Jumping out to a 5 to 0 lead in the 1st inning, the Westwood Lady Rockets softball team captured a 12 to 8 season opening win over Fayetteville on Thursday night in Fayetteville.  The win is also career win #1 for first year head coach Amanda Sullivan in her first game.  “We got timely hitting and were able to use our short game in the first inning” said Sullivan.

Fielding a team loaded with 6th and 7th graders, Sullivan was impressed with her team’s overall defensive play including a double play by 6th grader Abby Clark.  The Rockets banged out 13 hits and worked the Lady Tigers pitching for 10 walks.  The Lady Rockets were led in hitting by Hallie Wimberley who had 3 hits.  Haidyn Campbell, Madison Wakefield and Kaitlyn Davis all finished with 2 hits.  Campbell went the distance in the circle for Westwood as she struck out 9 to get the win.

The Lady Rockets return to the diamond on Monday when they travel to Woodbury to take on Cannon County.  First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 PM.

Westwood Soccer Opens Season with Shutout Win

John Martinez of Westwood soccer

In soccer, sometimes the best defense in a good offense.  The Westwood Rockets soccer team opened their season on Thursday night at home as they welcomed St. Andrews-Sewanee to Dyer-Bouldin Field.  The Rockets controlled the time of possession on their way to a 3 to 0 win.

Holding the visiting Mountain Lions without a shot on frame in the first half, Westwood was able to keep the ball in their offensive end 90% of the first half.  John Martinez connected on a pretty volley in front of the net in the 20th minute to give Westwood a 1 nil lead at intermission.

In the second half, St. Andrews-Sewanee was more aggressive on the attack peppering Rocket keeper Bodey Todd with 2 shots in the first 10 minutes.  The Rockets were able to turn the attack and score a goal in the 52nd minute by Elliot Sain and Lukas Workman added the final goal 2 minutes later.  Westwood outshot the Mountain Lions 16 to 3.

The Rockets are back in action on Monday when they travel to Tullahoma to take on the Tullahoma Middle School team.  The opening kickoff is set for 6 PM at the East Middle School field.

CCMS Soccer Opens Season with Win at White County

The Coffee County Middle School Red Raider soccer opened their season on Thursday night in Sparta against White County in a CTC conference matchup.  The Red Raiders powered in 2 goals in the first 6 minutes and 3 goals in the first half to claim a 3 to 2 win.

Time of possession, ball movement and good passing were the keys to victory said CCMS head coach Kenny Lockhart following the match.  Jayden Yates opening the scoring in the 2nd minute on a goal followed up by a goal from Ethan Roberts in the 6th minute to stake the Red Raiders to the 2 to 0 lead.  Yates added his second tally in the 18th minute as Coffee County took a 3 to 0 lead into the half.  A renewed pressure from White County in the 2nd half saw the Warriors find the back of the net 2 times.  Coffee County’s defense was able to quell the rally and hold on for the season opening win.

The Red Raiders are back in action on Thursday when they hold their home opener against Warren County.  That matchup is a conference matchup and is set to get underway at 5:00 PM.

Red Raider Soccer Drops Scrimmage Decision to Stewarts Creek

The Red Raider soccer team of Coffee County Central High School welcomed Stewarts Creek to the Raider Soccer Field on Thursday night for a scrimmage match up with the Red Hawks.  A pair of Stewarts Creek goals early and a goal late gave the visitors a 3 to 1 win in the preseason game.

Ben Reid got the lone goal for Coffee County as he drilled a free kick past the keeper from 30 yards out in the 48th minute.  The Red Raiders had several chances to level the score in the second half before Stewarts Creek added their 3rd goal in the final 2 minutes on a counter attack against an attacking Red Raider offense.

The Red Raiders will hold their final preseason scrimmage on Tuesday when they play host to Riverdale.  The varsity friendly is set to get underway at 7 PM at the Raider Soccer Field behind the Coffee County Raider Academy.  Coach Robert Harper will be a guest on Saturday’s Coffee Coaches Show to talk about the upcoming season.  The Coffee Coaches Show is broadcast live each Saturday from the showroom of AL White Ford/Lincoln and is heard at 10 AM each Saturday exclusively here on Thunder Radio.

Preds Fall in Heartwarming Return for Subban

Paul Byron scored in the dying seconds, and the Montreal Canadiens came back to defeat the Nashville Predators by a 2-1 final at Bell Centre on Thursday. The result snaps Nashville’s four-game win streak, keeping them at 73 points on the season.

