The Coffee County Central High School softball team opened play in the Gulf Shores Tournament on Monday with a pair of games.  Coffee County dropped the tournament opener to Thompson, Alabama 10 to 1.  In the nightcap, the Lady Raiders saw Clarksville score the game winning run in the bottom of the last inning to beat Coffee County 4 to 3.

Against Thompson, 4 Lady Raider errors saw the Alabama squad score 7 unearned runs in a 10 to 1 defeat of Coffee County.  After building a 5 to 0 lead after 2 innings, Thompson sent 9 batters to the plate in the 4th inning as they tacked on another 5 runs.  Coffee County got their lone run in the 5th inning.  The Lady Raiders were held to 4 hits in the defeat.  Katie Rutledge finished 2 for 3 with a pair of singles.  Tori Bell had a single and an RBI.

Against Clarksville, Coffee County saw the Lady Wildcats score the winning run on a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 5th inning to grab a 4 to 3 win.  Clarksville scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the 4th to grab a 3 to 1 lead before Coffee County rallied for 2 runs in the top of the 5th inning to tie the game at 3.  That set up the game winning walk-off sacrifice fly.  The Lady Raiders finished with 3 hits.  Katie Rutledge, Raven Rogers and Tori Bell each had a single.

Coffee County returns to tournament action bright and early on Tuesday morning.  The Lady Raiders open up against Oneonta, AL at 8 AM.  Coffee County will take on Alexandra, AL at 11.  The tournament’s single elimination championship begins on Wednesday.

Motlow Bucks’ Season Ends in Hutchinson with Loss in Quarterfinals of National Tournament

Motlow State guard Javion Hamlet reacts to the action during a game earlier this season at Copperweld Arena. Hamlet, a freshman from Memphis, led the Bucks in points (554) and assists (298) this season. His assist total is second all-time at Motlow for a single season, and his average of 8.5 assists per game led the nation. The No. 14 Motlow State Bucks jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead over No. 6 Eastern Florida State in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Men’s National Basketball Tournament, but after that it was all Titans as the Bucks fell 65-45 in Hutchinson, Kansas, Thursday night.

The Bucks (30-6) completed the most successful season in the 47-year history of the school’s men’s basketball program, winning both the TCCAA regular season championship and the tournament title. The national tournament appearance was only the second for Motlow, and the first time to advance to the ‘Elite Eight’ round.

After a rugged 70-69 win over No. 3 Georgia Highlands on Wednesday, the Bucks just didn’t have a lot left in the tank for the taller, more experienced Titans. Despite successfully slowing the pace of the game, ultimately Motlow was unable to hit enough shots. The Bucks attempted 39 three-point baskets and connected on only 10. From the field Motlow shot just 23.8 percent, while EFS hit 44.4 percent of its shots, including 11-22 three-pointers.

Motlow’s last lead came with 3:41 left to play in the first half, 20-19, after Isaiah Hart hit a three-pointer. From there the Titans went on a 13-0 run covering the end of the first half and the start of the second, and with 17:35 left to play the EFS lead was 30-20. Hart hit another three-pointer to pull the Bucks within seven, but that’s as close as the score would be the rest of the way.

Hart led Motlow with nine points and added three steals. He is the all-time single season Motlow leader in steals with 125, shattering the old record of 103, and finished third in the nation averaging 3.5 steals per game. Javion Hamlet scored seven with four assists. His 298 assists this season is the second most at Motlow in a single season and Hamlet led the nation averaging 8.5 assists per game.

Dillon Smith hit a pair of three-pointers and scored six points, Damarcus Williams had five points and five rebounds, and Rashawn Fredericks scored five with seven rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots. Fredericks averaged 13.1 points and 10 rebounds per game this season, and his 360 rebounds is third all-time in Motlow’s record book for a single season.

Kevonte Corley scored four points and had six rebounds, while Ross Plunkett, Javel Gillespie and Jalen Bell each hit late three-pointers and scored three points, with Bell adding three rebounds and two assists. Alek Zecevic and Chad Emmons both played but did not score.

