CHS Softball Drops Non-District Game at Warren County

Coffee County Lady Raider softball team traveled to McMinnville on Tuesday to take on Warren County.  Coming off a district win on Monday, the Lady Raiders took on the Lady Pioneers in their first non-district game of the year.  Despite outhitting Warren County 6 to 4, the Lady Raiders fell by a final score of 3 to 1.

The Lady Raiders got on the board in the top of the 1st inning as Katie Rutledge singled, was sacrificed to 2nd base and scored on a single from Lauren Tomberlin.  Coffee County was able to get baserunners on base in 5 of the 7 innings but were unable to get the clutch hit in the loss.

With her RBI single, Tomberlin was named the Crazy Daisies Player of the game.  Haley Richarson got the start for the Lady Raiders and took the hard luck loss as she surrendered 3 hits while striking out 2 in 4 innings of work.

The Lady Raiders are back on the diamond on Thursday when they travel to Lawrenceburg to take on Lawrence County in a district game.  First pitch is set for 5:30 PM at Lawrence County High School.

CCMS Softball Falls at Harris

Kiya Ferrell of CCMS softball

Trying to shake off a disappointing loss last week, the Coffee Middle School softball team traveled to Harris on Tuesday.  Taking on the Eaglettes in a conference game, the Lady Raiders were held to 4 hits on the cold night as they surrendered 2 unearned runs.  Those runs were enough to drop Coffee Middle by a final score of 3 to 2.

The Lady Raiders got on the board in the top of the first inning as Kiya Ferrell led off with a single, stole 2nd and 3rd base and scored on a single from Chloe Gannon.  Harris notched an unearned run in the bottom of the first to tie the game and added 1 more in a 2 run 2nd inning to forge a 3 to 1 lead.  Coffee County was able to add a run in the 3rd inning as Ferrell singled and came around to score again.

Ferrell finished with 2 singles and both Lady Raider runs.  Gannon and Olivia Evans each added singles for Coffee County.  Emily Schuster got the start in the circle for Coffee County and took the hard luck loss as Harris managed only 2 hits in the game.

Coffee Middle will play host to Harris on Thursday in game #2 of the season series.  This is a makeup of Monday’s game and will begin at 5:30 PM.

Rinne Makes 32 Saves as Predators Beat Jets 3-1

Pekka Rinne

Pekka Rinne made 32 saves and the surging Nashville Predators scored two short-handed goals in beating the Winnipeg Jets 3-1 on Tuesday night to tie for the top spot in the NHL standings.

Kevin Fiala, Austin Watson and Viktor Arvidsson had the goals for Nashville, which has won 11 of 12.

The Predators reached 100 points in 69 games, the fastest mark in franchise history. The defending Western Conference champions are even with Eastern Conference-leading Tampa Bay — and Nashville has played one fewer game.

Kyle Connor scored for the Jets, losers of three straight. Winnipeg fell eight points behind the first-place Predators in the Central Division.

Nashville scored three goals before the game was nine minutes old. Playing the finale of a six-game road trip, their longest of the season, and their second game in two nights, the Jets came out sluggish against the speedy Predators.

Fiala scored the first goal at 2:48 of the opening period.

Roman Josi carried the puck up center ice before sending a pass to Kyle Turris on the right side. Turris returned the pass to Josi as he continued through the slot and he immediately fed a trailing Fiala with a backhand pass. He had an open net, and he buried a snap shot up high for his 22nd goal of the season.

Watson and Arvidsson scored short-handed goals 34 seconds apart on the same penalty kill to make it 3-0. It was the first time in Predators history that they scored short-handed twice on the same power play.

Jets coach Paul Maurice called a basketball-style timeout following Arvidsson’s goal. Following the stoppage, Connor Hellebuyck took over in goal for starter Michael Hutchinson. After the first period, the team announced that Hutchinson would not return due to an upper-body injury. Hutchinson stopped 12 of the 15 shots he faced in 8:45 of action.

Nashville poured 24 shots on the Winnipeg net in the first, its most in a period this season.

Hellebuyck made 30 saves in relief.

Connor got Winnipeg on the scoreboard at 1:08 of the third with a power-play goal when he tapped in the rebound of Blake Wheeler’s shot from the right side.

Patrik Laine picked up an assist on Connor’s goal, extending his franchise-record point streak to 13 games.

Watson also did some strong work in his defensive zone to help Rinne. With just more than eight minutes gone in the third, he cleared a puck that was headed into the net after Rinne got a piece of a shot from Laine.

NOTES: Watson’s four short-handed goals this season place him one behind NHL leader Aleksander Barkov of the Florida Panthers. … Nashville is 34-3-5 when scoring first. … Winnipeg successfully killed off all three Nashville power plays. The Jets have not allowed an opponent to score on the man advantage in five of their last six games. … Jets C Paul Stastny was a late scratch.

Opening the Brandon McWhorter era at home on Monday, the Coffee County Lady Raider softball team welcomed Franklin County to Terry Floyd Field.  In a game you heard right here on Thunder Radio, the Lady Raiders opened up against their old district rivals from Winchester.  In a game featuring cold temperatures and hot emotions, the Lady Raiders battled to a 4 to 3 win.

