood Rockets fought off exhaustion to finish in 2nd place in the inaugural Red Raider Invitational.  The Rockets finished the day with a record of 2 and 1 on the day and finish with 22 points.  Harris Middle was the lone team to beat Westwood as they won the tournament with 26 points.

Westwood opened the day with a pair of back to back games.  The Rockets got a strong effort in a 4 to 0 win over Madison Academy of Huntsville at 10:15 AM in their first game.  The Rockets got a pair of goals from Leo Botello and single goals from Juan Penaloza and Andres Cavalie.

This set up a match up with Harris at noon.  The Eagles of Harris got 4 first half goals as they dominated the time of possession against a tiring Rockets defense.  The deficit should have been larger except for the sparkling play of Westwood keeper Cailan McLean who had 3 remarkable saves in the first half to finish with 6 for the match.   Leo Botello got both Westwood goals on a pair of great individual efforts.  In the first half, Botello hit a beautiful sliding toe punch just inside the 18 yard box at the 13th minute.  In the 2nd half, he headed home a corner kick from Penaloza.  Westwood’s defense shutout the Eagles in the second half, but Westwood ended up falling 4 to 2.

The Rockets got a short break until 3:00 when they took on Algood.  The Putnam County Redskins played a physical contest but Westwood was able to use their speed and excellent passing to take a 3 to 0 lead into the half.  Juan Penaloza got the scoring started for Westwood as he found the back of the net in the 5th minute.  Leo Basurto, who did not start the match due to cramps, came off the bench to score goals in the 25th and 28th minutes to give Westwood a 3 to 0 lead at the half.  Rocket keeper Cailan McLean did not allow an Algood goal in the 2nd half as he got his second shutout of the day leading the Rockets to a 3 to 0 win.   Westwood will play host to Webb on Tuesday night at Dyer-Bouldin Field.  That match will kick off at 5:00 PM.

Coffee County Middle School’s Scottie Duke came up one out short in his bid to pitch a no-hitter on Saturday against Boyd Christian School at CCMS.  Duke, who finished with a 2 hitter, pitched the Raiders to a 12 to 1 win as he finished the day with 4 strikeouts in the 5 inning game.  The Raiders scored in all 4 of their at-bats as they used a 6 run explosion in the 3rd inning to but the game out of reach.  Coffee County sent 12 hitters to the plate in the frame that lasted nearly 45 minutes.   Trace Bryant led off the game with a triple on the first pitch he saw and added a 2 RBI single in the 2nd inning to pace Coffee County offensively.  Bryant also scored 3 runs for the Raiders.  Colton Kerber had a triple and a single with 3 RBI on the day, Andrew Mahaffey had a double and a single with an RBI and Bryson Hullett was 2 for 2 with a walk and 3 runs scored as well.  With the win, Coffee County completed a 3 and 0 week to run their record to 6-1-1 on the season.  The Raiders are back in action on Thursday as they play host to South Franklin in a 5:00 PM conference game.
