Braves blast 3 HR to sweep Nationals
As the Braves sit atop the National League East standings with a lineup that includes an abundance of power, it’s remarkable to consider how much has changed for them since the All-Star break. Many of the concerns that surrounded this team for much of the season’s first four months have steadily evaporated over the past few weeks.
Dansby Swanson extended his recent power barrage and Freddie Freeman teamed with Austin Riley to hit back-to-back homers in a 6-5 win over the Nationals on Sunday afternoon at Nationals Park. The victory sealed a three-game sweep for the Braves, who have won 10 of their past 12 games.
Though Atlanta enhanced its power supply by acquiring Adam Duvall, Joc Pederson and Jorge Soler over July’s final two weeks, it’s evident the club’s internal power sources remained quite strong even after Ronald Acuña Jr. suffered a season-ending knee injury on July 10. Freeman and Riley reached the 25-homer mark in this series finale and Swanson was one shy of this mark after tallying his fourth homer of this series.
After Drew Smyly allowed three runs over four innings, the Braves leaned on their bullpen and preserved the lead gained with their three-run fifth, which was capped by Swanson scoring on a wild pitch. The inning began with Freeman and Riley hitting consecutive homers against Paolo Espino. This marked the fourth time Atlanta hit back-to-back homers this year, but just the first time since May.
Thunder Radio is your exclusive home for the Atlanta Braves in Coffee County – 107.9 FM, 1320 AM, 106.7 FM.
FOOTBALL: Rockets drop second game by touchdown
Westwood’s Rocket football team is so close to being 2-0 on the young season.
Unfortunately, close doesn’t count in the win column.
Westwood went on the road Thursday and gave Fayetteville City all it wanted but came up just short, losing 20-14.
The Rockets twice had opportunities in the fourth quarter and trailing by six points. The Rockets had a reverse pass from Matthew White to Kaysen Lowery go for 40 yards and get the Rockets inside the 10-yard line but it was called back due to a penalty.
With about a minute to play the Rockets fell on a Fayetteville City fumble while they were trying to ice the clock. But Fayetteville City intercepted a pass to ice the game.
Both teams exchanged scores early. Fayetteville took a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter on a 9-yard touchdown run from Fernando Leslie. The Rockets answered behind a 23-yard Lowery to White connection followed by a 40-yard touchdown run from Isaiah Deadman with 7:49 left in the first half.
Fayetteville City scored late in the first half but the Rockets answered with the opening drive of the second half. The Rockets used a 20-yard Barrera run to set up a 26-yard air strike from Lowery to White, who connected again on the two-point conversion to tie the game at 14 apiece.
Fayetteville City regained the lead on a 15-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
Deadman led Westwood on the ground with 39 yards and a score on 8 carries. Lowery was 5-of-10 for 91 yards and a TD through the air. White had all five of those receptions.
Fayetteville City was led by Keenan Hockett who piled up 170 yards on 19 touches and a TD.

BASKETBALL: Elli Chumley commits to Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions
We are still three months from the tip-off of high school basketball and senior Elli Chumley has already made her decision on where she plans to play at the collegiate level.
Chumley, an integral part of the Coffee County Central Lady Raider basketball program’s success over the past two seasons, has made a verbal commitment to play for the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions at the conclusion of her high school career.
“It is such a blessing and a relief to get this out of the way [before my senior season],” Chumley told Thunder Radio Thursday. “A huge thank you to my parents and just all the coaches I’ve had along the way: coach (Joe Pat) Cope, Matt (Vinson), my dad (Rece Chumley), Amanda (Ruehling), Anita (Gannon) and my AAU coach Jerome Hoosier.
“And I really want to thank the entire Coffee County community. The support here is just amazing and I want to thank everyone here for their support.”
Chumley’s defensive prowess and masterful rebounding make her valuable to whatever team she is playing for. Last season for the Lady Raiders, Chumley averaged 8 points, 3 assists and 9 rebounds per game. She was a 68 percent free throw shooter. She tallied over 200 points and 200 rebounds for Coffee County.
Despite a few options, Chumley said she was able to zero in on Freed-Hardeman for a few reasons – the main one being religion.
“It was not an easy decision at first,” explained Chumley. “The main thing was how they are religiously there. That is just what I am more comfortable with and what I’ve grown up with and I think I would be more comfortable there religiously.
“And they really made me feel at home (at Freed-Hardeman),” Chumley added. “And not just the basketball team but everybody i came into contact with: admissions and people I met along the way were just so genuine and so nice it made me feel really welcome.”
Chumley plans to major in Biology. She is the daughter of Rece and Allison Chumley.

FOOTBALL: Raiders finish preseason with strong showing over Tyner

The Central High School Red Raider football team now turns its attention to Franklin County.
The Raiders wrapped up the preseason schedule with a home scrimmage against Tyner Tuesday night at Carden-Jarrell Field. CHS ended the night ahead 35-14 on the scoreboard. The game was tied 14-14 at the half with both teams playing mostly second and third teamers for the final two quarters.
The Raiders led early on a tough, short touchdown run from junior tailback Konor Heaton – who also bulled his way into the end zone midway through the second quarter to finish with a pair of touchdowns in the first half.
Coffee County had a shot at a 35-yard field goal to end the first half with the lead after a forced fumble and recovery by Derrick Scott in the backfield. But Ian Welden’s attempt was blocked. Welden was 2-for-2 on extra points.
After the blocked field goal, Scott pressured the Tyner quarterback into throwing an interception to Raider linebacker Brendan Sheppard to close the half.
Coffee Count’s depth flexed on Tyner in the second half. Tristin Galy rumbled in from 5 yards out and Kendall James got in on the action with a touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Freshman Jayden Carter got in on the action to close the scoring, rumbling 25-yard and running over multiple Rams on his way into the end zone.
Sophomore Elijah McCoy was 3-for-3 in extra points in the second half.
The Raiders now turn their attention to the season opener – August 20th at Franklin County. The Raiders’ first home game will be Aug. 27 when Tullahoma comes to town.

FOOTBALL: Coffee Middle opens season with blowout road win over West Wilson

Coffee County Middle School’s Red Raider football team went on the road and took care of business Tuesday night in the season opener.
Red Raider quarterback Caiden Martin accounted for five touchdowns and the Raiders cruised to a 35-7 win over West Wilson.
It was a big night for Martin, who put the Raiders up 7-0 early in the first quarter when he broke loose for a 70-yard touchdown gallop. Martin also kicked the extra point.
Martin was able to get outside with 2:39 to play in the first half and sprint 38 yards for another Raider score. After a botched extra point snap, Martin was able to pick up the ball and find Layton Yancer for a 2-point conversion to put the Raiders up 15-0 at the half.
The Raider defense was phenomenal in the first half, as well. Caleb Dodson killed a West Wilson drive with an interception with 25 seconds left in the first half and the defense put up a goal-line stand when West Wilson got to the 1 yard line in the first quarter, forcing a turnover on downs.
Martin added three more touchdowns in the second half – the first with 1:15 remaining in the third quarter when he was able to find room up the middle for a 54-yard score. Martin snuck in a score early in the fourth quarter and then was able to rumble in for another touchdown with 38 seconds left on the clock.
The Raiders return to the field Aug. 17, traveling to Tullahoma or a 6:30 p.m. kickoff. That game will be broadcast live on Thunder Radio as part of the Capstar Bank Hometown Sports Series.
