Coffee County Swept at Lincoln County on Tuesday

A cold shooting spell in the 2nd quarter, coupled with an injury to Coffee County sophomore post player Alliyah Williams, combined to lift the Lincoln County Lady Falcons to a come from behind, 61 to 43 win on Tuesday night in high school basketball. Williams injured her knee 2 minutes into the game as she collided with a Lady Falcon player and missed the remainder of the contest. She will be evaluated on Wednesday to attempt to determine the severity of the injury. Following her injury, Coffee County put together a 10 – 0 run as they built a 7 point lead in the 1st quarter on Lincoln County. The Lady Falcons turned up tempo in the 2nd quarter outscoring the Lady Raiders 17 to 9 to give Lincoln County a halftime advantage they would not relinquish. Holli Smithson led Coffee County in scoring with 13 points as the junior also added 5 steals to be named the Gateway Tire and Service Center player of the game. Bailey Morgan and Lindsey Perry each finished with 6 points as the Lady Raiders dropped to 6 and 7 on the year and 0 and 3 in district play.

The Red Raiders also had trouble finding their shooting touch as they shot an abysmal 27% from the field in a 53 to 33 defeat at the hands of the Falcons. The Falcons raced out to an 11 to 0 lead 3 minutes into the game as they held Coffee County to 4 points in the 1st period. The Raiders committed just 12 turnovers in the game but were outrebounded 35 to 22 by Lincoln County. Junior Grant Sadler led Coffee County in scoring as he netted 12 points and was named the Gateway Tire and Service Center player of the game. Seniors Wyatt Day and Kohl Young each finished with 5 points. The loss drops Coffee County’s record to 7 and 7 on the year and 0 and 3 in district play.
Coffee County travels to Columbia on Friday night as they take on the Lions and Lady Lions in district action. The girls’ game will tip off at 6 PM, we will begin our broadcast with the Powers’ Storage Pregame Show at 5:50.

Alontae Taylor claimed yet another honor on Monday as he was named to the 2015 MaxPreps Football Sophomore All American Team. Taylor, a Vanderbilt commitment, just completed his second season as the starting quarterback for Coffee County CHS. Taylor was one of only 2 Tennessee players named to the team as he joined Camron Johnson of Brentwood Academy on the 2nd team offense. Taylor, who is listed as an athlete on the squad, rushed 206 times for 1,547 yards and 19 touchdowns this past season for Coffee County. Taylor accounted for 2,346 total offensive yards and 22 touchdowns as the signal caller for the Red Raiders. Taylor was named to the MaxPreps Freshman All American Team last season and is the first Coffee County Central High School athlete to be named a football All American. Jets Ground Predators on Tuesday Night at Bridgestone Arena

Pete Weber’s Postgame Report

Drew Stafford scored two power-play goals and Connor Hellebuyck made 43 saves to help the Winnipeg Jets to a 4-1 win against the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena on Tuesday.

Ben Chiarot and Alexander Burmistrov scored for Winnipeg (18-19-2).

Colin Wilson scored and Pekka Rinne made 14 saves for Nashville (19-14-7).

Stafford gave the Jets a 1-0 lead at 10:43 of the first period on a goal from the slot on the power play. Defenseman Tyler Myers entered the zone and delivered a backhand pass to Stafford, who was able to shoot the puck past Rinne for his 13th goal.

“It was a great play by [Myers] just driving it wide,” Stafford said. “Just go to the net with your stick on the ice, and I was able to sneak one by. I was just trying to get good wood on it. I wasn’t really putting it anywhere specific.”

Stafford scored again at 8:42 of the second period on the power play on a redirection in front of Rinne. Defenseman Tobias Enstrom took the original slap shot from the point that Stafford was able to redirect for his second goal of the game and his 14th of the season.

“It was a great shot by [Enstrom],” Stafford said. “I was just able to get my stick on it, kind of raking the leaves in front of the net there a little bit. I wasn’t exactly screening [Rinne] where I was supposed to be, but I was lucky to get a good stick on it. We’ll take it because we’ve pretty much had goose eggs for a long time on our second unit.”

Hellebuyck made 17 saves in the first period to keep Winnipeg in a position to take the lead. The Jets felt that withstanding that push in the first period by the Predators was the most important part of the game.

