VOLLEYBALL: Opening serve for Westwood is Tuesday in Manchester

Westwood Lady Rocket volleyball will open their season at home on Tuesday, Aug. 3 when they welcome Columbia Academy to Joel Vinson Gymnasium in Manchester.

The Lady Rockets have a busy week. After Tuesday’s match, WMS will hit the road to take on Forrest on Wednesday before returning home to host Community at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (Capstar Bank Hometown Sports Series broadcast on Thunder Radio). Westwood will then participate in the CHS volleyball playday on Saturday.

Braves continue maddening trend of alternating wins and losses

Charlie Morton delivered another strong start, but he didn’t receive enough support from his bolstered lineup as the Braves suffered a 2-1 loss to the Brewers on Sunday afternoon at Truist Park.

Willy Adames’ first-inning solo homer and Jackie Bradley Jr.’s RBI groundout in the fifth sunk Morton, who surrendered just three hits over six innings. The veteran right-hander’s effort wasn’t enough to prevent the Braves from setting an MLB record by alternating wins and losses over 16 consecutive games.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Atlanta had previously stood with the 1974 Phillies, 1981 Dodgers and 2010 Rockies as the only clubs to extend such a streak of 15 straight games.

Austin Riley’s RBI single in the sixth accounted for the only run charged to Brewers starter Brett Anderson over 5 2/3 innings. After surrendering Riley’s single, John Curtiss had to face Dansby Swanson, who had hit a grand slam off the Brewers’ new reliever on Saturday. But Curtiss won this latest showdown, when Swanson’s 99.8 mph liner found Bradley Jr.’s glove at the right-field warning track.

FOOTBALL: Raiders find plenty of positives from first scrimmage

The offensive line opened gaping holes, the running backs made people miss and quarterbacks didn’t make mistakes.

The Coffee County Red Raiders had plenty of positives to take away from their first scrimmage of fall camp at Lincoln County Friday night.

“[The offensive line] established themselves early,” explained CHS head coach Doug Greene, who is entering his third season at the helm of the Red Raider program. “We won the line of scrimmage from the very first drive. We were able to run counter, power, our zone plays really well. The times we got stopped, the backs didn’t follow their puller. Pass protections was really good. (Offensive line) Coach [Roger] Barlow has done a great job with them and that is part of our identity I think. “

Full comments from CHS head coach Doug Greene following Friday’s (July 30) scrimmage.

Score wasn’t an issue as the scrimmage was not played as a straight game. Each team spent a certain number of plays with the ball and only worked on the plus side of midfield. Special teams were worked to open the scrimmage but not throughout.

On offense, Konor Heaton made a habit of making defenders miss and Tristan Galey was able to gallop into the end zone a few times from short distance. Quarterback Nate Luttrell connected with Kelby Walker on a short 5-yard touchdown on the Raiders’ first possession of the night. Luttrell split reps at quarterback with freshman Cole Pippenger. Senior quarterback Connor Shemwell is still not cleared to return from a torn ACL he suffered in basketball.

Neither team turned the ball over over the course of the 60-minute timed scrimmage.

The Raiders have a few more weeks of practice before opening the season on Friday, Aug. 20 at Franklin County High School.

Braves take 5-game series with Mets

After his team sealed a key series victory with a 6-3 win over the Mets on Thursday afternoon at Citi Field, Braves manager Brian Snitker had a straightforward response when asked what he hopes might happen before Friday’s 4 p.m. ET Trade Deadline.

THUNDER RADIO IS COFFEE COUNTY’S EXCLUSIVE HOME FOR ATLANTA BRAVES BASEBALL. LISTEN AT 107.9 FM, 1320 AM, 106.7 FM.

“I don’t waste time on that,” Snitker said. “If it happens, it does. If it doesn’t, we’re going to keep fighting like we have been.”

After Austin Riley’s latest homer and a strong showing from the bullpen, the Braves claimed their third win in this five-game series and exited New York four games behind the first-place Mets in the National League East.

“We had a chance to win all five,” Braves starter Drew Smyly said. “We were right there in every single game. It’s a big series for us. It was nice to get away with a win.”

The Braves have alternated a win and a loss through each of their first 14 games played since the All-Star break. Consequently, they haven’t had a .500 record since July 10, and they’re still in search of their first winning record of the season.

GOLF: Lady Raiders take 3rd at Tullahoma Invitational

Coffee County Central’s golfers had mixed results in the season opening match Thursday at Lakewood Country Club in Tullahoma.

The Lady Raider golf team placed 3rd out of 5 teams, while the Raiders finished 7th out of 7 to open the year.

The Lady Raider team of Maggie Crouch and Araya Hughes combined for a 201. Crouch led the way with a 98.

Meanwhile, Logan Hale carded an 89 to lead the Raider boys effort, followed by a 99 from Zach Tidwell. Beau Murray and Brady Daugherty each put together a 108 to round out the scoring.

CHS golfers will have their first home match Aug. 2 when they host Shelbyville, Marshall County and Tullahoma.

Coffee County Raider, Lady Raider basketball releases 2021-22 schedule

Coffee County Central High School’s Red Raider and Lady Raider basketball teams have released their schedule for the 2021-22 winter season.

