CHS Basketball Splits with Columbia on Monday

Jenna Garretson of Lady Raider basketball

The Coffee County CHS basketball teams welcomed Columbia to the Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gym on Monday for a Martin Luther King, Jr holiday matinee.  A small but electric crowd was entertained by a pair of good performances by the Raiders and Lady Raiders in the varsity doubleheader that got underway at 4.  The Lady Raiders blasted the Lady Lions 63 to 36 while the Red Raiders dropped a 37 to 35 decision.

The Lady Raiders roared out to a 20 point lead after the first quarter as they led the entire game.  The Coffee County defense forced more than 20 turnovers as they held Columbia to single digits in each quarter.  Additionally, the Lady Raiders committed only 8 fouls on the night.   The win improves the Lady Raiders record to 13 and 4 overall and 3 and 2 in district play.

Abby Morgan led the Lady Raiders in scoring with 13 points.  Jacey Vaughn added 8 points while Jenna Garretson finished with 7 points.  Ashley Starks came off the bench and was 6 for 8 at the free throw line in the 2nd half to be named the Crazy Daisies player of the game.

Garrett Eldridge of Red Raider basketball

In the tightest game they have played all year, the Red Raiders forced a turnover with less than 5 seconds remaining but could not get a game-winning shot to fall as time expired in the loss.  Neither team held a lead of more than 6 points on the night as the game was tied at the half and at the beginning of the 4th quarter.  Columbia scored the game winner with 51 seconds remaining before missed shots and turnovers hampered the opportunity to tie the game down the stretch.  Coffee County was 2 for 6 at the free throw line in the 4th quarter and committed 3 crucial turnovers in the loss.

Garrett Eldridge led the Red Raiders in scoring with 9 points as he was named the Crazy Daisies player of the game.  Stephen Sullivan added 7 points and Tyrese McGee finished with 6.  With the loss, Coffee County’s record drops to 16 and 4 overall and 3 and 2 in district play.

Coffee County is back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Tullahoma to take on the rival Wildcats.  The girls’ game is set to tip off at 6 PM and Thunder Radio will be there to bring you all the action.  Our live coverage begins at 5:50 with the Powers Storage Pregame Show.

TSSAA Votes to Renew Golf Championship Contract with Willowbrook

After tabling a vote on whether to return the TSSAA State Golf Championships to Willowbrook on November 17th; the TSSAA Board of Control voted to renew Willowbrook’s contract to host the state golf tournament through 2020.  The board was deadlocked on a decision in that November meeting and instructed the state office to poll golf coaches statewide for feedback as to whether to move the state tournament back to Old Fort Golf Course in Murfreesboro.  Willowbrook has hosted the event for the past 8 years after leaving Old Fort.  Willowbrook was approved by a vote of 8 to 4 by the Board of Control to retain the championships for another 4 years.

Willowbrook Golf pro, and Tullahoma golf coach, Barry Bishop was ecstatic in the board’s decision when contacted by Thunder Radio sports.  “We are very excited to be chosen to host the state championships for the next 4 years.  We are pleased with the work we have done to improve the course and to contribute to the community with am improved course and a positive economic impact.   We appreciate the local community support including countless volunteers which we feel helped make the decision easier to return to Willowbrook(for the TSSAA).   As a local high school coach, you are always excited for your golfers to be able to play and practice on the state championship course easily.”

Coffee County golf coach Mike Ray echoed those same sentiments.  “We are excited to have the state tournament back on our home course.  We also are glad to see the extra revenues for our city and county being able to host such an event. WIllowbrook does a great job of putting on the tournament; from the course itself, to the facilities, to the top flight restaurant at Boskeys.  I feel that the TSSAA appreciates the past success of having the state championships at WIllowbrook and our community.”

The state golf championships are held over a 3 week period in late September and early October each year.

Coffee County Basketball Splits with Huntland on Saturday Night

Facing a tough Saturday night non-district challenge, the Coffee County basketball teams welcomed Huntland to the Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gym. The visitors from Franklin County both came into the game much improved from the earlier season meeting in November as each owned a modest winning streak. The Lady Raiders dropped a 56 to 46 decision while the Red Raiders blasted the Hornets 64 to 40.
In the girls’ game; Coffee County shooting woes early on, coupled with a 15 point first quarter by Huntland’s Ali Golden, put the Lady Raiders in an 11 point hole after the first quarter. The Lady Raiders battled back to cut that lead to 5 in the 3rd quarter, only to see Huntland’s outside shooting push the deficit to 11 with 6 minutes remaining. From that point, Coffee County held Huntland scoreless for the next 5 minutes as they cut the deficit to 3 points with 61 seconds left in the game. Missed shots at the rim by Coffee County and made free throws by Huntland allowed the Lady Hornets to pull away in the final minute for the win.
The Lady Raiders were led in scoring by Abby Morgan who finished with 20 points as she was named the Crazy Daisies player of the game. Alliyah Williams finished with 9 points and Aerial Williams finished with 7 as the sister duo combined for 9 points in the 4th quarter.