“That’s five in eight for us on the road and the last four,” Jets coach Paul Maurice said. “It’s a long flight from Anaheim and a two-hour time change so you’re worried about the first 10 minutes more than any other part of the hockey game, and they know it so they come with an awful lot of speed and an awful lot of jump.

“I almost think it was a benefit to [Hellebuyck] that they shot absolutely everything. There might have been some seam plays and some other plays that never developed, but it was just keep ripping it at the net. He was rested, he was the freshest guy in our lineup and he looked great.”

The Jets offense struggled to create a high volume of shots but were opportunistic with their chances. They scored two goals in their first six shots to jump out to the lead despite being heavily outshot by the Predators.

“We just kind of had a tough time handling the puck and a tough time really doing a whole lot,” Jets forward Blake Wheeler said. “That’s when your goaltender has got to be great when you have a slow start, and he hung in there and gave us a chance. That seemed to kind of suck the life out of them a little bit.”

Chiarot gave the Jets a 3-0 lead at 5:05 of the third period. Chiarot attempted a centering feed to forward Mark Scheifele that went off of Predators defenseman Mattias Ekholm’s stick and past Rinne for his first goal.

“I thought it was Ben Chiarot’s best game of the year,” Maurice said. “He was fantastic. His jump, [he had] energy in his game.”

Wilson scored to make it 3-1 at 13:33 of the third period. Predators defenseman Roman Josi joined the rush and made a pass that Wilson was able to one-time past Hellebuyck.

“He played terrific,” Predators coach Peter Laviolette said of Wilson. “He had lots of opportunities. It was nice to see him cash in. Again, it probably gets frustrating when you get those opportunities and they don’t go, so it was nice to see him get one.”

Nashville has scored two goals or fewer in 14 of its past 23 games. The Predators’ record in those games in 1-11-2.

“I don’t know, maybe we don’t get enough quality chances,” Josi said. “I don’t know. Everybody has to do a better job. We have to get to the net more. We have to get some dirty goals. We have to get some pucks through from the point. Everyone has to do a better job, and obviously there are a lot of things we have to do better.”

Burmistrov scored an empty-net goal with 29.4 seconds remaining to give the Jets a 4-1 lead.

The Predators are back on the ice on Friday night as they travel to Colorado.  Thunder Radio will bring you the broadcast of that game immediately following Coffee County CHS basketball.

The Coffee County Middle School Lady Raider defense held White County to single digit points in all four quarters in a 37 to 15 win on Monday night in CTC basketball action. After a slow offensive start, the Lady Raiders reeled off 10 second quarter points to take an 11 point lead into intermission. The Lady Raiders were able to stretch their lead to 19 points in the 4th quarter as Coach George Pearson emptied his bench. Julia Duncan led Coffee County in scoring with 19 points. Bella Vinson added 6 points and Jenna Garrettson finished with 4. The Lady Raiders record now stands at 12 and 0 on the season.

A tenacious White County defense forced several turnovers in the boys’ game as White County beat Coffee County 47 to 34. Coffee County was able to keep it close in the first quarter before White County’s full court press generated a 6 point run in a 55 second span of the 1st quarter helping the Warriors built a 14 point halftime lead. Brandon Jernigan led Coffee County in scoring with 10 points while Hayden Hullett added 8 points. Blanton Brown and Kyle Farless each finished with six points. Coffee Middle travels up Highway 55 on Friday night for a non-conference game with Morrison. The girls game will tip off at 6 PM.

Lady Bucks Look to Build on Strong Start as Basketball Season Begins Second Half

The Motlow Lady Bucks will look to build on one of the program’s best starts to a season in recent memory when they open the second half of the basketball campaign by hosting the Martin Methodist College JV squad on Monday, Jan. 11, at 7:30 p.m. at Copperweld Arena.

The Lady Bucks (7-6, 3-4) under second-year head coach Dominic Tharpe have brought a renewed excitement to the program with an influx of new talent and a more dynamic, exciting style of play. After rebuilding his roster from scratch, Tharpe has guided the program to the point where it can compete for the upper half of the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association (TCCAA) standings.

Motlow will have an early opportunity to open the second half of conference play with a strong statement when Southwest Tennessee comes to Copperweld Arena on Friday, Jan. 15. The Lady Bucks and Lady Saluqis are tied, along with Chattanooga State, for fourth place in the TCCAA standings. Motlow will turn around and host Dyersburg State, who sits just one game behind the Lady Bucks, on Saturday.

