Josi Scores in Overtime to Lift Preds

Pete Weber’s Postgame Report

Roman Josi

Roman Josi

The Nashville Predators rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period, then gave their fans a rare overtime win.

Defenseman Roman Josi potted the skate-off goal at 20 seconds of overtime, enabling Nashville to dump the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 at Bridgestone Arena.

Josi skated around a defender and beat goalie Mike Smith with a forehand from point-blank range for his 14th goal and 61st point, adding to his franchise record for most points by a defenseman in a single season. It improved the Predators to 2-12 in games decided in overtime.

It was the second straight win for the Predators (41-26-14), which are locked into the first wild-card spot in the Western Conference and will play the Pacific Division winner — either Anaheim or Los Angeles — in the first round next week.

Nashville forced overtime when left winger Filip Forsberg deflected a wrister from defenseman Roman Josi at 19:41 of the third period for his 33rd goal, tying the team’s single-season record previously set by Jason Arnott.

The Coyotes (35-38-8) scored on their first shot on net at 6:26 of the first period, center Antoine Vermette redirecting a slapper from defenseman Zbynek Michalek past goalie Pekka Rinne for his 17th marker of the season.

Right winger Shane Doan made it 2-0 at 9:42 of the second period with a classic one-timer from the left faceoff dot off a nice cross-ice pass from right winger Brad Richardson. It was Doan’s 28th goal of the season and the 396th of his career.

Defenseman Shea Weber put the Predators on the board with his 20th goal at 7:26 of the third period on a one-timer from the left faceoff circle, 13 seconds into a power play. With defenseman Connor Murphy off for elbowing, Craig Smith fed Weber for his 14th man-advantage marker, tying a franchise record.

Rinne made 16 saves for the Predators, which are locked into the Western Conference’s first wild-card slot. Arizona goalie Mike Smith came up with 28 saves on 31 shots, including two on Forsberg on a breakaway late in the second period.

The Predators end the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Dallas to take on the Stars.  Puck drop is set for 7 PM and Thunder Radio will bring you coverage of the action on the Fifth Third Bank/Nashville Predators Radio Network

Nashville Sounds Blanked in Home Opener By Oklahoma Dodgers

Sounds3The Oklahoma City Dodgers spoiled Opening Day in Nashville with a 5-0 shutout win over the Sounds on Thursday night at First Tennessee Park.
Rain, and early Oklahoma City scoring, put a damper on the evening. The game was delayed 45 minutes to start when heavy rain began to fall just minutes before the scheduled first pitch of 6:35 p.m.
When play began, the Dodgers (1-0) didn’t waste any time getting in front. Micah Johnson started the game with a bloop single to left and moved to second on a stolen base.
Two batters later, Dodgers third baseman Rob Segedin launched a two-run home run to left field to give Oklahoma City an early 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Sounds (0-1) starter Chris Smith issued three walks and another base hit to lead to another pair of runs. In five innings of work, Smith allowed four runs on four hits to go along with three walks and six strikeouts.
Nashville wasn’t able to muster any offense against Oklahoma City pitching. Starter Zach Lee fired six shutout innings on just 63 pitches. He turned it over to Lisalverto Bonilla who worked a scoreless seventh. Relievers Adam Liberatore and Chin-hui Tsao followed suit with scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
Three of Nashville’s four hits were followed by double plays. Chad Pinder led off the fifth with a base hit to left before Rangel Ravelo grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.
Renato Nunez opened the sixth with a line drive off Lee’s foot that went for a single, but was quickly erased when Bruce Maxwell hit into a 4-6-3 twin killing.
With one away in the bottom of the ninth, Joey Wendle singled to left field but Jake Smolinski bounced into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Friday night. Right-hander Jesse Hahn starts for the Sounds against right-hander Jharel Cotton for the Dodgers. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
The 2016 season is the Sounds’ 19th year in the Pacific Coast League and their second as the Oakland Athletics’ top affiliate. Season ticket memberships are available now by calling (615) 690-4487 or by visiting www.nashvillesounds.com.

Braves Derailed in Norris’ Impressive Debut

Braves5Wilson Ramos’ two-out chopper led to a couple of defensive mistakes that spoiled Bud Norris’ otherwise impressive Braves debut and enabled the Nationals to complete a two-game season-opening sweep with a 3-1 win on Wednesday night at Turner Field.

Matt den Dekker capped Washington’s three-run seventh with a two-run double, but he would not have had the pinch-hit opportunity had the Braves not added to the defensive mistakes that cost them on Opening Day. Shortstop Erick Aybar grabbed Ramos’ chopper and made an off-balance and off-target throw to Freddie Freeman, who then saw his relay throw to prevent Ryan Zimmerman from scoring from second base elude catcher A.J. Pierzynski’s glove.
While Pierzynski’s fourth-inning single accounted for the only costly damage Stephen Strasburg sustained over six innings, Norris had allowed just one Nationals baserunner to reach second base before the seventh frame.
“[Norris] pitched tremendous,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “We didn’t make a play there, and they scored three runs. They should be all unearned runs, for me.”
Given that Norris posted a 6.79 ERA in the 11 starts he made before being released by the Orioles last year, the Braves took a gamble when they signed him to a one-year, $2.5 million deal in December. But the right-hander made a good first impression as he limited the Nationals to four hits before his defense squandered the effort and a 1-0 lead.
In his first start of the season, Strasburg pitched six innings, allowed one run on six hits and struck out four batters. He also put himself in the record books by becoming the all-time club leader in strikeouts with 905. Strasburg struck out Norris in the third inning to break the record set by Jordan Zimmermann.

Matt Wisler will make his season debut when Atlanta begins a three-game series against the Cardinals on Friday at 6:35 p.m. CT. Wisler refined his changeup with Hall of Famer Tom Glavine’s assistance this past winter and impressed Atlanta’s coaches with the enhanced mound presence he showed during Spring Training.  Thunder Radio will bring you the broadcast of that game beginning at 6:20 on the Atlanta Braves Radio Network.
