Nashville SC to Host U.S. Open Cup Game Tonight

The Nashville Soccer Club will host the Mississippi Brilla of the Premier Development League on Wednesday at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. The 7:30 PM game is a 3rd round matchup in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tournament. The Nashville Soccer Club, of the United Soccer League, advanced to the 3rd round with a 2 nil win last Wednesday over Inter Nashville of the National Premier Soccer League.
The U.S. Open Cup features a total of 94 participating teams from all levels of American soccer. The tournament uses a tiered bracket and eight rounds of single-elimination play until a champion is crowned in September.
A total of 52 Open Division teams (clubs from the Premier Development League, National Premier Soccer League, and those advancing from three rounds of local qualifying played between September and November of 2017) entered the First Round on May 9. Twenty-two clubs from the professional Division II United Soccer League (USL) entered the action in the 2nd Round on May 16. The Third Round takes place on May 23, and will send its winners up against 20 Division I MLS clubs in the Fourth Round on June 6. In a format change, a new Fourth Round Draw will be held May 24 to determine these 4th round matchups.
The first U.S. Open Cup was played in 1914, making it the oldest cup competition for soccer in the United States and the country’s oldest annual tournament for team sports. While professional soccer came and went in various forms and incarnations, at various stages of the 20th century, the Open Cup crowned a champion for each of the last 104 years. The winner of the U.S. Open Cup qualifies directly for the CONCACAF Champions League.

Sounds Upend Sky Sox for Second Straight Victory

The Nashville Sounds edged the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 4-2 Tuesday night after an hour and ten minute rain delay to start the game.

Chris Bassitt had arguably his strongest outing of the season on the mound for the Sounds. He fanned two batters in each of his first three innings and finished his night with a season-high seven punch outs. In five innings of work allowed just one run on six hits.

The Sounds took advantage of Sky Sox starter Corbin Burnes’ inability to find the strike zone in the fourth inning. Burnes walked BJ Boyd and Franklin Barreto to start the inning, then retired the next two batters. With two outs Josh Phegley yanked a double down the left field line to plate a pair of runs and break the scoreless tie.

Colorado Springs cut the lead in half in the top of fifth inning as Eric Sogard hit a two-out single back up the middle.

Nashville reestablished it’s two run lead in the sixth inning when Barreto launched a solo home run to lead off the frame. The Sounds then added to their lead in the seventh inning without a hit. Jorge Mateo and Nick Martini each drew walks and Boyd laid down a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt to advance the runners up 90 feet. A sacrifice fly from Steve Lombardozzi brought home Mateo to extend the lead to 4-1.

Jeremy Bleich and Bobby Wahl shut down the Sky Sox in the final four innings. Bleich twirled three shutout innings of two-hit baseball while Wahl stepped in and allowed a run but picked up a save for the second consecutive night. It was Wahl’s fourth save of the season.

Game three of the four-game series is scheduled for Wednesday night at First Tennessee Park. Left-hander Eric Jokisch (1-5, 5.44) starts for Nashville against right-hander Alex Asher (2-1, 3.66) for Colorado Springs. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Laureano Leads Sounds to Win in Triple-A Debut

Ramon Laureano put together a perfect night at the plate to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 5-4 win over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in front of 6,321 fans at First Tennessee Park Monday night.

The right fielder began the season on the disabled list after suffering an injury in spring training. Laureano hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning, singled and scored a run in the fourth, and belted a solo homer in the sixth.

Laureano’s sacrifice fly opened the scoring and was quickly followed by Sheldon Neuse’s run-scoring double to give Nashville a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth, it was Laureano’s single that sparked a two-out rally. After Neuse walked to load the bases, shortstop Jorge Mateo sent a base hit into center field that scored two runs to make it a 4-0 game.

Also making his Triple-A debut, right-hander Matt Milburn worked through the first four innings without a hitch. Colorado Springs got to him in the fifth and brought the game to within a run at 4-3. Reliever J.B. Wendelken struck out a pair of batters in the fifth to limit the damage to three runs in the frame.

It was the bullpen trio of Wendelken, Dean Kiekhefer and Bobby Wahl that shut it down the rest of the way. Wendelken tossed two scoreless innings, Kiekhefer followed with 1 2/3 shutout innings and Wahl worked the ninth to earn his third save of the season. The three combined for nine strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

CHS Softball Season Comes to an End

The Cinderella run for the Lady Raider softball team came to an end on Friday night in the sectional round of the TSSAA playoffs.  Coffee County was denied a 2nd straight state tournament appearance at the hands of Walker Valley before an overflow crowd at Terry Floyd Field.  A huge 7th inning rally by Walker Valley saw Coffee County fall by a final score of 8 to 5.

In a game that was delayed 84 minutes due to a rain, each team got off to a solid start.  Walker Valley got on the board first with 2 runs in the 3rd inning.  The teams traded runs as Coffee County entered the bottom of the 6th inning trailing 4 to 2.  As has been the case all through postseason, the Lady Raiders had the big comeback rally in the 6th inning as they strung together 3 hits and got the benefit of a hit batter and a Walker Valley error to plate 3 runs and take a 5 to 4 lead into the 7th.  After Keri Munn got her 7th strikeout to start the inning, Walker Valley used 5 hits and some shaky Lady Raider defense to tally 4 runs in the 7th.  Haley Richardson got a one out double to in the bottom of the 7th to bring up Kasarah Scheller.  Scheller hit a screaming line drive up the middle that was deflected by the Walker Valley pitcher into the glove of the 2nd baseman allowing Walker Valley to turn the game ending double play.