With a lone goal in the first period, the Preds held a lead for a majority of the contest, but the Canadiens scored twice in the final frame, including Byron’s tally with 8.3 seconds to play in regulation to seal the win.

“It’s a tough loss,” Nashville Head Coach Peter Laviolette said. “Throughout the whole game, we felt pretty good about what we were doing… I thought our third period was really good, and we made a mistake in the last 10 seconds.”

A clapper from Ryan Ellis with the Preds on the power play put Nashville ahead 1-0 in the first. P.K. Subban, who earned the primary assist, was visibly excited following the early lead for the visitors in his first return to Montreal.

The score remained stagnant until the third stanza when Brendan Gallagher offered a wraparound bid toward the Preds’ cage that deflected off Matt Irwin, and then it was Byron who ended it on a partial break with less than 10 seconds to play.

For Nashville, the loss undoubtedly stings, especially on a night when Subban wanted nothing more than to come away with a win against his former club.

“I thought we played extremely well, and we had a number of chances,” Subban said. “I think that’s the story of the game – if we bury our chances, this game is over before the third period. But we didn’t, and that’s the nature of the NHL now. You have to bury your opportunities when you get them, but you have to give them credit, they found a way to win.”

A 10-minute span prior to the opening faceoff between the Preds and Canadiens helped to show just how much No. 76 meant to Montreal when he was playing in one of North America’s hockey-richest cities.

Tears rushed down P.K. Subban’s cheeks following the Canadiens’ video tribute commemorating the defenseman six seasons with the organization.

The support from the Habs’ faithful in the Bell Centre was immense for Subban, right from the opening moments of warm-ups when the blueliner skated out first for the Preds. The thousands in attendance responded with cheers and chants of “P.K., P.K., P.K.”

“It was great, [Montreal is a] first-class organization, so I would expect nothing less,” Subban said. “It was an emotional game for a lot of people out there. I really enjoyed it, but it’s too bad we didn’t get the two points.”

Subban then had this to say about his Preds teammates, who let him take the ice for warmups first with a playful gesture, the rest of the team remaining in the hallway until Subban had done a solo lap on Bell Centre ice.

“I have to be honest, I have a great bunch of teammates,” Subban said. “The way they’ve handled everything the past couple of days and everything since I was traded here, it’s first class and it’s a great group of men in there. Great hockey team, but a great group of men and guys that understand that there are somethings that are bigger than hockey.”

Notes:

Ryan Ellis exited the game in the first half of the second period and did not return. The d-man went down after pursuing a loose puck in neutral ice, suffering a lower-body injury. Ellis needed assistance getting to the locker room.

P.A. Parenteau, who was acquired by Nashville on Wednesday, did not play in Thursday’s game due to an upper-body injury. Colton Sissons, Brad Hunt, Harry Zolnierczyk and Anthony Bitetto were also out of the lineup.

The Preds are back in Nashville for their next game, a Saturday night tilt against Chicago at Bridgestone Arena (at 7 p.m. CT), before heading out to California for three more road contests next week.

Bucks Storm into TCCAA/Region VII Tournament as No. 1 seed

Hart, a freshman from Murfreesboro, broke Motlow’s single season record for steals when he recorded five during the Bucks’ 77-49 win over Jackson State on Saturday. The Motlow State Bucks kept momentum on their side heading into next week’s TCCAA/Region VII Tournament with a 77-49 thrashing of Jackson State in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon in Jackson.

The conference tournament begins March 6 in Morristown on the campus of Walters State, and the Bucks are the No. 1 seed. Motlow’s first tournament game will be Wednesday, March 8 at 2 p.m. EDT, against the winner of the opening round contest between No. 8 seed Jackson State and No. 9 Volunteer State.

The Bucks (25-5, 14-4) won the TCCAA regular season title and with it clinched a berth as a regional qualifier in the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas, beginning March 20. The Bucks could earn a better national tournament seed if they can win the conference tournament next week. Motlow enters the week ranked No. 19 in the latest NJCAA poll.

Motlow struggled early with the Generals on Saturday, leading only 28-24 at the half. However, the Bucks’ depth and balance showed itself in the second half as Motlow outscored the home team 49-25. The Bucks used the formula that has carried them to one of the best records in school history; 21 assists on 29 made baskets with 16 steals and 46 rebounds.

Murfreesboro freshman Isaiah Hart set a new school record by recording five steals. He now has 107 steals this season, breaking the old mark of 103 set by DeShawn Bowman in 2001-02. Earlier this season Hart also set the new single-game record when he recorded 10 steals on Jan. 25.