The Lady Bucks have been led in scoring by a pair of talented freshmen. Sydney Floyd has perhaps been the team’s most consistent player, averaging 13.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, one assist and almost three steals per game. Ajaycia Cotton has taken on the role of ‘sixth man’ very well, averaging 11 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.5 steals per contest.

Shakala Griffin joins Floyd in averaging 5.5 rebounds per game, but four other players average over four boards per outing. The team’s balance is further evidenced by the fact that three other players besides Floyd and Cotton average over six points per game, including Taylor Hayes, Aja Robertson and Griffin.

Monday’s game against Martin Methodist begins a six-game home stand for the Lady Bucks that will end when Volunteer State comes to Copperweld Arena on Jan. 23. Homecoming is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 6, with Roane State as the opposition. The final home game of the regular season is Saturday, Feb. 20, when Jackson State comes to Moore County.

One important note for Lady Bucks’ fans during the second half of the season is the new starting time for conference games. Traditionally, the women have always played first; but that will change beginning with the Martin Methodist visit, although it is not a TCCAA tilt. For the remainder of the season the men will play first during conference dates. For example, on Jan. 15, the men play at 5:30 p.m. and the women follow at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, Jan. 16, the men will play Dyersburg at 2 p.m. with the women following at 4 p.m.

Trailing by as many as 12 points in the 2nd half, a late Coffee County rally came up short at Grundy County on Saturday as the Lady Raider basketball team dropped a 62 to 56 decision to open the 2016 portion of their schedule. Playing their first game since December 21st, the Lady Raiders seemed to struggle to find their rhythm on both ends of the floor as they committed 23 fouls and suffered at least 10 second half turnovers.   The loss spoiled a splendid 2nd half performance by junior Holli Smithson as she has 16 of her team high 18 points after the halftime break.  For her play, Smithson was named the Coffee Coaches Show Player of the Game.  Alliyah Wiliams finished the game with 15 points and Abby Morgan added 11 points as the Lady Raiders saw their record fall to 6 and 6 on the year.

The Red Raiders got off to a fast start as they dispatched the Yellow Jackets 57 to 38.  Coffee County held Grundy County to 4 points in the 2nd quarter which boosted them to a 17 point lead at intermission.  Coach Micah Williams was able to get plenty of minutes for his reserves as 10 different Red Raiders got in the scoring column to improve Coffee County’s record to 7 and 6 on the season.  Sophomore DeAaron Rozier came off the bench to earn the Coffee Coaches Show Player of the Game.award as he finished with 10 to tie himself for team high honors.  Kohl Young also finished with 10 points as the senior continues to play the best basketball of his career.  Stephen Sullivan finished with 9 points and Grant Sadler added 7 points in the non district win.

Mattias Ekholm finally ended the Nashville Predators’ overtime jinx on Saturday night.

The Swedish defenseman scored with 1:51 left in the extra period, lifting the Predators to a 2-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes and their first overtime victory in seven tries this season.

Ekholm corralled a deflected pass from Filip Forsberg, skated in on Eddie Lack and beat the goalie top shelf.

”Obviously overtimes haven’t been our best so far,” Ekholm said. ”We just tried to wait them out and go to offense as soon as we could. As it is, 3-on-3 is a break somewhere and you’ve got to make something happen. Fortunately I got that one past Lack tonight.”

Paul Gaustad tied the game for Nashville with a short-handed goal in the second period. Ekholm assisted and Gaustad got his first goal of the season.

Victor Rask put Carolina ahead 8:58 into the first with his 11th goal.

Nashville’s Pekka Rinne had 27 saves and Lack stopped 19.

Predators coach Peter Laviolette praised Carolina’s defensive pressure.

”We were a little bit slow catching up to that in the first 10 minutes of the first period,” said Laviolette, who coached the Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup title in 2006. ”But in the second I thought we turned it up really well.”

Nashville captain and defenseman Shea Weber played in his 724th game for the franchise, passing Martin Erat for second on the club’s career list. David Legwand played in 956 games.

Nashville hosts Winnipeg on Tuesday night before heading on a four-game road trip.Thunder Radio will bring you the broadcast of that game following our Red Raider basketball broadcast.