In the boys’ game, Coffee County never trailed as they jumped out to a lead in the 1st quarter before outscoring Huntland 20 to 7 in the 2nd quarter to put the game out of reach. Twelve different Red Raiders scored as all the Coffee County starters were able to rest the entire 4th quarter in the dominating win. Even while playing every player on his roster Saturday night, Coach Micah Williams saw his Red Raiders outscore Huntland in every period to capture their 16th win on the year.

The Red Raiders were led in scoring by Stephen Sullivan who finished with 11 points earning the Crazy Daisies player of the game honor. Grant Sadler finished with 9 points while Garrett Eldridge, Darius Rozier and A.J. Rollman each added 7 points.
Coffee County is back in action on Monday afternoon when Columbia visits “The Patch” for a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday matinee. The JV games will begin at 1 PM with the girls’ varsity game set to tip off at 4:00 PM. As usual, Thunder Radio will bring you all the action. McLeod, Forsberg Guide Travel-Tested Preds to Win

Waking up around 5 a.m. CT to fly from Nashville to Denver wasn’t ideal, but the Predators still got the job done.

Nashville scored three unanswered goals and came back to beat the Colorado Avalanche by a 3-2 final at Pepsi Center on Saturday afternoon and earned their third consecutive victory and fourth of the season against the Avs.

The Preds had intended to depart Nashville on Friday afternoon, but mechanical issues with their aircraft forced them to fly the day of the game. But in the end, it didn’t matter.

“Talking about two gutsy wins at home, this one was the gutsiest of all of them,” Head Coach Peter Laviolette said. “Because of the circumstance that we had to overcome; I thought our guys played terrific.”

The Predators could’ve used flying from Nashville at 7 a.m. CT to arrive in Colorado in time for a 1 p.m. MT puck drop as an excuse. They could’ve complained about the altitude affecting their stamina. Perhaps it could’ve been the depleted blue line, missing both P.K. Subban and Roman Josi as a reason for a loss.

But instead, they put their heads down and recorded their fourth victory of the season over the Avalanche and kick off a five-game trip with a come-from-behind victory for a very important two points.

“Before the game, we talked about not having any excuses,” goaltender Pekka Rinne said. “It was a tough, long day for us, just leaving in the morning and our plans kind of getting [messed up]… It was extremely big win for us. This is our playoff time already, we have to get back in the picture and I can’t remember the last time we had a three-game winning streak, so it feels good.”

“It’s hard, the guys probably had to get up at 5:45 this morning, you’re out of sync and everything’s out of sync,” Laviolette said. “We’re such creatures of habit here, so much routine that goes on in the NHL on how we move and how we breathe, just day after day the same thing. This one is like OK, this is a whole new ballgame here, so our guys handled it really well.”

It didn’t take long for Cody McLeod to show what he’s capable of doing for the Predators.  Acquired on Friday from Colorado, McLeod suited up against his former team just more than 24 hours after the deal, and at 7:52 of the second period, he found the back of the net. Courtesy of a perfect feed from Harry Zolnierczyk, McLeod drove to the net and steered the puck past Semyon Varlamov for Nashville’s first of the afternoon and McLeod’s first with his new club.

Add that to a fight with Jarome Iginla, as well as 2:46 on the power play and a season-high 10:12 of ice time, it was an eventful afternoon for the veteran winger.

“It’s been kind of a whirlwind the last few hours, but I’m pumped to be here,” McLeod said. “I guess no better than getting it against your old team.”

“He’s just a hard-working guy that hits and fights and goes to the net; that’s a real good snapshot of who he is,” Laviolette said. “You saw it today. It’s always difficult when you come to a new team and new surroundings, so for him to have a big game like that, I’m happy for him and it’s special.”

Rinne echoed the sentiment from his coach and couldn’t be happier to have McLeod in a Predators jersey.

“Without any practice or anything, he did a really good job,” Rinne said. “Cody, huge goal by him, had a big scrap with Iginla too and he was a huge spark for our team. It’s just a nice to have him with us now.”

