Ellis, Rinne Star Again, Preds Win Game Four to Take 3-1 Series Lead

Win a period, win a hockey game.

Ryan Ellis opened the scoring and James Neal tallied the game-winner, all in the third period, as the Nashville Predators defeated the St. Louis Blues by a 2-1 final in Game Four to take a commanding 3-1 series lead.

It wasn’t until the final frame that anyone was able to find the back of the net, but just as they’ve done throughout the postseason, the Predators found a way, with their stud netminder backstopping them to their seventh win of the playoffs, tying a franchise record.

“This game was just an all-around good hockey game by both teams,” Ellis said. “It was a key win for us, but we still haven’t done anything yet. They’re not going to go away, and we’re going to have to come out even harder than we did tonight. It’s a good feeling, and we’re going to go with it for a couple of days, but we have to get back to work.”

Through the first 40 minutes of Game Four, goaltenders Pekka Rinne and Jake Allen kept things scoreless for the first time in this series, turning aside 18 and 15 shots, respectively. Perhaps the most impressive came in Rinne’s crease, with some help from defenseman Ryan Ellis as he swatted the puck off the goal line late in the second stanza to keep things at 0-0.

Physicality was also present as the two clubs sought out the first goal, with Nashville’s Austin Watson throwing seven hits through two periods.

But a power play early in the third broke the goal drought, when who else but Ellis fired a shot home with traffic in front, bringing an elated fist pump on the bench from Head Coach Peter Laviolette and giving the Predators a 1-0 lead. The goal marked Ellis’s seventh consecutive game with a point, tying a postseason franchise record.

And then, with less than seven minutes left in regulation, James Neal brought the house down with a beautiful shot from above the right circle that beat Allen to the top corner and gave the Preds a 2-0 advantage.

“He’s got an absolute cannon for a wrister,” Ellis said of Neal. “It catches a lot of guys by surprise. I didn’t really see the play, but it was a heck of a shot and it went top shelf. It’s a good thing for him. He’s been working hard and battling for us, and it’s nice to see him back to his old self.”

St. Louis made it interesting down the stretch when Joel Edmundson scored late, but Rinne finished the night with 32 saves in total and his seventh win of the postseason, tying a career high.

“We knew they were going to come, and we had to weather it a little bit,” defenseman Mattias Ekholm said. “They were a little angry from their last performance, but I thought we handled it pretty well. Pekka stood tall in net. Everyone battled tonight, everyone worked hard, and we did a lot of really good things defensively.”

The Predators now find themselves just one win away from the Western Conference Final for the second consecutive season. But as they’ve said all along, their accomplishments are minuscule to this point, compared to what they’re really after.

“It’s in our own hands, for sure,” Rinne said. “Being up 3-1 now, I think we can control our destiny.”

There isn’t much Ryan Ellis can’t do, and right now, he’s doing all of it.

Like scoring a goal for the third consecutive games. Or recording a point for the seventh consecutive game. Or maybe sweeping a puck off the goal line to help make his goaltender look that much better.

Indeed, Ellis has been rewriting Nashville’s postseason record book over the past few weeks, and if he is able to record a point in Game Five, he’ll set a franchise mark with points in eight consecutive games.

And again, he’s a defenseman.

“At both ends of the ice, he does everything for us,” Laviolette said of Ellis. “He plays terrific defense, he sacrifices his body all the time to block shots and just really strong, strong defensive player for us. And then offensively, he’s on a little bit of a roll right now, playing terrific in the offensive zone. He’s getting the shot off, he’s getting it on net, and it’s finding the back of the net, a 200-foot game.”

The goaltender behind Ellis isn’t half bad either.

Pekka Rinne collected his seventh win of the postseason on Tuesday night in Game Four, the fifth time in these playoffs he’s allowed one goal or less. Building off the lessons of season’s past, Rinne continues to play some of the best hockey he ever had, and it couldn’t come at a more opportune time.

“I think it was a really good experience last year, playing two seven-game series,” Rinne said. “I think the hardest lesson that we all learned is that it’s not going to be easy. It’s extremely hard, every team is extremely dangerous, so when you have a chance to close these things out you have to really step on their throat.”

