Braves Unable to Recover from 5-Run 1st

Carlos Correa and Carlos Beltran slugged back-to-back homers to cap a five-run first inning against Bartolo Colon, and Josh Reddick took him deep in the fifth to send the Astros to their seventh win in nine games, 8-3, over the Braves on Tuesday night at Minute Maid Park.

The Astros improved to 22-11, which ties the 1973 team for best start in club history.
Colon (1-4) fell behind 5-0 before recording an out, but he came back to send down 13 of the next 14 batters faced. Reddick hit a home run — the 100th of his career — to push the Houston lead to 6-0 in the fifth.
Astros starter Charlie Morton (4-2) cruised into the sixth before his command betrayed him. Matt Kemp and Nick Markakis had RBI singles in the sixth, and Morton was pulled after he walked Dansby Swanson with the bases loaded to get the Braves to within three runs, 6-3. Chris Devenski struck out Danny Santana to end the threat.

Two-Run Ninth Gives Chihuahuas Win over Sounds

The El Paso Chihuahuas scored a pair of runs in the ninth inning to grab an 8-6 win over the Nashville Sounds, spoiling Bark in the Park Night in front of 8,691 humans and 500+ dogs at First Tennessee Park Tuesday night.

Nashville (13-16) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to even the game at 6-6 only to see El Paso do the exact same in the ninth to steal a series-clinching win.

Reliever Ross Detwiler started the top of the ninth for the Sounds and got two quick outs before yielding a walk to Diego Goris. The Sounds turned to right-hander Simon Castro out of the bullpen. He hit Dusty Coleman with a pitch, and then allowed consecutive run-scoring singles to Christian Villanueva and Rocky Gale.

El Paso right-hander Jason Jester worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to lock down the win for the Chihuahuas.

Sean Manaea started the game for Nashville on a Major League rehab assignment. The southpaw went four innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits. He walked one, struck out five, and threw 72 pitches.

Chris Bassitt followed on a Major League rehab assignment of his own. The right-hander also worked four innings and didn’t factor into the decision. Bassitt allowed four runs on five hits and four walks. He struck out six and threw 70 pitches.

The Sounds out-hit the Chihuahuas, 12-11, thanks to multi-hit games from Ryan LaMarre who went 3-for-4, and Matt Olson who added a pair of hits including his fifth home run of the season.

Olson’s solo blast came in the second inning and was followed immediately by a solo shot from Matt Chapman. It was the first set of back-to-back homers by Nashville this season.

Every other player in the lineup for Nashville had a hit. Franklin Barreto knocked in a pair of runs – both coming on his game-tying two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Detwiler was charged with the loss while Christian Bethancourt earned the win despite a blown save.
The Sounds have a team off day Wednesday before beginning a four-game series with the Albuquerque Isotopes Thursday night. First pitch at First Tennessee Park is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Red Raiders Get Dramatic Walk-Off Win on Monday

AJ Rollman of CHS baseball

Facing elimination on Monday night, the Red Raiders faced off against Lawrence County in the loser’s bracket of the District 8AAA baseball tournament.  After the Red Raiders saw a bad 4th and 5th inning put them in a 5 to 1 hole, it appeared that the season was over with 9 outs remaining.  But Coffee County rallied to get a walk off win on a single from AJ Rollman to capture a 6 to 5 victory.

Trailing by 4 entering the bottom of the 5th inning, Coffee County chipped away at the Wildcats lead getting a single run in the 5th, 2 in the 6th and a pair of runs in the 7th to claim the dramatic win.  Noah Anderson led off the bottom of the 7th with a double.  One out later, Nathaniel Tate doubled Anderson home to tie the game.  After Grant Sadler walked, it looked like extra innings as Coffee County made the 2nd out.  But an intentional walk of Garrett Eldridge brought up Rollman with the bases loaded.  Here is how Thunder Radio’s Lucky Knott called the action:

Anderson finished the game going 3 for 3 with a double and a sacrifice.  Tate also had a double and a pair of singles.  Eldridge finished with a pair of singles.  Rollman finished with 2 hits and the game winning RBI to earn the Crazy Daisies player of the game award.  Jacob Langham came on in relief to pitch 2 1/3 scoreless innings to get the win.