The season tips off Nov. 19 with Hall of Fame games against opponents that are to be determined.

Coffee County will open with 5 consecutive home games (minus a Cannon County Thanksgiving tournament sandwiched in the middle for the boys). The Lady Raiders will be traveling to Panama City Beach, Florida for a Christmas tournament before both teams open district play in January in Shelbyville.

Other schedule highlights: Tullahoma remains on the schedule, now as a non-district opponent in a home-and-away series; both teams close the season with 3 consecutive away games.

The Lady Raiders are coming off a 28-win season that included their fourth consecutive district championship. Meanwhile, the Red Raider boys advanced to the Region 4-AAA semi-finals last year and will be under the direction of a new coach as Andrew Taylor takes over for Micah Williams.

Thunder Radio is your home for the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders all winter long. Listen at 107.9 FM, 1320 AM, 106.7 FM on the Manchester Go app and thunder1320.com. Coffee County basketball on Thunder Radio is driven by Al White Ford-Lincoln.

Titans Training Camp Preview: Special Teams

The Tennessee Titans open training camp on Wednesday. Preview continues today with special teams with Titans writer Jim Wyatt.

The Tennessee Titans can be heard all season long on Thunder Radio – your exclusive home for the Titans in Coffee County, presented by realtor Charlie Gonzales with Weichert Realtors Joe Orr & Associates (107.9 FM, 1320 AM, 106.7 FM).

In camp: P Brett Kern, P James Smith, K Tucker McCann, K Blake Haubeil, LS Morgan Cox, Returners Darrynton Evans, Cameron Batson, Chester Rogers, Josh Reynolds, Brian Hill, Mason Kinsey and others.

Offseason developments: The Titans signed Cox, a four-time Pro Bowler with the Ravens, early in free agency. The Titans also added Smith and Haubeil as undrafted free agents following the NFL Draft, and both kicked during offseason work. Stephen Gostkowski, who kicked for the team last season, saw his contract expire, and he remains a free agent. Kalif Raymond, who handled punt and kick returns for the Titans last season, was not re-signed, and he ended up signing with the Lions. The Titans added a number of new players who should compete on special teams in the offseason, from draft picks to free agents. Meanwhile, the team’s top three special teams tacklers a year ago – Nick Dzubnar, Daren Bates and Joshua Kalu – were not re-signed.

In the spotlight: Kern. While there are plenty of questions heading into the season – Who will be the team’s kicker? Who will handle returns? – one thing remains a constant, and that one thing is punter Brett Kern. A three-time Pro Bowler, Kern averaged 45.8 yards a punt, with a 41.4-yard net, in 2020, when he put 22 punts down inside the 20, and had only three touchbacks. Kern continues to work on his craft to improve, and his consistency is a blessing for the coaching staff. The biggest question surrounding Kern heading into the season is: Who will he be holding for on field goals this fall?

Battle to watch: Kicker. At this point, the Titans have a pair of kickers who’ve never kicked in an NFL game on the roster in Haubeil and McCann. Haubeil kicked in 50 games at Ohio State, and he was 28 of 35 on field goal attempts with a long of 55. He did not miss an extra point, converting on 146 of 146 for his career. McCann, who spent last season on the team’s practice squad before landing on IR, was signed by the Titans as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL Draft. McCann was 16-for-22 on field goals (with a long of 52) and 34-for-37 on extra points at Missouri in 2019. McCann posted 82 points during his senior season (16 field goals, 24 extra points) and finished his career with 358 points, just four shy of the all-time Mizzou scoring record (362 by Jeff Wolfert from 2006-08). The Titans will give these two kickers a chance to win the job in camp. If neither kicker is convincing, the team will look at other options.

Keep an eye on: The returners. The Titans will sort through their options in the return game during camp. So much, of course, depends on how position battles are going in determining who will be on the final roster, and really in contention. Running back Darrynton Evans returned nine kickoffs last year, and he’ll be in the mix there in camp. So will receiver Cameron Batson, who returned 11 kickoffs. Batson also figures to be among those who will compete at punt returner. So, who else might be involved? Chester Rogers and Mason Kinsey could enter the competition, and running back Brian Hill has at least some experience returning kicks. Receiver Josh Reynolds could also be an intriguing option at punt returner as well.

Braves continue maddening trend, fall to Mets

At some point, the Braves will once again win or lose games in consecutive fashion. But until they do, there will continue to be skepticism about their bid to win a fourth straight division title.

Want to hear the Braves? Catch them all season long on Thunder Radio -your exclusive home for Braves baseball in Coffee County.

Max Fried surrendered a decisive seventh-inning homer and received little support from a maddening offense as the Braves suffered a 2-1 loss to the Mets on Wednesday night at Citi Field.

“That was like a playoff game,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “Max threw great. God, he threw the ball well.”

Yeah, Fried was impressive and a bang-bang play at the plate allowed the Mets to keep a lead in the ninth. But the Braves’ current trend certainly isn’t carrying them toward the postseason excitement they’ve enjoyed each of the past three years.

The Braves have alternated a win and a loss over each of the first 13 games they have played since the All-Star break. By splitting the first four games of this five-game series, they remain five games behind the first-place Mets in the National League East.
