Titans Fall to Cardinals

The Titans offense dried up in the desert here on Sunday, and not even a valiant effort from the defense could bail them out.

The result was a 12-7 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Quarterback Marcus Mariota completed 16-of-31 passes for 159 yards, with two interceptions.

With the loss, the Titans dropped to 8-5.

The Titans racked up eight sacks on defense — Johnathan Cyprien, Erik Walden, David King and Jurrell Casey, Wesley Woodyard, Avery Williamson and Brian Orakpo all sacked Cardinals quarterback Blaine Gabbert. Casey got Gabbert twice.

But it wasn’t enough, as the Titans struggled to get anything going in the second half.

Running back Derrick Henry put the Titans on the scoreboard first with a six-yard touchdown run. Henry fought off Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson as he approached the goal line, and he lunged to the pylon for the score.

The scoring play capped a nine-play, 50-yard drive, and gave the Titans a 7-0 lead. The Titans converted two third downs on the drive – first on a 3rd-and-1 run by Henry, and later on an 11-yard completion from Mariota to receiver Eric Decker on third and nine.

But the Titans wouldn’t score again.

The Cardinals cut the lead to 7-3 on a 47-yard field goal by kicker Phil Dawson.

After a fake punt – Tennessee’s Eric Weems was stopped short of a first down on a 4th and 1 – the Cardinals had a big chance to take the lead. But after driving to the Tennessee three-yard line, Titans defensive lineman Karl Klug stopped running back Kerwynn Williams for a two-yard loss on third-and-1, and the Cardinals settled for another Dawson field goal, this one from 23 yards, to make it 7-6.

With the Titans driving late in the third quarter, Mariota was intercepted by Cardinals cornerback Tramon Williams on a throw intended for receiver Rishard Mathews.

The Titans then caught a break early in the fourth quarter when Dawson missed right from 40 yards, and it kept the game 7-6. But after the Titans went three-and-out on offense, the Cardinals drove the field again and took a 9-7 lead on a 32-yard field goal by Dawson with 5:59 left.

After a Mariota interception – his second of the game – Dawson added another field goal to make it 12-7 with 3:45 left.

The Titans had chances after that, but couldn’t get anything going on offense.

Murray finished the game with 34 yards on 11 carries, while Henry had 20 yards on eight carries.

A 58-yard field goal by Titans kicker Ryan Succop was just short on the final play of the first half.

The Titans travel to face the San Francisco 49ers next Sunday.

Preds Fall to Las Vegas in Shootout

Malcolm Subban made 41 saves and then turned aside six skaters in the shootout as the Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Nashville Predators by a 4-3 final on Friday night at Bridgestone Arena.

It’s a rare loss at home for the Preds – just their third of the season – in their first-ever meeting with Vegas, but on a night that saw the home team come back in the third period to earn a point in the standings, there was still reason stay positive following the contest.

“I really liked our game,” Nashville Head Coach Peter Laviolette said. “I liked the way we fought back, and I thought we were doing a lot of good things… I think for the most part, I thought we played a pretty solid, 60-minute game.”

“I thought we played hard,” Predators Captain Roman Josi said. “They are a good team. They play fast. We showed a lot of character coming back, and I think the guys worked hard. There are definitely things we could have done better; we had a lead again and we have to find a way to protect it. But overall, I thought the guys played hard, and they are a good hockey team over there.”

Vegas exited the first period with a 1-0 lead, courtesy of William Karlsson, and then former Preds winger James Neal made it 2-0 with a score in his first game back in Nashville after spending the past three seasons with the Preds. But before the second stanza was out, Calle Jarnkrok finished off a nifty passing play from Filip Forsberg and Pontus Aberg to get the Predators on the board by beating P.K. Subban’s brother, Malcolm, for Nashville’s first of the night.

In the third, Viktor Arvidsson and Nick Bonino scored to give the Preds their first lead of the evening, but Erik Haula tied it for Vegas with 40 seconds to play in regulation to force overtime and then a shootout. It took six rounds to finally decide things as Reilly Smith beat Pekka Rinne for the win.

“I think the main thing, no matter what the score is, is that we have go to stick to the plan and you have to keep playing the same way,” Josi said. “If you are trailing, you can go for all or nothing plays… I think the main thing is just sticking to the plan and playing the same way.”

Nashville’s first look at Vegas left the Preds impressed with their opponents, a matchup with two clubs who possess plenty of speed and skill.

“They have a lot of fast players and they are a good team,” Josi said. “There’s a reason for them to be that high up in the standings; it’s not just a fluke.”

Ultimately, Nashville still has points in four-straight games, and by hitting the 40-point mark, they sit even with St. Louis for first in the Central Division. It’s a total they’ll try to add to when they play Wednesday to begin a Western Canadian swing, a chance to build on Friday’s efforts.

“I feel like we didn’t get frustrated, and we just kept going,” Arvidsson said. “We’ve scored a lot of goals this season and [we] have confidence in the team.”

Notes:

Prior to Friday’s game, Nashville recalled goaltender Anders Lindback from Milwaukee and assigned Juuse Saros. The Predators also placed forward Ryan Johansen on Injured Reserve.

Viktor Arvidsson is now two points away from 100 in his NHL career.

Now that they’ve completed a stretch of 13 games in 25 days, the Preds will now see four days between contests before heading to Western Canada. Nashville faces Vancouver on Wednesday of next week before making stops in Edmonton and Calgary.

Coffee County Central High School senior outfielder/pitcher Raven Rogers has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her softball career at Martin Methodist College.  In a ceremony at CHS, Rogers was surrounded by family and coaches from her career as she inked the scholarship with the Pulaski college.

When asked why she chose Martin, Rogers was quick to point out the facilities and her previous experience in playing for assistant coach Case Bradley and some of her future teammates in the Comets fastpitch travel organization.  “I really loved the campus and it is not too far from home” said Rogers as she is expected to compete for a starting position in the outfield.  Raven was quick to thank “God, my mom and dad, Haley Hinshaw and Coach Glenn Bradley” for helping her reach this milestone.

“Raven is a very versatile player and that versatility should benefit her at Martin” said Coffee County coach Brandon McWhorter.   Coach McWhorter went on to say that her offensive and defensive tool sets will be an asset to the Red Hawks program.  Rogers becomes the 2nd Lady Raider softball player of the Class of 2018 to sign a letter of intent this school year.  When asked about that accomplishment, Coach McWhorter emphasized that high school athletics is part of the mission in preparing young people for life.  “Our goal is to help them develop athletically and help them in the recruiting process so they are able to achieve their reams” added McWhorter.

The Red Hawks of Martin Methodist are coached by Brandie Paul and compete in the Southern States Athletic Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics(NAIA).
