HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Raiders start, finish strong to take down Tullahoma

Coffee County never trailed against visiting Tullahoma Friday night.
The Red Raiders jumped out to a red hot start – taking a 11-0 lead – and fought off multiple Tullahoma runs to take a 50-36 win over the Wildcats at Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gym in Manchester.
Tullahoma eventually overcame the early start and tied the game at 24-24. Both teams went back and forth until 35-35, but the Wildcats never took the lead. And it was all Raiders from there, who closed on a 14-1 run down the stretch.
Three Raiders got into double figures. Dayne Crosslin scored 11 points, Phineas Rollman and Connor Shemwell each with 10. Shemwell scored 8 in the first half to get the Raiders off to a good start. Rollman was named Thunder Radio’s Stone Fort Mortgage Player of the Game.
CHS closed strong – not missing any free throws down the stretch. Brady Nugent was 4-of-4 at the line in the fourth quarter. The Raiders had their best night of the season at the charity stripe, going 15-of-19.
Tullahoma was led by Krys Uselton with 17. He scored the first 10 points on the night for the Wildcats. Coffee County held him to just 7 points after that.
The win makes four wins in the past 5 games for the Raiders and improves them to 8-4. They play next week in the Sonic Shootout in Sparta.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Gannon pounds Tullahoma into submission, Lady Raiders roll 54-36

It was only a matter of time before Chloe Gannon’s shots started to fall Friday night.
They did, Tullahoma had no answers and the Central High School Lady Raiders beat Tullahoma for the 12th time in the past 13 meetings: 54-36 at Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gymnasium.
“We knew if we executed the game plan that we had that we would take care of business,” explained CHS head coach Joe Pat Cope. “We didn’t do that early, and it was so frustrating for me. We had a discussion at halftime and things improved.”
Improve they did. Coffee County struggled through the first half, but still took a 21-20 lead to the locker room. Foul trouble haunted the Lady Raiders early – Chloe Gannon and Channah Gannon each picked up 3 fouls in the first half.
But Cope put Chloe Gannon right back on the floor to start the second half and she went to work – not picking up a foul the rest of the night and finishing with a game-high 24 points (17 of those came in the second half).
The Lady Raiders turned up the defensive intensity, as well – holding the Lady Cats to just 6 third quarter points.
Senior Elli Chumley also turned in a solid performance – playing shutdown defense on Tullahoma’s top guard Lucy Nutt, and scoring 14 points on the offensive end. And in Jalie Ruehling’s first start of the year, she put up 8 points for the Lady Raiders, including a 3-pointer. It was one of only two 3-pointers CHS hit all night, with the other coming from Olivia Vinson.
But the 3-pointer wasn’t needed – size and dominant post play was the emphasis of the night for the Lady Raiders.
With the win, CHS moves to 7-3 on the year. It marks the Lady Raiders’ 4th straight win. Tullahoma falls to 5-2 – it is the Lady Cats’ second straight loss.
Coffee County will play next week in a pre-Christmas Tournament in Fort Payne, Ala.

BASKETBALL: Coffee Middle splits on the road with East
A first-half shutout in basketball is rare. But that is exactly what the Coffee County Middle defense did to East Tullahoma Thursday night – taking a 27-0 lead into halftime as the Lady Raiders cruised to a 44-11 win.
It was a marked improvement over a team that scored 41 against CMS earlier this year.
“We made some changes this week to our defense and it worked Monday and tonight,” said CMS head coach David Vinson.
Eighth grader Natalie Barnes turned in an 18-point performance and sixth grader Adalyn Clark pitched in 11. Ella Arnold scored 8
The Lady Raiders move to 14-2 with the win and 8-1 in CTC play. They won’t play again until after the Christmas break.
Meanwhile, the Raider boys struggled again to find offense and lost a 44-12 decision to the Panthers. Luke Campbell and Levi Rollman each scored 3 points for CMS. The Raider boys fall to 3-11 with the loss.
BASKETBALL: Ferrell lights up Eagleville with 28 points in WMS blowout
Lady Rocket Jules Ferrell had herself a memorable Thursday night.
Eagleville will have nightmares about it.
The seventh grade guard piled up 28 points – 17 in the second quarter alone – to lead the Westwood Lady Rockets to a 47-19 conference beatdown of visiting Eagleville at Joel Vinson Gymnasium.
Westwood really took the game over in the second quarter. Leading 6-1 after a period, Westwood outscored Eagleville 21-2 in the second frame to put the game away by halftime.
The win improves the Lady Rockets to 17-1 on the year and a perfect 11-0 in conference play. They won’t play again until after the Christmas break.
Audri Patton also scored in double-figures for WMS Thursday with 11 points. Reece Finch added 4, Maddie Meacham 2, Bella VanZandbergen 2
The Westwood boys weren’t so fortunate, dropping a decision to the Eagles to fall to 6-11 overall, 6-5 in conference play.

The freshman guard started filling up the basket in the first quarter and didn’t let up, piling up a high-school career high 24 points to lead the Coffee County Lady Raiders to a 67-33 win over the visiting Bobcats of Pickett County.
“The ball kept going in so I just kept shooting it,” said Vinson, who was named Thunder Radio’s Stone Fort Mortgage Player of the Game. “I feel like, as a team, we all get along so well on and off the court and it is showing in how we play.”
Vinson scored 21 in the first half and added 3 more in the second half. She started 6-of-6 beyond the arc before finally missing a shot late in the third quarter. She was 2-of-2 at the free-throw line.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Coffee splits on the road with Walker Valley
CHS Lady Raiders 65, Walker Valley 31
What had the makings to be a “trap game” turned into a typical night for the Coffee County Central Lady Raiders.
CHS traveled two hours to Walker Valley and put a whipping on the Mustangs, leaving with a 65-31 mercy-rule shortened game to complete the season sweep.
Chloe Gannon with 19 points and Jalie Ruehling with 8 points and 7 rebounds were named Stone Fort Mortgage co-players of the game on the Thunder Radio broadcast.
But it was the defense that made the difference. CHS only led 19-11 after one quarter. But more defensive pressure frustrated Walker Valley. CHS held the Mustangs to just 4 points in the second quarter and 1 in the third. In fact, Walker Valley didn’t score an offensive field goal for the first 10 minutes of the second half.
Olivia Vinson buried a trio of 3-pointers to finish with 9 points and senior Elli Chumley also added 9 in the win. Coffee County improves to 5-3 win the win.

Raiders 49, Walker Valley 62
A bad second quarter was costly for CHS.
The Raiders led 15-11 late in the first quarter over Walker Valley Monday night, Dec. 13, 2021, but a 23-4 Walker Valley run closed the half and made too big of a hole for the Raiders to climb back.
CHS cut the deficit to 5 points twice in the second half but never got any closer.
Connor Shemwell had a big night for the Raiders – piling up 20 points, including three 3-pointers. Dayne Crosslin pitched in 10.
The Raiders fall to 6-4 with the loss and suffer a season sweep at the hands of Walker Valley.
Both CHS teams will return home Tuesday to host good Pickett County teams. Tip at 6 p.m. and you can hear them both on Thunder Radio: 107.9 FM, 106.7 FM, 1320 AM, Manchester Go app and Thunder1320.com.