Notes:

James Neal returned to the lineup after missing the previous five games with an upper-body injury.

Harry Zolnierczyk and Derek Grant recorded assists on Cody McLeod’s goal, marking the first point in a Preds jersey for all three players.

Prior to Saturday’s game, the Preds recalled defenseman Petter Granberg from Milwaukee and assigned forward Pontus Aberg to the Admirals.

The Predators now head to Western Canada to prepare for a matchup on Tuesday with the Vancouver Canucks as their five-game road trip continues into next week.  Thunder Radio will bring you the broadcast of Tuesday’s game as part of the Predators Radio Network immediately following Coffee County basketball

It was not pretty, but the Coffee County Central High School basketball teams kept the hot streak rolling on Thursday night with a pair of wins at home against Fayetteville. Both teams collected their 5th wins in a row as they earned season sweeps over the Tigers and Lady Tigers. The Lady Raiders won by a final score of 63 to 50 while the boys came away with a 48 to 39 decision.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Raiders needed a huge 4th quarter to put away a much improved Fayetteville team. Coffee County trailed in each of the first 3 quarters as Fayetteville forced turnovers and shot the ball well from the perimeter. In the 4th quarter, the Lady Raiders closed out the game on a 16 to 7 run in the final 5 minutes to capture the win. With the win, the Lady Raiders improved to 12 and 3 on the season.
The Lady Raiders were led in scoring by Alliyah Williams who had 18 points as she earned the Crazy Daisies player of the game award. Abby Morgan added 16 points, including 11 in the 3rd quarter to spark the Lady Raider comeback. Aerial Williams chipped in 8.

In the boys’ game, the Red Raiders built a 10 point lead in the 3rd quarter but could never put away the athletic Tigers. After leading 14 to 8 after 1 quarter, Coffee County saw Fayetteville open the 2nd quarter on a 6 to 0 run to tie the game. From that point, the Raiders outscored the Tigers 25 to 12 to build a double digit lead and keep Fayetteville from getting within 8 points the remainder of the game. With the win, the Red Raiders improved to 15 and 3 on the season.
The Red Raiders were led in scoring by Garrett Eldridge who finished with 13 points. Tyrese McGee finished 12 points as he was named the Crazy Daisies player of the game. Stephen Sullivan scored 9 points and Grant Sadler chipped in 5.
Coffee County will be back at home on Saturday as they host Huntland in a non-district doubleheader at Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gym. The girls’ game will tip off at 6 PM and Thunder Radio will bring you all the action. Our live coverage begins at 5:50 with the Char-El Apartments and Home Rental Pregame Show.

Preds Edge Bruins 2 to 1 as Saros is Solid in Goal

The Predators defeated the Bruins 2-1 on Thursday at Bridgestone Arena.

Predators forward Filip Forsberg netted the game-winning goal in the final three minutes of the second period, and it was the sixth time in eight starts this season that goaltender Juuse Saros has allowed one goal or less.

Already without forwards James Neal and Colin Wilson as well as defenseman P.K. Subban because of injuries, the Predators lost defenseman Roman Josi to an upper-body injury. Josi received a high hit from Bruins forward Anton Blidh late in the first period of an incredibly physical game. Despite being sufficiently shorthanded, Nashville was able to win consecutive games for the first time in nearly a month.

Predators forward Austin Watson scored the opening goal to extend his career-high scoring streak to three games. In doing so, Watson exceeded his goal total from last season in 19 fewer games with his fourth this season. Each of Watson’s past three goals have occurred within a few feet from the crease on the kind of hard-nosed plays that the big-bodied Watson should be making.

There was a notable lineup change among the Predators’ forwards, with Derek Grant, claimed off waivers from Buffalo on Wednesday, centering the team’s fourth line and immediately involving himself physically. Grant, who left in the second period after fighting Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid, replaced veteran Mike Ribeiro, who was scratched for the first time this season.

Subban missed his 13th consecutive game, but he took part in Thursday’s optional morning skate, the first time he’s participated in an organized team activity since leaving the lineup because of injury last month. Subban is still on injured reserve with an upper-body injury that’s believed to be a herniated disc.

A five-game road trip starts Saturday afternoon in Denver against the NHL-worst Avalanche.  The Predators have defeated the Avalanche twice at Pepsi Center this season.  Faceoff is set for 2 PM and Thunder Radio will bring you the broadcast as part of the Fifth Third Bank/Nashville Predators Radio Network.
