Lady Raider Softball Drubs Lincoln County

Needing a win on Monday for district seeding purposes, the Coffee County Central High School softball team hit the road to Fayetteville to take on Lincoln County.  The Lady Raiders erupted for 9 runs in the 6th inning to capture a huge 14 to 3 win.

After taking a 2 to nothing lead in the 2nd inning, Coffee County fell behind the Lady Falcons 3 to 2 entering the 4th inning.  The Lady Raiders got 3 runs in the 4th inning before exploding for 9 runs in the 6th to shorten the game due to the Mercy Rule.  Coffee County banged out 15 hits on the game.

Haley Richardson led the hit parade for Coffee County as she was 3 for 4 on the night with 4 RBI including a 2 run home run in the 6th inning.  Katie Rutledge was 3 for 5 on the night with a triple and an RBI.  Ashley Evans had a triple, 2 singles and scored 3 times.  Keri Munn was 2 for 4 at the plate with 2 singles and an RBI.  Munn also took the win in the circle as she scattered 7 hits and allowed 2 earned runs with 3 strikeouts.

The Lady Raiders will close out the regular season on Tuesday night at home.  Coffee County welcomes Tullahoma to Terry Floyd Field for a varsity only contest.  First pitch is set for 6 PM.

Raider Baseball Falls to Riverdale

Hayden Skipper of CHS baseball

Traveling to Murfreesboro on Monday, the Red Raider baseball tangled with Riverdale.  Despite back to back home runs from Hayden Skipper and Nathanial Tate in the 5th inning, the Red Raiders fell to the Warriors 6 to 4.

Coffee County struck first getting a run in the 1st inning on a Tate single as he scored Skipper who had doubled.  Riverdale knotted the game in the 2nd and broke the game open with a 4 run 3rd inning.  Coffee County added a run in the 4th with 2 outs as they got 3 walks and a hit batter.  In the 5th, Skipper and Tate hit the first 2 pitches of the inning out of the park but the Raiders could not get any closer to Riverdale.

Tate finished the game with 2 singles, a home run and 2 RBI.  Skipper had a double, a home run an RBI and 2 runs scored.  Scottie Duke took the loss on the mound as he threw 3 innings giving up 1 earned run.

The Red Raiders will conclude the regular season on Tuesday when they play host to Forrest at Powers Field.  First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 PM.  Tuesday night will also be Senior Night.  Senior Night festivities will get underway at 5.

Westwood Baseball Season Comes to a Close

The Westwood baseball season came to an end on Monday in the Duck River Valley Conference baseball tournament at Liberty.  A short-handed Rocket squad put up a valiant fight but could not claim the upset falling to Liberty 7 to 2.

Batting first as the lower seed, Liberty got on the board in the top of the first inning with a pair of runs and held the 2 to 0 lead through 4 innings.  In the 5th, the Patriots tacked on 3 more runs to build a 5 to 0 cushion.  Two more runs in the 6th put Westwood in a 7 to 0 hole with 6 outs remaining.   As has been the case all season, Westwood battled back scoring a pair of runs in the 6th inning but could get no closer.

Blake Hale and Trenton Thompson led the Rockets offensively as each got on board twice and each scored a run.  Brady Nugent and Jonathan Nelson each reached base safely two times as well.

Coach Dustin Hereford, along with members from the Westwood Middle School baseball team, will be guests on Saturday’ Coffee Coaches Show to talk about the season.  The Coffee Coaches Show is heard live each Saturday from 10 to 11 AM HERE on Thunder Radio.  The Coffee Coaches Show is broadcast from the showroom of Al White Ford/Lincoln.

Sounds Routed by Sky Sox in Series Opener

The Nashville Sounds were trounced 17-3 by the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in Monday night’s series opener. The Sky Sox scored 14 runs in the first three innings and coasted the rest of the way to the victory.

Dustin Fowler stayed hot for the Sounds, going 4-for-5 on the night for his team-leading 10th multi-hit game of the season and second straight game with at least three hits. For the second game in a row he came within one hit of completing the cycle. Fowler ripped a two-run double in the third inning to put Nashville on the board. He also singled in the fifth and ninth innings and tripled in the seventh.

After not pitching for nearly two weeks, Sounds starter Chris Bassitt struggled in his first start of the season. The Sky Sox pounced on him early as they took advantage of a wild pitch to score a run in the first inning. Then in the second inning they erupted for six runs as they batted around. The first four batters all reached base and came around to score. The six-run frame was highlighted by Ji-Man Choi’s two-run blast off the batter’s eye in straightaway center field. 10 batters came to the plate for Colorado Springs in the third inning against Raul Alcantara and Jake Sanchez as the Sky Sox scored seven more runs to extend their lead to 14-2.

Bassitt lasted just two innings while Alcantara went just 2/3 of an inning. Both right-handers surrendered seven runs on seven hits. Sanchez and Bobby Wahl also took the mound for Nashville on the night. With the bullpen short on available arms, infielders Slade Heathcott and Steve Lombardozzi were pressed into pitching duty for the first time in their careers. Heathcott tossed a scoreless seventh inning with one strikeout while Lombardozzi allowed one run on two hits with a walk and a strikeout in his inning of relief. Heathcott and Lombardozzi became the second and third position players to pitch for the Sounds this season, joining Melvin Mercedes who did so on April 21 at Omaha.

The Sounds continue a four-game series against the Sky Sox Tuesday night. Right-hander Kendall Graveman (0-0, 0.00) starts for Nashville against right-hander Freddy Peralta (4-1, 4.01) for Colorado Springs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 p.m. CST.

Post-Game Notes

  • With Monday’s 17-3 loss, the Sounds dropped to 12-12 on the season.
  • The 17 runs allowed and 20 hits surrendered were both single-game highs allowed by the Sounds’ pitching staff.
  • By allowing 17 earned runs, the Sounds’ pitching staff missed out on posting the franchise’s lowest ERA in a month since MLBAM began producing monthly stats in 2005. The Sounds finish the month of April with a 3.30 ERA. The Sounds entered the night with an ERA of 2.67, which would have been the lowest in a month since 2005.
  • The Sounds used two position players on the mound in a game for the first time since May 28, 2017 when Chris Parmelee and Ryan Lavarnway both took the mound in game one of a doubleheader against Colorado Springs.
  • The game lasted three hours and 33 minutes, the longest nine-inning game of the season.

The 2018 season is the Sounds’ 41st in franchise history and fourth as the Oakland Athletics’ top affiliate. Single-game tickets are available now by calling (615) 690-4487 or by visiting www.nashvillesounds.com.
