CHS Volleyball Falls to White County

Amanda Mukai of CHS volleyball

For the second time this year, the Lady Raider volleyball team faced off against a talented White County team.  Hosting the Warriorettes, the Lady Raiders were hoping to avenge an earlier season loss in Sparta.  The Lady Raiders could not gain the season split as they fell in 4 sets to White County by set scores of 18-25, 13-25, 25-21 and 20-25.

Twenty one service errors and 15 hitting errors spoiled the Lady Raiders upset bid.  Tyana Fenton led Coffee County in aces with 5 and digs with 19.  Alliyah Williams led the team in kills with 8 and tied for the team lead in blocks with 2.  Amanda Mukai added a pair of blocks as she led the team in assists with 27.  Keelie Hills had a pair of blocks and 5 kills.

The Lady Raiders travel to Columbia on Tuesday night for a district match with the Lady Lions.  The Lady Raiders will attempt to stay perfect in district play.  First serve is set for 6 PM.

CCMS Soccer Blasts North Franklin

Anna Amado of CCMS Soccer

After a scoreless first half, the Coffee County Middle School soccer team exploded for 5 goals in the second half, with 3 of them coming in a 5 minute period, to dump North Franklin on Monday night.  Coffee County captured the conference win in dominating fashion as 5 different Lady Raiders found the back of the net.

Jayda Wright got the Lady Raiders on the board with an unassisted goal.  Anna Amado added the 2nd goal on an assist from Marley Perry.  Katie Cotten made it 3 to 0 for Coffee County off a feed from Wright.  Marley Perry got the 4th goal after a pass from Amado and Ellie Fann closed out the Coffee County scoring with an unassisted goal.   North added their lone goal late to close out the scoring.

Coffee County is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Tullahoma to take on the Lady Wildcats.  That match will get underway at 5:30 PM at East Middle School.

CHS Cross Country Teams Compete at Smyrna on Saturday

Bradley Kishpaugh of CHS Cross Country

The Coffee County CHS cross country team traveled to Smyrna on Saturday morning to compete in the annual Voyles Classic at Sharp Springs Park.  Facing off against runners from more than 80 middle Tennessee high schools, the Raider and Lady Raider harriers performed well.

For the Lady Raiders, Sarah Pearson was the top finisher as she finished the 5K course with a time of 22:38.96 which was good enough for 72nd place.  Emily St. John came in 100th with a time of 23:22.94.  Other Lady Raider runners were Byanka Woods(26:26.35), Kara Mueller(28:23.06), Zoe Mills(28:24.03) and Shelby Watkins(32:28.67).  The Lady Raiders finished as the 24th place team for the meet in the Class AAA division.

Bradley Kishpaugh paced the Raider runners as he finished in 94th place with a time of 18:18.65.  Other Raider runners were Andres Cavalie(20:07.15), Neil Slone(20:39.96), Larson Meltzer(21:28.98), Jacon Melton(23:21.01), Reuben Chaput(23:37.73) and Eric French(25:27.53).  The Red Raiders captured a 35th place team finish.

The Raider harriers are back in action on Tuesday, September 5th when they travel to McMinnville for a race at Warren County High School.  The meet will feature races for middle school and high school teams.   Both Coffee County Middle School and Coffee County Central High will be in action.  The first race is set to begin at 8 AM.

CCMS Volleyball Falls to White County

Kylie Millaway of CCMS volleyball

After keeping each set close, the Coffee County Middle School volleyball team saw White County pull away late in each set to capture a 2 set win on Monday.  In a match that the Lady Raiders led in each set, it was the experience and communication of White County which proved to be the deciding factor down the stretch in each set.  White County won by set scores of 25 – 21 and 25 – 17.

Unforced errors at the net proved costly for the Lady Raiders in the first set as White County was able to rally for the win.  Five service errors in the second set kept the Lady Raiders from closing the gap late in the second set to set up a deciding 3rd set.  Unofficially, Kiya Ferrell led Coffee County in kills with 6.  Lauren Brandt and Hannah Richardson each had a pair of kills.  Brandt led the Lady Raiders in assists with 3 while Kylie Millaway added a pair of assists.  Millaway and Ferrell tied for the team lead in service aces with 3 while Brandt added an ace.

The Lady Raiders are back in action on Thursday, September 7th when they play host to North Franklin.  The varsity match gets underway at 5 PM.

Braves Struggle vs. Phillies’ Nola in Opener Loss

Rhys Hoskins can’t be stopped.

While the rookie sensation didn’t extend his home run streak to six games, Hoskins went 2-for-4 with an RBI double, as the Phillies took the series opener from the Braves, 6-1, on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park. Hoskins ripped a first-pitch fastball from Braves starter Lucas Sims in the sixth inning to drive in the go-ahead run, which kept the Phillies in front for good. Hoskins’ 25 RBIs are the second most in baseball history through a player’s first 19 big league games. Mandy Brooks had 28 in 1925.
Sims, making his sixth career start, threw 6 1/3 innings and allowed four runs — three of which came in the sixth and seventh innings — as the Braves fell to 2-12 this season against the Phillies.
After a pair of starts that saw him allow a combined 12 runs, Aaron Nola held the Braves in check over seven strong innings. The Phillies’ right-hander allowed one run on five hits without a walk and struck out six. Brandon Phillips, who has 1,999 career hits after going 2-for-4, drove in the Braves’ only run with a single in the sixth inning.
The Phillies added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning through a bases-loaded walk to Cameron Rupp, who hit a solo homer off Sims in the seventh, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Daniel Nava.
After Phillips’ two-out single tied the game at 1 in the sixth, Freddie Freeman hit a line drive to right field, where Nick Williams made a diving catch to end the inning and Atlanta’s threat. The ball had a catch probability of 44 percent, making it a four-star catch according to Statcast™. The rookie outfielder ran 38 feet in 3.1 seconds to make his first catch of at least four stars this season.
Sims held the Phillies in check through the first two innings, but Pedro Florimon led off the third with a triple to right-center field. After Rupp grounded out, Nola stepped into the box 1-for-36 this season and laced a 98-mph grounder up the middle to score Florimon and give the Phillies a 1-0 lead.

