Following Friday’s District 8AAA coaches’ meeting, it was confirmed that the Coffee County soccer team won the regular season district title.  Coffee County and Lincoln County tied with the best overall records at 6 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie.  The Lady Raiders earned the district title by virtue of aggregate goals.

During the regular season, Coffee County and Lincoln County split their 2 meetings.  Lincoln County defeated Coffee County 3 to 1 at Coffee County on Monday, September 25th.  Coffee County returned the favor on Thursday night with a 3 to 0 victory.  Since Coffee County scored 4 goals overall to Lincoln County’s 3 goals, Coffee County earned the regular season district title.  .

The title gives the Lady Raiders a berth in the district tournament semifinals against the winner of the play-in game.  It also means that the Lady Raiders will have home field advantage throughout the district tournament.  Coffee County will open the district tournament at home on Tuesday, October 10th at 6:30 PM.  Thunder Radio will be on hand to bring you the broadcast as part of the First National Bank Hometown Sports Series.

The Motlow State Lady Bucks will host Gordon State (GA) College for a soccer match on Saturday, Oct. 7, at Shelbyville Central High School in Shelbyville. Admission is $5 per person, with half the admission proceeds to be donated to the Multi-County Cancer Support Network. In addition, fans are encouraged to wear pink to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.

According to the Multi-County Cancer Support Network website, “MCCSN is a not-for-profit organization formed to help relieve the everyday crises of families touched by cancer in an eight-county area including Franklin, Coffee, Moore, Lincoln, Grundy, Marion, Warren, and Bedford. Financial aid is provided to those qualifying as well as wheelchairs, wigs, etc.”

The Lady Bucks (2-5-1) are first scheduled to travel to Lookout Mountain, Georgia, to face the Covenant College JV squad Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Motlow is recovering from a weekend road trip to Mississippi that saw it drop a pair of matches, both by shutout. On Friday the Lady Bucks went to Senatobia and dropped a 1-0 decision to Northwest Mississippi, then traveled to Tupelo Saturday and fell to Itawamba 2-0.

Although the defense and goal keeping continue to play at a high level for the Lady Bucks, the offense has been unable to get untracked the past three contests after scoring 11 goals over two games in mid-September.

Friday’s game was a foul-marred event, with eight by Motlow and seven by Northwest Mississippi. The home team had 17 total shots with Motlow shooting 10 times. From her goalkeeper position, Motlow’s Lena Alakabi blocked seven of eight shots on goal. Northwest scored its goal at the 52:48 mark as Taylor Williams knocked in a rebound.

Saturday the home team had both goals by halftime, then held off the Lady Bucks’ efforts in the second half. Itawamba scored at the 13-minute mark with Deanna Christie and at 35 minutes with Allie Barnett. Motlow took 11 shots on the afternoon but couldn’t get any inside the posts, while the Lady Bucks goalkeepers made 10 saves.

Saturday’s game in Shelbyville is the first of three remaining home games during the inaugural season of Motlow soccer. The Lady Bucks will host Southwest Tennessee on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 6 p.m. at the Johnson Lane Recreation Area in Tullahoma, then host Covenant College in Smyrna on Oct. 18.

Raiders Fall to #1 Oakland

The Red Raider football team hit the road on Friday night to take on the #1 team in the state, Oakland.  The Patriots, 5 and 0 on the year with wins over Maryville and Blackman, hosted Coffee County for homecoming.  The Patriots forced 5 first half turnovers to build a 41 to 0 halftime lead.  Coffee County fell by a final score of 41 to 9.

The Red Raiders were able to move the ball in the first half, accumulating over 100 yards in the opening 2 quarters.  But 2 fumbles and 3 interceptions killed any and all Coffee County momentum.  The Raiders finally got on the scoreboard in the 4th quarter when Tyler Walker hit a 33 yard field goal.  The field goal was the first of his career and earned him the Crazy Daisies Player of the Game award.  Alontae Taylor added a touchdown run in the last 2 minutes for Coffee County.

Taylor finished the night with 119 yards rushing on 15 carries,  Deaaron Rozier and Cameron West each finished with 21 yards on the ground.