Jalen Bell led six double figure scorers with 13 points and eight rebounds, with Rashawn Fredericks securing another double-double by scoring 12 points and hauling down 11 rebounds while adding three steals. Damarcus Williams scored 11 and pulled down eight rebounds with two steals.

Javion Hamlet scored 10 points with 10 assists and is now second on Motlow’s all-time single season assist record board. He needs 47 more to break Larry Mackin’s record of 311 set in the 1973-74 season. Dillon Smith added 10 points, and Hart filled out his stat sheet well by adding 10 points, five rebounds and six assists to his five steals.

The Motlow State Lady Bucks completed one of the best regular seasons in school history and will take a five-game winning streak into next week’s TCCAA/Region VII Tournament following a 71-44 win over Jackson State Saturday afternoon in Jackson.

The Lady Bucks (25-4, 16-2), ranked No. 21 in the latest NJCAA poll, will open tournament play on Tuesday, March 7 at 6 p.m., when they face the winner of Monday’s game between No. 7 seed Cleveland State and No. 10 Columbia State. The tournament is being held at Walters State Community College in Morristown, and the host team is also the tournament’s No. 1 seed. The tournament winner advances to the NJCAA national tournament.

Motlow was never seriously challenged Saturday in Jackson, grabbing an 18-9 lead after one quarter and 41-23 at the half. Head Coach Bart Walker was able to play his reserves liberally, and Motlow’s statistics were spread somewhat evenly throughout the squad. The Lady Bucks had 24 assists on 29 made baskets and dominated the rebounding 50-24. Motlow recorded 16 steals and forced Jackson State into 17 turnovers.

Kienya Jones continued to set the pace for the Lady Bucks, scoring 15 points and hauling down 17 rebounds with three assists. Shalyn Washington also scored 15 and had six rebounds and two steals. Sara Vujacic, who leads Motlow on the season averaging 14.9 points per game, scored 12 and had four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Ebony Shaw scored nine points with five rebounds, LisaJo Wygal had six points and two boards, Aja Robertson scored five with two rebounds and two steals, and Taylor Hayes had three points, three rebounds and four steals.

The best Lady Bucks team since the school began women’s basketball in 1974 came in 1989-90 when the team posted a 27-4 overall record. In 2005-06 Motlow was 25-4 overall. Neither of those teams won their conference tournament and no Motlow women’s basketball team has ever been to the national tournament, being held this year in Lubbock, Texas, beginning March 20.

Poile Adds Parenteau, Pleased with Preds Roster

New Preds winger P. A. Parenteau

Prior to Wednesday’s NHL Trade Deadline, Predators General Manager David Poile said he would be content with his club’s roster even if he didn’t make any further moves.

He’s even happier with it now.

The Preds acquired forward P.A. Parenteau from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, an acquisition that should help the team down the stretch.

A veteran forward with 13 goals and 27 points this season with the Devils, the 33-year-old Parenteau has the capability to put the puck in the net, and Poile believes he could fit anywhere on Nashville’s top three forward lines.

“We were just looking for some depth on our top nine forwards, little bit of competition for our offensive guys,” Poile said. “This is a real good add, a guy that has pretty good stats this year – 13 goals already and certainly can jump into our top three lines and give us a little bit of an offensive boost. He’s also really good at shootouts, which I suspect we’ll have a few more of those before the year is over. It just feels like a really good add to our hockey club to make us a little bit deeper than we were before we made the trade.”

Prior to the deadline, Poile had already dealt for veteran forwards Cody McLeod and Vernon Fiddler, and combined with the addition of players like Matt Irwin, Yannick Weber and Juuse Saros, the general manager likes the look of his roster with less than six weeks remaining in the regular season.

“I didn’t think we needed to do too much based on the depth that we had and the way everybody was playing,” Poile said. “I think less disruption is probably better at this time, and I think Parenteau being a veteran player should probably assimilate to our team pretty easily.”

The recent play of the team certainly helped the comfort level. Nashville has points in six consecutive games, and with players like Filip Forsberg, Ryan Johansen, Viktor Arvidsson, Roman Josi and P.K. Subban – just to name a few – elevating their games as of late, Poile has reason to believe the best is yet to come.

“The feeling is good, we’re finding different ways to win games and one of the things that’s really jumping out at us is our offense has been the best it’s been in years,” Poile said. “We have some good things going on all three of our top lines, and we’re producing, so we’re playing very exciting hockey.” Then our defense, which we felt was going to be really good at the beginning of the season, is finally healthy and everybody is probably getting into top form, and I really think that’s making a huge difference in our team… I think we’re going in the right direction.”