The first two seasons under Head Coach J.T. Burton have seen the program garner more wins than any back-to-back seasons in school history. Burton now has a 55-13 record at Motlow, easily the highest winning percentage of any previous men’s basketball coach at the College.

The Tennessee Community College Athletic Association regular season title was the school’s sixth, while the conference tournament title was the fifth in school history. The national tournament appearance was the second for Motlow, and the program record is now 3-2 in Hutchinson.

CCMS Baseball Drops Pair of Games in Saturday Tournament Action

Ethan Baker of CCMS baseball slides safely into home on Saturday against Christiana

Strong starts on Saturday were not enough for the Coffee County Middle School baseball team as they dropped their final 2 games in the Blackman Challenge.  The Red Raiders opened Saturday under bright sunshine in a 15 to 7 loss to Christiana.  They finished the day in a 10 to 3 loss to Clarksville Academy in a game delayed more than an hour due to rain and lightning.

The Red Raiders led 6 to 5 headed to into the 4th inning behind the solid pitching performance of Hayden Hullett. Christiana notched 4 runs in the 4th inning before busting loose for 6 more in the 5th inning against the Raiders bullpen.  Kyle Farless finished the game with 3 hits and a pair of RBI.  Braden Brown had a pair of hits and an RBI while Hullett added a pair of singles.

In the second game, the Red Raiders jumped out to a 3 to 0 lead in the first inning, before surrendering 5 runs in the bottom of the first to Clarksville Academy.  Four of those runs were unearned aided by 4 Coffee County errors.  Nick Watkins, Trey Rogers and Braden Brown had the 3 RBI for the Raiders.

Coffee County returns to conference action on Monday when they open a series with conference rival South Franklin.  The Red Raiders play host to the Trojans on Monday night before traveling to Winchester for game #2.  Both games begin at 5 PM.

Preds Score Seven to Smash Sharks

Colton Sissons and James Neal both tallied twice and the Nashville Predators cruised to a win over the San Jose Sharks by a 7-2 final on Saturday night at Bridgestone Arena. The result gives the Preds a perfect sweep of their three-game home stand, 87 points overall and a spot back in third place in the Central Division.

Nashville posted seven goals for the first time this season, and combined with Pekka Rinne’s fifth consecutive win between the pipes, things are starting to come together for the Preds at just the right time.

“I do [think we’re hitting our stride],” Rinne said. “I think at times this year we’ve been searching for our game and trying to get the mojo and get it going. The consistency, that’s been maybe our issue, and lately that’s been great, especially this home stand. It’s a big time in the season, first of all, and it’s a really big week for us. We delivered, and the guys did a really good job.”

It didn’t take long for Sissons to collect his second goal in as many games when he converted on a scramble in front, and then after scrapping with Micheal Haley earlier in the opening period, Cody McLeod got his fifth of the season. Roman Josi started the play, driving to the net and hitting the crossbar with a shot before McLeod followed it up for the tally and a 2-0 lead after one.

San Jose pulled it to within one as the middle period began, but James Neal and P.K. Subban gave the Preds their third and fourth goals of the night for what was a 4-2 advantage after the second 40 minutes.

Sissons got his second of the night when he tipped in a shot from Smith in the third to make it 5-2, and Neal added his second on the power play before Viktor Arvidsson scored shorthanded with less than a minute left to put the exclamation point on Nashville’s 38th win of the season.

“Hopefully I can continue this hot streak as long as I can,” Sissons said. “It feels pretty good. We’re winning hockey games and getting crucial points. That’s the main goal for us.”

It’s no secret the Predators enjoy playing within the friendly walls of Bridgestone Arena – their 23-8-7 home record this season reflects that – but to collect six out of six points at this juncture of the campaign added a little something extra.

With just eight games remaining in the regular season schedule, the Predators will now hit the road for dates with the Islanders and Bruins, and Nashville Head Coach Peter Laviolette knows exactly what lies ahead.