Titans Lose Game, QB Marcus Mariota in Houston

The Titans had a problem in Houston.

Actually, they had several.

Offensively, the team got off to another slow start, and ended up turning the ball over five times in the game. On defense, the Titans couldn’t get stops, as the secondary had all kinds of trouble in coverage. To make matters worse, Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered a hamstring injury, and didn’t finish the game.

It all added up to an ugly 57-14 loss to the Houston Texans here at NRG Stadium.

“That was a total team loss, all the way around, including coaching,” Titans coach Mike Mularkey said. “They obviously played a better football game than we did, in all three phases, and include coaching on that. … A tough lesson learned for us.”

Mariota completed 6-of-10 passes for 96 yards in the first half, and he scored on touchdown runs of two and 34 yards in the game. But back-up Matt Cassel took over for Mariota in the third quarter, and played the rest of the way. Mularkey said Mariota is scheduled for an MRI, which would reveal the extent of the injury.

It was ugly early, as the Titans fell behind out of the gate, and things never really got better.

“Disgusting,” Titans tight end Delanie Walker said. “This loss doesn’t define us – today, Houston was just better than us. But guys should be upset, and I sure everybody in here is upset.”

On defense, the Titans struggled in coverage, as Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson completed 25-of-34 passes for 283 yards and four touchdowns, along with an interception. Watson also ran for a touchdown.

The Texans racked up 445 yards of offense against the Titans, and 33 first downs.

“We are professionals, and we didn’t play professional football today,” cornerback Logan Ryan said. “We have to learn from the mistakes, burn the film, and go out there and do better next week. … We have some leaders on this team, some great players on this team, and we don’t like the taste of this.

“We are not the first team to lose by a lot of points in this league. It’s one loss, and we have to respond and play our style of football.”

The Titans struggled early and late.

After a Mariota interception on the team’s third offensive play, the Texans quickly drove down the field and scored on a two-yard touchdown run by running back Lamar Miller.

The Texans made it 14-0 when Watson connected with receiver DeAndre Hopkins on an eight-yard pass. The Texans increased the lead to 21-0 on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Watson to receiver Will Fuller.

The Titans, meanwhile, couldn’t get anything going on offense until a drive at the start of the second quarter.

That’s when Mariota capped off a 5-play, 75-yard drive with a 34-yard touchdown run, making it 21-7 with 11:44 remaining in the second quarter.

After the Texans stretched the lead to 24-7 on a 50-yard field goal by kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn, Mariota connected with receiver Rishard Matthewsfor completions of 13 and 28 yards on a scoring drive that was capped off with a two-yard touchdown run by Mariota to cut the lead to 24-14 with 1:50 remaining before halftime.

But Marota injured his hamstring on that play, and the Titans couldn’t slow down the Texans. A pass interference by cornerback Adoree’ Jackson in the end zone gave Houston the ball at the 1, and Watson ran it in to make it 30-14. Titans safety Kevin Byard picked off Watson near the goal line just before halftime, but it was one of the few plays the Titans made on defense on this day.

The Texans kept rolling in the second half. Watson’s third touchdown pass of the game – a 10-yard pass to Fuller – capped off a 14-play, 75-yard drive, and a Watson-to-Miller touchdown pass in the fourth quarter made it 44-14 with 11:19 left. Another Fairbairn field goal made it 47-14 with 8:39 left.

Cassel completed 4-of-10 passes for 21 yards in the second half, with two interceptions, one that was returned for a touchdown by linebacker Dylan Cole. Another Fairbairn field goal accounted for the final margin.

“I would have loved to go out there and started a comeback, but today obviously it didn’t go well,” Cassel said. “It was a bad day at the office. I have to play better obviously. I have been doing this for a long time and this was one of those things where things went downhill pretty quickly.”

The Titans face the Dolphins next Sunday in Miami.

The Titans are now 2-2 in the AFC South, tied atop the division with the Texans and Jaguars. The Colts (1-2) face the Seahawks later tonight.

“We’re a good team,” Mularkey said. “We can compete, and I’ll say this about or team – (effort) was not a question today. We competed four quarters, and they were the better team today.”