Storm Chasers Outlast Sounds in Extras

The Omaha Storm Chasers scored a run in the 13th inning to edge the Nashville Sounds, 3-2, at First Tennessee Park Monday night.
The four-hour, 14-minute marathon came to an end when the Storm Chasers put together a rally after both teams were held off the scoreboard since the sixth inning.
With Nashville’s Patrick Schuster on the mound, Cam Gallagher singled to right-center to start it. Hunter Dozier doubled to the gap in right-center to put runners at second and third for Billy Burns who put Omaha on top with a run-scoring groundout.
Omaha’s Jake Newberry set the Sounds down in order in the bottom of the 13th to seal the series-opening win for the Storm Chasers.
Both starters were effective as Nashville’s Josh Smith tossed five shutout innings in a spot start, and Omaha’s Jace Vines limited the Sounds to two runs over six innings in his the first Triple-A start of his career.
Smith made a few big pitches to get out of a couple of jams throughout the night. With a pair of runners on in the first, he got Jorge Soler to bounce into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play.
With two on in the fifth, Ramon Torres hit a line drive that looked ticketed for the right field corner. Sounds right fielder Yairo Munoz raced towards the line and made a diving catch to take extra bases away from Torres. Smith stranded the two runners by striking out Raul Mondesi to end the inning.
The Sounds started the scoring in the second when Joey Wendle led off the inning with a sharp single to right field. After Chris Carter was retired, Munoz drilled a ball off the right field wall for a run-scoring triple to make it 1-0.
Munoz was at it again in the fourth when he knocked in his second run of the game. Renato Nunez started the inning with a double down the right field line and came around to score on a base hit up the middle by Munoz.
Omaha evened the game in the sixth when Jorge Soler launched a two-run homer off reliever Chris Bassitt. That was the last of the scoring until the 13th inning when Omaha staged the game-winning rally.
Nashville’s Raul Alcantara, Lou Trivino, and Sam Moll combined for five shutout innings in relief.
Game two of the four-game series is scheduled for Tuesday night at First Tennessee Park. Right-hander Daniel Mengden (2-3, 3.73) starts for the Sounds against right-hander Christian Binford (5-10, 7.78) for the Storm Chasers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Titans Sloppy in Preseason Loss to Bears

The Titans showed some positive signs on Sunday against the Bears.

They also showed they still have plenty of work to do before the regular season opener.

The Bears beat the Titans 19-7 at Nissan Stadium on a day when the team struggled on both sides of the ball early, and played sloppy football throughout.

“Too many mistakes,” Titans coach Mike Mularkey said. “We have a lot of work to do. Same old thing with making too mistakes. We have to overcome ourselves, let alone to beat anybody.”

Quarterback Marcus Mariota and the first-team offense ended on a high note at least.

Mariota guided the Titans on an 11-play, 90-yard drive on a possession that ended with a three-yard touchdown pass to running back Derrick Henry on the first play of the fourth quarter. It cut Chicago’s lead to 12-7 at the time.

Mariota finished the contest 12-of-21 for 193 yards and a touchdown before being relieved by back-up Matt Cassel in the fourth quarter. His most memorable completions when to rookie Taywan Taylor, Rishard Matthews, Delanie Walker and Henry.

But the Titans, playing without receivers Corey Davis, Eric Decker and Harry Douglas, never really looked in sync in this one.

“We just weren’t crisp,” Walker said. “We didn’t play our game. We didn’t execute the way we should have on offense. I am not speaking on the defense, but we had critical penalties that set us back. I think there are some things we have to clean up and get that out of the way before we head to week one.”

The Bears jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on quarterback Mike Glennon’s one-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dion Sims. It capped off a 15-play, 96-yard drive which saw the Bears convert three third downs.

The Bears made it 9-0 when a Brett Kern punt was blocked, and recovered in the end zone for a safety. A 41-yard field goal by kicker Connor Barth made it 12-0 at halftime.

Defensively, rookie Adoree’ Jackson started opposite Logan Ryan on the outside, and moved inside when LeShaun Sims entered the contest. Jackson struggled early, but he showed up on run support and seemed to settle down after allowing several completions early.

“I didn’t do too good,” Jackson said afterward. “You just have to keep fighting. You can’t do things like that in a regular season game, so I’m glad I got that out of the way. Everything happens for a reason, so I’m glad I got that out of the way. I know I have room to improve.”

After the Titans trimmed the lead on Henry’s touchdown catch in the fourth quarter, Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky connected with Tanner Gentry for a 45-yard touchdown pass to make it 19-7.

“On the field, I just don’t think we played enthused enough for us to win,” linebacker Wesley Woodyard said. “I know we didn’t make enough plays to give is a chance to win. We have to get better.”

Running back DeMarco Murray and receiver Tajae Sharpe made their 2017 preseason debuts on Sunday. Murray, who missed the first two games with a hamstring injury, carried the ball six times for 16 yards in the first half. Sharpe, removed from the team’s PUP list earlier this week, had one catch for 10 yards.

The Titans wrap up the preseason on Thursday at Kansas City.

The regular season opener against the Raiders is now less than two weeks away.

“Definitely not where we wanted it to be coming out for a dress rehearsal,” defensive lineman Jurrell Casey said of Sunday’s performance. “So we have to clean that up.”