Predators Fall to Dallas on New Years Eve

Pete Weber’s Postgame Report

Preds Logo2Despite scoring six of his nine goals this season in December, Dallas Stars rookie forward Mattias Janmark said he doesn’t wish the month would somehow continue beyond Thursday.

Janmark broke a tie late in the second period and Tyler Seguin scored twice in the third period as the Stars beat the Nashville Predators 5-1 on Thursday night.

Jamie Benn and Patrick Eaves also scored for the Stars, who moved one point ahead of the East-leading Washington Capitals in the overall standings. Dallas and Washington, which lost on Thursday night, share the league-lead with 28 wins.

Only the Stars, who lost on Tuesday night at Columbus, and the Capitals haven’t lost consecutive games this season.

Janmark said his play in December wasn’t much different from the first two months of the season despite the statistical difference.

”I just couldn’t get the puck in the net,” he said. ”So, it’s nice to get the goals in. If you don’t get it, you start doubting yourself.”

Dallas coach Lindy Ruff agreed with his rookie’s self-assessment.

”Sometimes, you’re in the right place and the goaltender’s making a great save on you,” Ruff said. ”His game for me has been very consistent.”

Janmark’s goal came at 17:28 of the second period. The play began with Jason Spezza beating Nashville’s Mike Ribeiro to the puck near the Predators’ blue line. Spezza skated in on the net and passed across to Janmark, who took the puck off his skate and shot over Pekka Rinne into the net’s roof.

Craig Smith scored his ninth goal of the season for the Predators in the second period, giving Nashville a lead that lasted about a minute and a half. Smith and Predators coach Peter Laviolette bemoaned Nashville’s puck management in neutral ice, particularly when the score was close.

”It’s the one thing that we harped,” Laviolette said. ”The neutral zone was going to be a big thing, and we turned the puck over too much.”

On Benn’s goal, he skated in slowly to the right of Rinne with defenseman Ryan Ellis situated between Benn and the net. Ellis dropped to the ice to prevent Benn from passing to Seguin in front of the crease. Benn instead wristed a shot over Ellis and past Rinne’s stick side at 12:53 of the second period.

Seguin’s goals came at 8:03 and 15:56 of the final period. The first was awarded following a video replay.

”I told Pekka right away, `I’m pretty sure that’s in,’ ” Seguin said. ”He said, `No chance.’ But once I saw the replay – actually, I heard the crowd – I knew it was in.”

Smith had given the Predators a 1-0 lead at 11:22 of the period with a backhander that beat Antti Niemi to his stick side.

Rinne, the NHL leader in goaltender minutes, hasn’t won on the road since Nov. 5. He’s 0-6-2 in away games since then.

The Predators are back in action on Saturday night when they travel to Carolina to take on the Hurricanes.  Thunder Radio will bring you the broadcast of the game immediately following Coffee County’s basketball game at Grundy County.

2015 Year in Review – Coffee County Central High School Sports

CC2015 may be best remembered as the year of change on Red Raider Drive.  Dismissals of the boys’ basketball coach and head baseball coach soiled the headlines in a tumultuous February.  The retirement of long time softball coach Terry Floyd brought sadness to the community in the early summer.  The “promotion of the Red Raider football team to the new “Super 32” Class 6A filled the hearts of many with a foreboding fear.  And the resignation of the athletic director, along with the restructuring of the athletic administration structure had the potential to quell the momentum gained by the department in the previous 2 years.   Resilient as they are, the athletes and staff survived the storms and entered this school year ready to tackle the challenges, as they fed off the successes of the past while continuing a growth started in 2014.  As 2015 winds down, let us celebrate the accomplishments of ALL the sports and athletes at CHS that represented their school and community with honor.

The Red Raider soccer team used a challenging schedule of “friendlies” to prepare themselves for the postseason and the plan worked nearly to perfection.  The Raiders won 6 out of 7 games during a late season stretch, including a Coffee Cup win over Tullahoma, to advance to the finals of District 8 tournament.  Coffee County finished as runner-up in District 8 and pushed unbeaten Oakland to overtime before being eliminated in the Region semifinals by a score of 2 to 1.

The Lady Raider soccer team also enjoyed a late season surge as they made it to the district semifinals to earn a 3rd place district finish.  The Lady Raiders fell to a talented Lincoln County team who went on to advance to the state tournament.