Game Five between the Preds and Blues is set for Friday night in St. Louis, a 7 p.m. CT start. If necessary, Game Six will be on Sunday in Nashville; a start time is yet to be announced.

Freeman Homers as Braves Edge Mets, 9-7

Freddie Freeman homered and Ender Inciarte produced his first three-hit game of the season as the Braves battered Matt Harvey and provided R.A. Dickey sufficient support during Tuesday night’s 9-7 win over the Mets at SunTrust Park.

After Jay Bruce got the Mets rolling with a two-run homer, Freeman answered in the bottom half of the inning with his 10th home run of the season — a two-run shot that traveled a projected 422 feet per Statcast™ and landed in the upper level of the Chop House in right field. Inciarte provided a go-ahead double in the second inning and capped a three-run fourth inning with a two-run single.

While surrendering eight hits over 5 1/3 innings, Harvey allowed the Braves a season-high six earned runs for the second time in five days. The Mets’ right-hander received some early support from Bruce’s homer and the game-tying solo shot Asdrubal Cabrera provided in the third inning. But Dickey escaped damage over the remainder of his six-inning outing, within which he allowed just four hits.
The Mets made things interesting against Matt Wisler in the ninth inning. But after Bruce drilled a two-out grand slam, Jim Johnson entered and recorded the game’s final out to notch his fifth save of the season.

Sounds Rout Express 11-0 for 5th Straight Win

The Nashville Sounds extended their win streak to five games Tuesday night after clobbering the Round Rock Express 11-0. The Sounds offense launched five home runs on the night and has hit 13 over the last five games while the pitching staff recorded its first shutout of the season.
ROUND ROCK – The Nashville Sounds extended their win streak to five games Tuesday night after clobbering the Round Rock Express 11-0. The Sounds offense launched five home runs on the night and has hit 13 over the last five games while the pitching staff recorded its first shutout of the season.

Matt Chapman, Mark Canha, Renato Nunez, and Joey Wendle each clubbed round-trippers for the Sounds (11-11). For Nunez, it was his third straight game with a home run while Chapman was not content with just recording his first long ball of the season. The Sounds third basement went deep twice for his seventh career multi-home run game.

Round Rock (11-15) starter, Eddie Gamboa, left Tuesday’s start after just one inning due to pending roster moves from the Texas Rangers forcing Round Rock to go to its bullpen earlier than expected. Jose Valdespina (1-1, 16.50) replaced Gamboa and retired the first two batters he faced before surrendering a double to Chris Parmelee and a two-run bomb to Chapman. For the A’s #3 prospect it was his first home run of the season after clubbing 36 in 2016.

Meanwhile for the Sounds, Raul Alcantara (0-0, 0.00) looked sharp in his 2017 Nashville debut as he retired the first eight batters he faced before giving up a bloop single to Josh Wilson in the third inning. Alcantara needed just 40 pitches to get through three innings, 27 of which were strikes. The bullpen shut the door on the Express as they chipped in with six shutout innings for the Sounds’ first shutout of the season. Michael Brady (1-1, 4.30) tossed three scoreless innings to earn his first victory in 2017 and surrendered just one base hit.

Five of the nine Sounds hitters recorded multi-hit games led by Wendle who collected three base knocks. Canha and Chapman each drove in three runs for Nashville.

During the five game win streak for the Sounds, the offense has put up 40 runs on 56 hits while the pitching staff has allowed just nine runs. The starting pitchers have not allowed a single earned run during this stretch.

The Sounds continue a four game set with the Express Wednesday night for game two of the series. Right-hander Paul Blackburn (1-2, 1.64) takes the mound for the Sounds against right-hander Allen Webster (0-2, 8.71) for Round Rock. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

The 2017 season is the Sounds’ 40th in franchise history and their third as the Oakland Athletics’ top affiliate. Season ticket memberships are available now by calling (615) 690-4487 or by visiting www.nashvillesounds.com.

Conforto Hits HR, Drives in 3 to Power Mets Past Braves

Michael Conforto homered and drove in three runs, and the Mets scored five times in the fourth inning off Julio Teheran before holding out to beat the Atlanta Braves 7-5 on Monday night.