The Red Raiders will be back in action on Tuesday when they take on Franklin County that game will get underway at 6:30 PM.  The contest will take place at the Gamble Sports Complex in Winchester.

The Coffee County Middle School golf team welcomed Tullahoma to Willowbrook on Monday. The match was the final regular season match of season. The Raider team was only able to capture 1 ½ flags out of a possible 12 to fall to the talented Tullahoma squad. The Raider team of Logan Hale and Chase Hancock got all the points for Coffee County.
Coffee Middle and Westwood will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Tullahoma for the CTC conference tournament. Tee time is set for 9 AM.

Chihuahuas Nip Sounds at First Tennessee Park

Another late comeback attempt fell short for the Nashville Sounds in a 5-4 loss to the El Paso Chihuahuas in front of 5,943 fans at First Tennessee Park Monday night.
Renato Nuñez belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull the Sounds within a run, but that’s where the game ended up.
Nashville put three runners on after the home run but failed to score. Matt Chapman singled but was caught stealing moments later. After two more reached safely, Ryan LaMarre struck out to end the threat.
Franklin Barreto started the ninth with a single but was caught stealing second two batters later. Reliever Phil Maton retired Joey Wendle and Mark Canha to earn his sixth save of the season.
Daniel Mengden started for the Sounds (13-15) on a Major League rehab assignment and allowed a pair of runs in 3 2/3 innings. The right-hander yielded four hits, walked two, and struck out three in his season debut.
Mengden and El Paso starter Zach Lee matched zeros until the Chihuahuas plated two in the third. Carlos Asuaje plated the first run of the night with a double off the left field wall. Moments later, Nick Buss lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score Asuaje and make it a 2-0 game.
The Sounds got a run back in the fourth thanks in part to some shaky El Paso defense. Walks issued to Matt Olson and Matt Chapman put runners at first and second for Nashville. On a base hit to left field by Jaycob Brugman, Olson and Chapman both ended up near third base. As Chapman ran back to second base and got in a rundown, Olson broke for home and scored. El Paso’s throw back to second got into center field and Chapman was safe at second.
It stayed 2-1 until the top of the eighth as pitchers locked in on both sides. Lee allowed just one run over six innings of work and earned his first win of the season.
Nashville’s Paul Blackburn worked four innings of relief but ran into trouble in the eighth inning – his final frame. Rafael Ortega drilled a two-run homer, and Rocky Gale knocked in a run as part of a 4-for-4 night.
The series finale is scheduled for Tuesday night at First Tennessee Park. Left-hander Sean Manaea starts for the Sounds on a Major League rehab assignment against right-hander Walker Lockett (3-1, 5.34) for the Chihuahuas. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
The 2017 season is the Sounds’ 40th in franchise history and their third as the Oakland Athletics’ top affiliate. Season ticket memberships are available now by calling (615) 690-4487 or by visiting www.nashvillesounds.com.

Kaylee Skipper of CHS Softball(file photo)

Playing perhaps their most complete game of the season, the Coffee County Lady Raiders opened District 8AAA tournament play with an 8 to 0 win over Shelbyville on Sunday. Coffee County, who struggled with Shelbyville in their last meeting on Wednesday, played error free softball while Kaylee Skipper pitched a 3 hit shutout to get the win.
The Lady Raiders got off to a hot start in the tournament game played at Lawrence County. Skipper retired the Eaglettes in order in the top of the first before Coffee County plated 4 runs in the bottom of the inning; all coming with 2 outs. The big hit in the frame was a 2 RBI triple from Kaylee Skipper. Her battery mate Lauren Tomberlin added a 2 RBI single. After going scoreless in the 2 thru 4th innings, Coffee County sent 10 batters to the plate in the 5th inning getting 5 hits and scoring their final 3 runs. Skipper picked up another RBI on the fielder’s choice and Ashlynn Morton had an RBI bunt single. Skipper finished the game with 6 strikeouts and no walks to go with her 3 RBI to earn the Crazy Daisies player of the game honor. Raven Rogers finished with a pair of singles for the Lady Raiders.
Coffee County will now take on Lawrence County in the winner’s bracket final on Tuesday at Lawrence County High School. That game will begin at 7 PM and Thunder Radio will be on hand to bring you the broadcast. A win there would guarantee the Lady Raiders a berth in Thursday’s championship game AND a berth in next week’s Region 4AAA tournament.