Ashley Evans finished the game with a single, a triple, 2 runs scored, an RBI and an outfield assist as she was named the Crazy Daisies player of the game.  Haley Richardson led the Lady Raiders in hitting as she had 3 singles and a run scored.  Sarah West finished the game with a pair of singles and an RBI while Keri Munn laced a double.

Coffee County will end the season with a final record of 21 and 20.  The Lady Raiders also captured a District 8AAA title and a Region 4AAA title.  Coach Brandon McWhorter, along with seniors Lauren Tomberlin, Tatum Baldwin and Kasarah Scheller were guests on Saturday’s Coffee Coaches Show and talked about the season.  You can download the Coffee Coaches Show at: http://www.podcastgarden.com/episode/coffee-coaches-show_128029

Sounds Pummeled By Dodgers in Road Trip Finale

The Nashville Sounds stranded a season-high 13 runners on base and went 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position as they dropped their road trip finale to the Oklahoma City Dodgers 11-2 Sunday afternoon.

A pitching duel was brewing through the first three innings but the Oklahoma City Dodgers scored in each of the middle three innings while the Sounds squandered their chances to light up the scoreboard. The Sounds left the bases loaded in both the fifth and seventh innings and went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts with the all three bases occupied. Nashville put the first two batters on base in the eighth inning but a strikeout by Sheldon Neuse and a double play by Jorge Mateo ended the threat.

Sounds starter Frankie Montas cruised through the first three innings including a six-pitch second frame. He hit a snag, however in the fourth inning. Donovan Solano ripped a line drive home run to dead center to lead off the inning. Kyle Farmer followed Solano’s home run with a base hit and came around to score along with Travis Taijeron on a two-run single from Kyle Garlick.

The Sounds got a run back in the fourth but missed out on a golden opportunity for more. Nashville loaded the bases with just one out but only a walk to Barreto sandwiched between a pair of strikeouts was able to plate a run for the Sounds. With Nick Martini on third base, Barreto grounded out to third to score a consolation run in the ninth but that would be all the offense the Sounds would be able to find on the day.

The Dodgers put together a two-out rally that netted a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Three straight singles highlighted by Taijeron’s two-run base knock pushed the Dodgers’ lead to 5-1. Oklahoma City’s Jake Peter took Nashville’s Raul Alcantara deep in the sixth inning. The Dodgers then gave Nashville’s Joseph Camacho a rude welcome to the Triple-A level in the eighth inning as they plated five runs including a solo blast from Taijeron and a three-run homer from Peter.

The Sounds welcome the Colorado Springs Sky Sox to Nashville the four-game series beginning Monday night at First Tennessee Park. Right-hander Daniel Gossett (4-0, 1.63) starts for Nashville against right-hander Aaron Wilkerson (0-0, 2.84) for Colorado Springs. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Post-Game Notes

Sounds Doubled Up By Dodgers

The strikeout bug bit the Nashville Sounds Saturday night as they fell to the Oklahoma City Dodgers 4-2. Sounds batters struck out 16 times to set a new season-high.

The Sounds were unable to muster anything offensively against Oklahoma City starter Dennis Santana. The pitching prospect, making his Triple-A debut, mowed through the Sounds lineup, striking out 11 batters in six innings to match a career-high. Santana’s counterpart on the mound, Naile, took a tough luck loss after tossing his fourth quality start of the season. He allowed three runs but just one was earned in his seven innings of work. Naile retired the final 10 batters he faced.

Nashville did not waste any time lighting up the scoreboard once Santana’s night was finished. Anthony Garcia was hit by a pitch from relief pitcher C.C. Lee to begin the seventh inning, then Smolinski crushed his first home run of the season to pull the Sounds within a run.

Oklahoma City took an early lead as leadoff man Tim Locastro singled and swiped second base to begin the game. Travis Taijeron then cracked a base hit to bring Locastro around to score.

The Dodgers added a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Henry Ramos reached on a costly error by third baseman Sheldon Neuse. Kyle Garlick then singled up the middle and Ramos advanced to third on a heads-up baserunning play. Garlick moved up to second base on the throw. Jake Peter rewarded to aggressive baserunning by driving them both in to score with a base hit to push the lead to 3-0.

After Smolinski’s two-run home run in the seventh inning the Dodgers added an insurance run in the eighth inning off Jeremy Bleich. Breyvic Valera tripled to begin the frame and Donovan Solano’s double brought him home.

Trailing 4-2 in the ninth inning, the Sounds brought the tying run to the plate. Franklin Barreto was plunked by Joe Broussard to leadoff the inning but he was left stranded on first base as the next three batters were retired in order.

The Sounds and Dodgers conclude the four-game series Sunday afternoon in Oklahoma City. Right-hander Frankie Montas (1-4, 3.75) starts for Nashville against right-hander Guillermo Moscoso (1-2, 3.66) for Oklahoma City. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.

Post-Game Notes

  • With tonight’s 4-2 loss, the Sounds dropped to 21-20 on the season.
  • Tonight was the fourth time this season the Sounds lost with the opportunity to go three games over .500.
  • Nick Martini was ejected after arguing a strikeout call in the sixth inning. He became the first Sounds player or coach to be ejected this season.
  • Nick Martini extended his consecutive on-base streak to 29 games when he singled to lead off the fourth inning. Since April 14, Martini has reached safely in every game he has played in.
  • Sheldon Neuse has now struck out in 20 consecutive games. He has had a plate appearance in 38 games and has struck out at least once in 35 of them.
  • James Naile induced 13 groundouts, the most by any Sounds pitcher this season. He notched his team-high fourth quality start and tossed seven innings for the fourth time in 2018.
