Sounds Fall to Express, Settle for Series Split

The Nashville Sounds squandered numerous opportunities on offense as they were edged by the Round Rock Express 3-2 Thursday night at First Tennessee Park. The Sounds went 1-for-19 with runners in scoring position on the night.

Daniel Mengden was once again outstanding for the Sounds. The right-hander twirled his fifth quality start in his last six with six shutout innings of four-hit baseball. He walked one and fanned six on the night. Offensively the Sounds scattered eight hits but were unable to cross the plate against Round Rock starter Adrian Sampson in his 5 2/3 innings of work.

Round Rock pounced on their opportunity to face someone other than Mengden as Chris Hatcher entered in the seventh. The Express put up three runs in the frame on a two-run triple from Nick Noonan and a double from Drew Robinson.

The Sounds put the lead off man on base in seven of the nine innings but were ultimately were unable to take advantage of those opportunities. Nashville finally broke through in the eighth inning with a pair of runs thanks to an error by Round Rock left fielder Scott Heineman. With runners on first and second BJ Boyd poked a base hit through the left side and into left field. Heineman let the ball get through his legs allowing Sheldon Neuse and Beau Taylor to score. The Sounds put at least one runner on base in all nine innings.

The Sounds begin a three-game series against the New Orleans Baby Cakes Friday night at First Tennessee Park. Left-hander Eric Jokisch (4-9, 4.44) starts for the Sounds against right-hander Tyler Cloyd (4-4, 5.98) for the Baby Cakes. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Sounds’ Winning Streak Snapped at 15 Games

The Nashville Sounds’ winning streak came to a halt at 15 games as the Round Rock Express snapped it with a 3-1 win in front of 8,453 fans and 702 dogs at First Tennessee Park Wednesday night.

The 2018 Sounds team will share the longest winning streak in franchise history with the 1999 Sounds team that won 15 straight games June 2-20.

Round Rock made several stellar defensive plays throughout the night and limited Nashville’s recently red-hot offense to one run on nine hits. Among Round Rock’s defensive gems was a diving catch by left fielder Scott Heineman to take away extra bases from Bruce Maxwell in the seventh, and a diving stop by second baseman Christian Lopes to take a hit away from Steve Lombardozzi in the eighth.

Boog Powell and Nashville’s offense got off to a great start when Powell started the bottom of the first with a single to left field. Steve Lombardozzi followed with a single of his own, as did Anthony Garcia to load the bases. Nashville took a 1-0 lead on Franklin Barreto‘s sacrifice fly.

Round Rock bounced back immediately and tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second. Nick Torres bounced a run-scoring single off Sounds starter Chris Bassitt into right field to even the game.

It stayed that way until the sixth when Express catcher Juan Centeno sliced a double down the left field line to score Andy Ibanez with the go-ahead run. Round Rock added a run in the seventh when Drew Robinson drilled a solo homer off reliever Ryan Dull.

The Sounds didn’t muster much offense in the later innings aren’t weren’t able to trim the 3-1 deficit. Sheldon Neuse tripled in the sixth and BJ Boyd had a two-out single in the ninth, but those were the only two hits for Nashville over the final five innings.

The fourth and final game of the series is scheduled for Thursday night at First Tennessee Park. Right-hander Daniel Mengden (4-1, 3.82) starts for the Sounds against right-hander Adrian Sampson (5-4, 4.33) for the Express. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Morgan Henley of CHS soccer

The Coffee County CHS soccer team opened their district slate on Tuesday when they traveled to Fayetteville to take on Lincoln County.  Coming off a 7 goal performance on Monday, the Lady Raiders were slow getting their offense on track against the talented Lady Falcons.  Coffee County had to rally with 2 goals in the 2nd half to draw with Lincoln County at 2

The Red Raider football team of Coffee County Middle School welcomed Lake Forest Middle out of Cleveland to Manchester on Tuesday night.  The Raider defense did a magnificent job holding the vaunted Bruins offense to 76 yards of total offense.  Unfortunately, 3 Raider turnovers spelled doom for Coffee Middle as they fell 20 to 12.

Trailing 14 to 12 at the half, it appeared the Raiders were driving for the possible winning score as the 2 teams went into the 4th quarter.  But the Bruins intercepted a Caleb Boothe pass and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown to squash the upset bid.  The Raiders finished the game with 117 yards of total offense but were unable to convert either of the 2 Lake Forest turnovers into points.

Trevor Martin led the Raiders in total yards as he rushed 16 times for 76 yards including a 1 yard touchdown run in the 1st quarter to give Coffee Middle a 6 to 0 lead.  Elijah Clemmons scored the other Raider touchdown as he raced 28 yards for a score.  Clemmons finished with 29 yards on 11 carries.  Ethan Hargrove ran a fake punt for 11 yards and a 1st down in the 3rd quarter and caught 1 pass for 8 yards.
