Sounds Stun Baby Cakes with Late Rally

The Nashville Sounds scored one run in the ninth and four in the tenth to stun the New Orleans Baby Cakes with a come-from-behind 7-3 win Tuesday night at Shrine on Airline.

Trailing 3-2 in the top of the ninth, Anthony Garcia launched a solo homer off Nick Wittgren to even the game at 3-3. It was Garcia’s second solo blast of the game – his third multi-homer game of the season.

After Liam Hendriks worked his way out of a jam to put up a zero in the bottom of the ninth, Nashville’s offense exploded in the tenth to take control of the game. Sheldon Neuse started the inning at second base and quickly scored when New Orleans shortstop Peter Mooney tried to cut him down at third on BJ Boyd’s fielder’s choice.

Mooney’s throwing error gave the Sounds a 4-3 lead and allowed Boyd second base. Jorge Mateo was hit by a pitch to put two runners on for Boog Powell who drilled an opposite-field two-run double down the left field line to give the Sounds a 6-3 advantage. Two batters later, Dustin Fowler added a run-scoring single up the middle to make it a 7-3 game.

Hendriks returned for the bottom of the 10th and struck out the side to nail down Nashville’s 70th win of the season – guaranteeing the team at least a .500 record in 2018.

Eric Jokisch started for Nashville and turned in his fourth consecutive quality start. The southpaw tossed six innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on eight hits. He walked two and struck out four.

Nashville trailed 3-0 in the seventh until Garcia and Franklin Barreto drilled back-to-back home runs to pull the Sounds within a run. Garcia has a team-high 23 home runs and Barreto is second in line with 18.

Reliver Josh Lucas bridged the gap between Jokisch and Hendriks with two scoreless relief innings.

Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for Wednesday night in New Orleans. Right-hander Carlos Ramirez (2-2, 3.44) starts for the Sounds against left-hander Dillon Peters (5-7, 6.02) for the Baby Cakes. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Nashville SC Routs Richmond, Back in Playoff Picture

After dropping a heartbreaker on Saturday night, Nashville SC had its head in the game on Tuesday as the club poured on the offense in a 4-0 win over the Richmond Kickers.

The combination of Michael Reed and Tucker Hume proved lethal with Reed tallying three assists and Hume a brace of goals, including the only goal of the first half.

90′ in a Nutshell

Nashville SC started the match with a few good chances, including a Kris Tyrpak diving header that flew just wide of the net. From there, Richmond brought the ball into the attacking third and took a few chances towards goal, all of which were punched away by Matt Pickens, including one off a redirect in front of the net. From there, the match went back and forth with both teams earning chances, including multiple Nashville SC corner kicks.

In the 41’ minute, Lebo Moloto had a brilliant chance towards goal that curled right into the goalkeeper’s hands. Minutes later, a redirected set piece fell right back to the kick-taker in Michael Reed, who lofted it back in straight to the head of Tucker Hume, who buried the chance to give Nashville SC the 1-0 lead going into halftime.

In the second half, Nashville took the offensive yet again and added another to the score sheet off yet another set piece. Reed sent another service into the box and Bradley Bourgeois got his head to it for his first Nashville SC goal to double Nashville’s lead. Almost 10 minutes later, Nashville continued to pound away, and Kosuke Kimura found the boot of Matt LaGrassa at the net-front for a third tally. The home side didn’t relent and found a fourth tally in the 60’ minute with yet another set-piece service from Reed to the head of Hume, who just put the ball passed the outstretched hands of the keeper.

Nashville held that score for the final half-hour of the match to earn a decisive 4-0 victory.

Goals

48’ NSH – Bradley Bourgeois (assisted by Michael Reed)

57’ NSH – Matt LaGrassa (assisted by Kosuke Kimura)

60’ NSH – Tucker Hume (assisted by Michael Reed)

Quotable

Defender Bradley Bourgeois

“It’s about time. That’s really it. Throughout the year, I think everyone’s kind of had that frustration, along with myself, but no one really wanted to score that goal more than me. That one was for the fans, those incredible fans that keep coming out every night and they kept telling me it’ll come, it’ll come. Mama, we did it.”

Key Stat

Three assists for Michael Reed – The Nashville SC captain was a fiend from set pieces in this one, feeding in three set piece balls that went for header goals, two of which were to Hume. His trio of assists tie a USL-best this season. The only other players in the USL to bag three assists in a game this season are LA Galaxy II’s Julian Buescher, OKC Energy FC’s Jose Barril and FC Cincinnati’s Emmanuel Ledesma.

Standings Update

With the victory, Nashville SC slides back into playoff position in seventh place in the USL Eastern Conference. The club is just two points behind Indy Eleven, but that margin could change depending on Indy’s game tomorrow night against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC.

CCMS Soccer Falls to Tullahoma

Caleigh Pratt of CCMS soccer

The young and inexperienced Lady Raider soccer team of Coffee County Middle School hosted Tullahoma on Monday afternoon.  A pair of 2nd half goals powered Tullahoma to a 3 to 1 conference win.

In a match you heard here on Thunder Radio as part of the 1st National Bank Hometown Sports Series, a pretty even first half sent the two teams to intermission with Tullahoma up top 1 to 0.  The Cats scored in the 6th minute but the teams were even in shots on goal at 4 at the half.  In the second half, Tullahoma began to wear down the Lady Raiders in the midfield as they outshot Coffee County 7 to 2.  The Cats added goals in the 34th and 57th minutes to take a 3 nil lead.  With under 2 minutes to play, 8th grader Katie Cotton dribbled from her defensive position in the defensive 3rd all the way to the top of the box and scored an unassisted goal to stave off the shutout. Caleigh Pratt had 9 saves in goal for Coffee Middle.

The Lady Raiders return home on Thursday night as they play host to South Franklin.  The evening will also be 8th Grade Night.  The match is set to get underway at 5 PM.

Sounds Blanked by Redbirds in Series Finale

The Nashville Sounds managed only four hits in a 2-0 loss to the Memphis Redbirds Monday night at AutoZone Park. With the win in the series finale, the Redbirds took three of four from the Sounds.

Dustin Fowler doubled in the first inning off Memphis starter Adam Wainwright, but that was the last extra-base hit of the night for Nashville. Jorge Mateo and Boog Powell collected singles in the third inning, and Franklin Barreto singled in the ninth.

Making a Major League rehab start, Wainwright allowed three hits in four shutout innings. He walked a pair and struck out four. After Mateo and Powell singled to put two runners on for Nashville in the third, Wainwright retired Fowler on a fly out to end the threat.

Memphis plated the only two runs of the game in the home half of the third. Nashville starter Raul Alcantara gave up a leadoff single to Randy Arozarena who promptly swiped second base. A base hit by Rangel Ravelo scored Arozarena for the first run of the game. Two batters later, Alex Mejia followed with a base hit to right-center to give the Redbirds a 2-0 lead.

Nashville’s offense never materialized against Wainwright or reliever Tyler Lyons who followed the starter with five scoreless innings in relief. The Sounds only had two at-bats with runners in scoring position, and none after the third inning.

Sounds relievers Chris Hatcher, Jeremy Bleich and J.B. Wendelken kept the game close with five scoreless innings. The trio allowed three hits while collecting three strikeouts.

Lyons earned the win and Alcantara was tagged with the loss, his sixth of the season.

The Sounds travel to New Orleans to begin a three-game series with the Baby Cakes set to begin Tuesday night. Left-hander Eric Jokisch (5-10, 4.25) starts for the Sounds against right-hander Tyler Cloyd (5-5, 5.57) for the Baby Cakes. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