A 3 run 3rd inning for Coffee County seemed to set the Lady Raiders up for an easy win, but Franklin County battled back with 2 runs in the 6th inning chasing starting pitcher Keri Munn.  Coffee County used a pair of doubles in the 6th inning from Ashley Evans and Kasarah Scheller to take a 4 to 2 lead.  But Franklin County scored a run in the 7th and got the tying run on by way of a Lady Raider error before Haley Richardson could get a groundout and a strikeout for the save.

Lauren Tomberlin and Katie Rutledge were each 2 for 3 for Coffee County.  Sarah West, Raven Rogers and Scheller all finished with RBI doubles.  Tomberlin had the other RBI via a single.   Munn picked up the victory in her first ever varsity start.  West was named the Crazy Daisies Player of the Game.

The Lady Raiders are back on the diamond on Tuesday when they travel to McMinnville to take on Warren County.  First pitch is set for 5:30 PM at Warren County High School.  Thunder Radio will be on hand to bring you the action.  Lucky Knott will be on the call with the pregame show beginning at 5:15.

CHS Baseball Downs Columbia to Open Season

CHS baseball player Nathaniel Tate

Kicking off the 2018 season at Powers Field, the Coffee County CHS baseball team hosted Columbia on Monday night.  Battling brutal wind chill temperatures, and an always strong Lions program, the Red Raiders hoped to get the 2018 season off on the right foot.  Coffee County rode the arm and bat of senior Nathanial Tate to a 7 to 2 district win.

Coffee County was able to get 2 runs in the first inning on a 2 run home run by Tate to dead centerfield.  An RBI double by Tate in the 4th inning made the score 4 to 0 after Tate came around to score on an RBI single from Skylar Bratcher.  The Raiders added 3 unearned runs in the 5th inning to put the game on ice.

Tate finished with 3 hits and 3 RBI for Coffee County at the plate.  The senior also pitched 5 innings for the win striking out 9 Lion hitters.  Bratcher finished with 2 singles and 2 RBI.  Hayden Skipper and Jacob Langham each scored 2 runs for the Red Raiders.

The Red Raiders will travel to Columbia on Tuesday for the second game in this district series.  That game will get underway at 5 PM at Columbia Central High.

CHS Tennis Blanks Giles County to Open Season

Natalie Elzeer of CHS tennis

The Coffee County tennis teams opened the season at home on Monday welcoming new district rival Giles County to the Raider Academy courts.  A pair of young and talented Raider squads got off to a blazing hot start on a cold day with a pair of wins.  The Red Raiders and Lady Raiders each got 7 to 0 sweeps.

The Red Raiders won a pair of singles matches and the #2 doubles match by forfeit.  In singles play, Jayden Talley won 8 to 2, Jonah Rollman won 8 to 0 and Luke Irwin won 8 to 0.  The freshman team of Irwin and Talley blanked the Bobcat tandem 8 to 0.

The Lady Raiders captured 5 singles wins and a pair of doubles wins in their 7 to 0 girls’ victory. The Lady Raiders got singles wins from Jessica Barrera(8 to 0), Natalie Elzeer(8 to 2), Kara Roper(8 to 5), Emily Shelton(8 to 2), Wren Lawson(8 to 0) and Odalis Garcia(8 to 0).  The doubles team of Elzeer and Lawson got an 8 to 0 win while the doubles team of Barrera and Roper won 8 to 3.

The Raider netters hit the road on Thursday for a rematch with the Bobcats.  That rematch will take place in Pulaski.  First serve is set for 4 PM.

Westwood Softball Drills Cascade

Opening their home season on Monday night, the Westwood Middle School softball team hosted Cascade.  Attempting to build on a season opening romp at Riverside from last week, Westwood hosted the perennial conference power Lady Champions.  The Lady Rockets used an 8 run 1st inning to power to the 12 to 2 win in 6 innings.

Three hit batters, a pair of extra base hits and a walk were part of the huge Westwood rally in the first inning.  A Haidyn Campbell triple, an Emma Kidder double and 3 errors by Cascade gave Westwood an 8 to 1 lead after the 1st inning.  The Lady Rockets were able to add 3 more runs in the 3rd inning and end the game in the 6th with a single run.

Campbell went the distance in the circle with 10 strikeouts to get the win.  Campbell and Kidder each finished with 2 RBI as they had the only extra base hits for Westwood.  Paisley Campbell, Brooklyn Blake and Emmalise Raymer each added a single for the Lady Rockets who improved to 2 and 0 on the year.

The Lady Rockets will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Fayetteville for a makeup game. First pitch is set for 5:30 PM.

Westwood Baseball Topples Huntland

Brady Nugent of Westwood baseball[File Photo]

Trying to open the season with 4 straight wins, the Westwood Middle School baseball hosted Huntland on Monday night.  Timely hitting and good pitching have lifted the young Rockets to 3 straight victories to open the 2018 season.  Against Huntland, the script stayed the same as Westwood battled to a 5 to 2 win.

The Rockets scored 3 runs in the first inning as the first 4 batters pounded out hits.  Westwood added 2 more runs in the 2nd when Trent Thompson drove in a pair of runs with a 2 out single.   Thompson also got the start on the mound for the Rockets as he picked up the win.

Thompson finished the game with a single and a double.  Brady Nugent and Luke Beachboard each had a pair of hits and scored twice.  The win gives the Rockets a 3 and 0 record in the conference.

The Rockets will be back in action on Tuesday for a rematch with the Hornets.  That game will take place in Huntland as the 2nd game in the season series.  First pitch is set for 5 PM.