“We needed [the points], because everybody keeps winning,” Laviolette said. “In the area that we are in the standings there is not a lot of losing going on, and we are just trying to keep pace right now. These games are important. We are headed out for one tough road trip right now, probably the toughest of the year. Seventy games ago we weren’t calling this the toughest road trip of the year, but based on where those two teams are at right now, we’ve got our work cut out for us.”

Colton Sissons is doing the scoring; Craig Smith and Colin Wilson are taking care of the dishing.

The trio, together on a line for the second straight game, cashed in again on Saturday night with Sissons scoring twice to go with three assists each from Wilson and Smith. The trio of helpers tied career highs for both players, and each member of the line is playing what is likely their best hockey of the season.

“They’re playing great, everybody knows it,” Sissons said of his line mates. “They’re just making plays constantly. Every shift, we seem to be getting out of our end and creating offense so it’s been a lot of fun.”

“Some of the goals they are scoring are really nice goals,” Laviolette said of the trio. “They are moving the puck well, they are cycling it well. They are hanging onto it, they are finding the holes, and finding the plays they need to make. Since they have been put together they have been constant contributors to the offense.”

After being honored with a pregame ceremony for appearing in 500 NHL games, goaltender Pekka Rinne went out and did what he’s done so many times before at Bridgestone Arena – lead his club to a victory in stellar fashion.

“This press conference isn’t long enough,” Laviolette said when asked to describe what Rinne means to the franchise. “He is an unbelievable goalie and he’s an unbelievable man as well. What he does on the ice is special and what he does off the ice as a person and a human being is special as well. He’s been here for a long time and he’s given this organization many good years and quality work that has allowed them to be successful. He’s been a face of the franchise and he’s handled it in such a classy way. We’re fortunate to have him here.”

Rinne has won five consecutive starts for the first time this season, five more victories in his illustrious career – to this point.

“It was something that I’ll remember for sure,” Rinne said. “I never once thought growing up that I would play 500 games in the NHL.”

Notes:

Preds Captain Mike Fisher missed his second consecutive game and remains day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

With the home stand finished, the Preds now head to the Northeast to begin the week with a back-to-back set, starting Monday in Brooklyn against the Islanders, followed by a trip to Boston on Tuesday.

CHS Baseball Falls to Blackman

Nathaniel Tate of CHS baseball

Despite out hitting Blackman, Coffee County found itself on the losing end again on Friday night.  A 4 run outburst in the 4th inning lifted the Blackman baseball team to a 6 to 2 win over Coffee County at Powers Field.  The win gave the Blaze a series sweep over the Red Raiders in the non-district rivalry.

The Red Raiders worked out of difficult jams in the 1st and second innings entering the 4th inning tied at 2.  In the fourth inning, Blackman combined 2 hits, 2 walks and 2 hit batters to plate 4 runs.   Coffee County rallied in the 5th and 7th innings to put runners in scoring position but the Raiders could never break through to close the gap.

The Red Raiders finished with 10 hits led by Nathaniel Tate who had 2 doubles and a single to be named the Crazy Daisies Player of the Game.  Cade Giles finished with a single and a double and 1 RBI while Jacob Langham had a pair of singles.

A pair of quick goals by Wilson Central in the first 10 minutes ended up being the deciding margin as the CHS soccer team fell 2 to 1 to the Wildcats in Gladeville.  Wilson Central got goals in the 5th and 9th minutes as they appeared to be in complete control.  Breyer Taylor answered for the Raiders in the 10th minute on a free kick to cut the deficit to 1.

The score stayed 2 to 1 for the remaining 70 minutes as both teams struggled  to mount an offensive attack against a pair of solid defenses.  The loss drops the Red Raiders’ record to 2 and 3 on the year as they get set to begin district play following Spring Break.

The Red Raiders will return to action on Tuesday, April 4th when they take on Shelbyville at the Raider Soccer Field.  Opening kick is set for 7 PM.