On the day the Mets placed ace Noah Syndergaard on the 10-day DL with a partial tear of his right lat muscle, Robert Gsellman (1-2) almost blew an early 6-1 lead. Gsellman allowed five runs in five-plus innings.

Five Mets relievers combined for four scoreless innings. Jeurys Familia pitched the ninth for his second save.

Conforto led off the game with his seventh homer and added a two-run single in New York’s five-run fourth inning off Teheran (2-2). With New York’s lead down to 6-5, Jose Reyes added a homer off Ian Krol in the eighth.

Atlanta’s Ender Inciarte hit his fifth homer to lead off the first.

The win provided a needed lift for the Mets, who moved out of last place in the NL East, a half-game ahead of Atlanta.

Syndergaard’s injury, suffered in the second inning of Sunday’s 23-5 loss to Washington, came as the team already was missing two injured hitters from the middle of its lineup.

Yoenis Cespedes was placed on the disabled list Friday with a strained left hamstring. First baseman Lucas Duda could have been eligible to return from a hyperextended left elbow, but he had a setback over the weekend while on his minor league rehab assignment.

The Mets’ five runs off Teheran in the fourth matched their scoring total in their last seven games against the Braves’ ace.

Before the game, Mets manager Terry Collins asked for players to “pick up the slack” and some of the team’s struggling hitters came through in the big inning.

Neil Walker, hitting .193, had a run-scoring single. Curtis Granderson, hitting .126, walked to load the bases. T.J. Rivera, hitting .192 as the fill-in for Duda, also had a run-scoring single up the middle. Conforto added a two-run single to right field.

The Mets recalled Paul Sewald from Triple-A Las Vegas to fill Syndergaard’s roster spot. Sewald gives the bullpen a fresh arm, and the team will make another move to fill Syndergaard’s spot in the rotation by Friday. Collins said left-hander Sean Gilmartin and right-hander Rafael Montero are the top candidates to join the rotation.

Matt Harvey will look for his second win over the Braves this season on Tuesday night at 6:35 PM CDT.  R.A. Dickey, who won the 2012 NL Cy Young Award with the Mets, will face his former team for only the second time. He beat New York on April 27, when he allowed three runs, two earned, in a 7-5 win.

McBride’s Walk-Off Blast Gives Sounds Dramatic Win

Matt McBride hit a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Nashville Sounds a dramatic 6-4 win over the New Orleans Baby Cakes in front of 8,262 fans at First Tennessee Park Monday afternoon.
With the score even at 4-4, Franklin Barreto laced a two-out triple into the right-center gap to set the stage for McBride. He hit the first pitch from lefty Kelvin Marte into the left field seats to give Nashville (10-11) the abbreviated four-game sweep.
The Sounds’ offense was stuck in neutral for the better part of the afternoon. Baby Cakes pitching held them to just one run on three hits through the first seven innings of the game.
Nashville’s comeback started in the bottom of the eighth inning when Renato Nuñez belted his team-leading fifth homer of the season, a solo blast to left-center to trim the deficit to 4-2.
After Sounds reliever Bobby Wahl tossed a 1-2-3 top of the ninth, New Orleans turned to right-hander Brian Ellington to try and close it out.
He struck out Matt Chapman for the first out in the inning before the Ryan Lavarnway sparked a rally with a double down the left field line. Kenny Wilson immediately collected a double of his own, plating Lavarnway to make it 4-3.
Wilson then stole third base and raced home moments later when Melvin Mercedes lined a base hit to right field to even the game at 4-4.
Ellington escaped further damage but the game continued into extras where Nashville relievers kept it rolling. Tyler Sturdevant, Wahl, and Josh Smith combined to throw five scoreless innings to give the Sounds a chance.
Both teams squandered run-scoring opportunities in the 10th. New Orleans and Nashville had a runner at third base with less than two outs but failed to score.
McBride’s blast was the first walk-off win of the season for the Sounds who have now won four consecutive games.
The Sounds hit the road for a four-game trip in Round Rock, Texas. Game one of the series is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tuesday night.
