CMS football won’t resume practice until Aug. 26

Coffee County Middle School’s football team will continue to cease activities through August 25, with practice resuming Aug. 26 due to a COVID-19 issue.

The Raiders had to stop activities prior to this week’s schedule game against Tullahoma and that will now continue into next week. The Tullahoma game has been rescheduled for Sept. 4. Meanwhile, the Aug. 24 game against Harris has been cancelled and no make up date has been scheduled.

Large video screen coming to Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gymnasium

Coffee County Central’s Lady Raiders and Red Raiders basketball teams and the Lady Raider volleyball team are going to have a nice addition to Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gymnasium this winter.

The CHS basketball teams and volleyball team hosted area business leaders for a luncheon Thursday and were able to garner $90,000 worth of donations to foot the bill for a massive digital screen that will be installed in the gymnasium before the upcoming basketball season, which tips off in November.

The video board will take up a large chunk of wall above the baseline at the main entrance doors. It will measure approximately 16×10 feet and comes with a multitude of bells and whistles, including:

  • HD video display operator control system, which includes preloaded software and professionally designed content library
  • Designer templates and guides for creating customized videos, graphics and presentation materials
  • 1920 x 1080 High Definition video camcorder for live event coverage and use with fan interaction overlays at each event
  • System includes streaming and recording event capability
  • System capable of live interaction mode or message/advertising only mode

While the basketball and volleyball teams are raising the money for the board, it will be used for other school events such as assemblies, pep rallies, indoor graduations when necessary and other events as necessary.

The three teams will use the board for fundraising and split revenues.

Westwood’s Lady Rockets opened the season and flexed on visiting Liberty Tuesday afternoon, running away with a 4-1 win at Dyer-Bouldin Field in Manchester.

Westwood picked up a pair of goals from striker Jenny Sanchez and added single goals from Bailey Barsenas and Carmen Barret.

Westwood finished with 13 shots on goal on the Lady Patriots.

The Lady Rockets will host St. Andrews at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19. That match will be broadcast live on the Ben Lomand Connect stream at thunder1320.com, with Elizabeth Brown on the call.

VOLLEYBALL: Coffee Middle falls to Warren County 2-1

It was a good start for the Coffee Middle School Lady Raider volleyball team Tuesday in McMinnville.

But things went terribly wrong after the first game.

The Lady Raiders went to Warren County Middle School and took game one 25-21, but let a late lead slip and lost game two 25-20 and game three 15-6 in a 2-1 match loss to the Lady Pioneers.

THIS VOLLEYBALL MATCH WAS BROADCAST LIVE ON THUNDER RADIO AS PART OF THE CAPSTAR BANK HOMETOWN SPORTS SERIES. HEAR THE REPLAY HERE.

CMS fell behind 19-13 in game one, but Carrington Saner went on an impressive run at the service line to put CMS up 20-19. Danni Hillis closed the game with impressive serving herself.

CMS went on to take a 5-1 lead in game 2 and led 19-18. But Coffee County struggled to string points together again and fell behind Warren County 5-1 in game 3 and lost 15-6, dropping the match 2-1.

The loss drops CMS to 2-2 overall on the season. The Lady Raiders will host North on Thursday. That game will be broadcast live on the Capstar Bank Online stream at thunder1320.com.

VOLLEYBALL: Lady Raiders swept by Cookeville in season opener

Coffee County’s Lady Raider volleyball program opened the new season with the same opponent that ended the Lady Raider season in the state sectional a year ago.

CHS welcomed volleyball powerhouse Cookeville to Manchester Monday, Aug. 16, falling 0-3 in a best-of-five match.

The Lady Raiders led Cookeville 20-17 in game one and was tied 22-22. But the Lady Cavs went on a run to take the first game 25-22 and never looked back. Cookeville cruised to a 25-14 win in game two and a 25-20 win in game three.

THIS GAME WAS BROADCAST LIVE ON THUNDER RADIO AS PART OF THE CAPSTAR BANK HOMETOWN SPORTS SERIES. LISTEN TO THE REPLAY BY CLICKING HERE.

The Lady Raiders were at times riddled by service errors and Cookeville seemed to take advantage of the smallest mistake – standard for a Lady Cavalier program that has been to the state tournament in two of the past three seasons. The Lady Raiders finished with 14 services errors.

Senior Kiya Ferrell led CHS in kills with 13 and Lauren Brandt had 19 assists. Service aces were few and far between thanks to Cookeville’s solid passing game, but Maddy Sussen did manage 2 aces.

The Lady Raiders will return to the court Thursday when Rockvale comes to Manchester for a 6:30 p.m. first serve. That match will be broadcast live on Thunder Radio as part of the Capstar Bank Hometown Sports Series.

CMS football halts operations due to COVID cases; Tullahoma game postponed

Thunder Radio sports has learned Coffee County Middle School’s football team has suspended practices and games until Wednesday, Aug. 18, due to COVID-19 cases related to the football team.

School administration will “re-evaluate” the situation on Aug. 18.

The Raiders (1-0) opened the season with a win over West Wilson on Aug. 10 and were scheduled to travel to Tullahoma to play for the “Coffee Cup” on Tuesday, Aug. 17. That game has been postponed and rescheduled for Sept. 4.

Titans set tone, roll to win over Falcons to open preseason

The offense produced plenty of points, the defense swarmed and made plays, and the special teams unit made a big impact.

Sure, many of the Titans starters didn’t play, and some didn’t even make the trip to Atlanta for the team’s preseason opener last night against the Falcons.

But the overall performance was still good from start to finish, as the Titans rolled to a 23-3 win over the Falcons.

“We’re never going to underestimate winning at anything,” Titans coach Mike Vrabel said. “We’re going to want to compete with whoever is in there.”

The Titans competed well on Friday night.

Logan Woodside started at quarterback for the Titans, as Ryan Tannehill remained in Nashville with running back Derrick Henry and a pretty big number of starters. Some of the front-liners who did make the trip and suited up didn’t play long.

There were plenty of positive signs from the Titans who did play, however, as they set the tone and took control of the game early at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Return man Chester Rogers provided a big play – while helping his case for a roster spot – with a 56-yard punt return late in the first quarter.

“That was a fun play,” Rogers said. “It was good to get out there, and get the jitters out of the way. And it was good to get out there and show the team the type of play I am capable of.”