Coffee PotThe Red Raider football team also advanced to the state playoffs losing in the 1st round to Science Hill.  The Raiders season was highlighted by the recapture of the cherished Coffee Pot with a 42 to 7 massacre of Tullahoma along with a 46 to 7 drubbing of Warren County on Homecoming.  While not getting a win over the highly vaunted “Rutherford County teams,” Coffee County nearly upset Riverdale while playing exceptionally well against state quarterfinalists Smyrna and Blackman.

The PatchWhile both of the CHS basketball teams had early exits from the district tournament last winter, each has had strong starts to this season.  Coach Herb Horton has his young Lady Raider squad playing with passion and intensity.  First year Red Raider coach Micah Williams takes a 500 record into 2016 as he continues to mold his team into his style.  Look for a bright future at the Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gym in the coming years.

The CHS Wrestling team failed to qualify a wrestler for the state tournament last winter, but Coach Roger Barlow has his young squad working hard in their new home this season.  The Red Raiders have christened their new home at the Coffee County Raider Academy the “Meat Grinder” and look forward to establishing a foundation for future success in wrestling for Coffee County.

The Red Raider baseball team would just as soon forget the many obstacles that they faced at the beginning of the season.  The 9 person senior class and interim head coach Jon Spears battled their way into the district tournament where they clawed their way to a 5th place finish.  New head coach David Martin was hired in late May and helped oversee a summer of competition that promises a return to glory on the diamond at Powers Field.

2015 Year in Review – Westwood Middle School Sports

Westwood helmetAs 2015 draws to a close, it is time to look back at the highlights from our local prep teams in the past 12 months.  We began our review on Wednesday with a look at Coffee County Middle School.  Today we will visit the highlights of the year from Westwood Middle School and on Friday, we look back at 2015 sports at Coffee County CHS.

2015 at Westwood ended much like it started, on the basketball court; only with dramatically different results.  In January, the Rockets and Lady Rockets were eliminated in the 2nd round of the Duck River Valley conference as each finished with sub 500 records.  The lessons learned from those young teams provided an excellent springboard to this past season.  The Lady Rockets claimed the regular season conference title earlier this month and saw their season end with a record of 19 and 3 in the finals of the Duck River Valley Conference tournament.  The Rockets finished 2015 with a 5th place finish in the conference tournament and a 500 record in a season that saw them defeat all but 1 of the teams in the conference.  Perhaps the most impressive win of the year came against eventual conference champion Forrest on November 11th as the Rockets spanked Forrest 45 to 33 in a game on their home floor in Chapel Hill.  Both Westwood 6th grade basketball teams finished with records of 4 and 2 against teams from the bigger Central Tennessee Conference.

In the spring, the Westwood Rockets claimed the conference title in the Central Tennessee Soccer Conference as the Rockets finished with an 11 and 2 record and were unbeaten in conference play.  After a 1 to 0 nail-biter over Fayetteville City in the conference semi’s, the Rockets throttled Cascade 4 to 1 in the finals on April 25th.  Also in the spring, Westwood began play in tennis as the Rockets and Lady Rockets fielded brand new teams.  The young teams showed improvement throughout their season as they look ahead to 2016 with new coach Melissa Askins.  The baseball and softball teams saw youth, inexperience and injuries combine to leave them out of the hunt for conference titles.  The Westwood golf team saw a drop in numbers keep them out of the hunt for a conference title as well, but Coach Doug Roorda will welcome back several golfers who gained experience last season.

In the fall, the Lady Rocket soccer team claimed the regular season title of the Central Tennessee Soccer Conference before getting stunned in the tournament semifinals by Community 3 to 2.  The Lady Rockets finished the year with a record of 6-1-1 as they outscored their competition 34 to 8 on the season.  The cross county Rockets and Lady Rockets had another great season as they won a pair of meets each.  Coach Jim Dobson has had amazing success with his 2nd year program and looks forward to more great finishes in 2016.  After opening the season with an impressive 14 to 0 defeat of Moore County, the Westwood Rocket football team struggled at times this season as heavy graduation loses hurt the Rockets in the trenches.  Look for Westwood’s football fortunes to improve in 2016 as Coach Chad Dyer always finds a way to handle the yearly task of rebuilding at the middle school level.

2016 promises to be another great year for Westwood Middle School sports and Thunder Radio will keep you updated with all the great performances daily.  We will continue our look back the highlights of 2015 on Friday as we check out the year in sports at Coffee County Central High School.
