Ellis, Preds Defeat Sabres to Conclude Homestand

Ryan Ellis

No case of the Mondays here.

Ryan Ellis and Kevin Fiala scored as the Nashville Predators defeated the Buffalo Sabres, 2-1, Bridgestone Arena. It’s the final result of Nashville’s season-long, five-game homestand, giving them six out of a possible 10 points over the stretch and consecutive victories to finish things out.

In a meeting between two of the League’s top teams – with all the ingredients for a high-scoring affair – the Preds instead turned to their defensive prowess, holding the Sabres to just one goal on 22 shots, while converting two past former Nashville netminder Carter Hutton.

“We just had to get back to our game,” Ellis said. “I think they took it to us, and they were playing quicker and a little bit faster and winning some battles; it was more about what we did and obviously with some new players [in our lineup] they’re going to make some good plays. We picked it up near the end and walked away with the points.”

The Preds finished the opening 20 minutes up 1-0, courtesy of an Ellis blast on the power play for his second of the season.

After Sam Reinhart evened the score early in the middle frame, Fiala put the Predators back up by one when his shot from the left circle eluded Hutton. The strike was Fiala’s second in as many games and his third in his last four outings.

From there, Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne – appearing in his 10th consecutive game – continued to hold the Sabres off the scoresheet for the remainder of regulation, allowing one goal or less for the seventh occasion on the campaign.

“It was a great win for us,” Preds Captain Roman Josi said. “Especially the defense, we played really well. It was a huge win. They are a good team, and they’ve been playing really well this year. It was great for us to get a team win like that.”

Monday’s victory, coupled with Saturday’s triumph over Chicago, gives the Preds a much better feeling after starting the homestand 1-2-0. Nashville has continued to find ways to win more often than not, especially with a number of key players out of the lineup,

“The guys that are out, we obviously miss them with the two good hockey teams that have just come in here,” Ellis said. “We have been responding with our depth and a lot of guys are really stepping up and they have played well tonight and in the previous game as well. We are going to need more of that with the bodies that we are missing.”

Right in the Wheelhouse:

Just as he always is, Predators defenseman Ryan Ellis has been the first one on the ice prior to practices and morning skates all season long.

However, the right-handed blueliner has been putting a noticeable emphasis on practicing his shot – particularly one-timers from the top of the left circle – over the past few weeks. It seemed as though it would be a matter of time before the work paid off.

At 16:25 of the first period on Monday, Ellis unleashed a bomb into the twine.

Just his second goal of the season – and first with a goaltender in the net – gave Ellis a reason to celebrate, one-timing a Roman Josi feed that helped the Preds to their 19th win of the season.

“I haven’t been in that position much this year and it’s my favorite one to be in,” Ellis said. “Hopefully, I can get a couple more goals there. Overall, it was great work by the guys coming in; a couple of good heads-up plays, and we are just going to shoot the puck and see what happens.”

“It was just a matter of time,” Preds Head Coach Peter Laviolette said of Ellis. “We know he can shoot the puck. He’s a big part of our offense. It was nice to see him get one like that. I thought the power play did a really good job of just getting the puck moved around and getting it to where we want it. It’s nice to see him get rewarded with that.”

One of the pillars in the Nashville locker room, everyone knows how much Ellis means to the club on the defensive side of the puck. But there is also an offensive side to the associate captain, and if Monday’s results can provide a spark in that department, there’s no limit to what No. 4 can do.

“He’s like another goalie,” Rinne said of Ellis. “I don’t know how many saves he has over the years, but [it was] a huge goal – a bomb… It was a bomb and [he’s] a well-deserving guy to put the puck in the net. This team, we need to see him scoring and so it was nice to see that happening. He’s such a big part of this team and big part of our power play.”

“He has been playing so well,” Josi said of Ellis. “He is shooting so many pucks and getting a lot of great looks. That’s how it goes, sometimes you don’t get rewarded for it, but he has been playing great. He kept going and he kept shooting and after that, they’re going to come for him.”

Notes:

Prior to Monday’s game, the Predators reassigned forward Anthony Richard to Milwaukee (AHL) after the rookie forward made his NHL debut on Saturday night.

Nashville centerman Nick Bonino returned to the lineup on Monday after missing Saturday’s game due to illness.

The Predators have now earned at least a point in nine of their last 11 meetings with the Sabres (8-2-1).

With the homestand complete, the Predators will now head north of the border to Western Canada for dates in Vancouver on Thursday and Calgary on Saturday before returning home next week.

Titans Keep Playoff Hopes Alive

SENIOR WRITER/EDITOR Titans online.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Things didn’t look good for the Titans for most the game on Sunday.

They trailed from the beginning, until nearly the end.

But in a New York minute, everything changed. The Titans made plays when it mattered most, and pulled out an improbable win.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Titans tight end Jonnu Smith said. “It started out ugly, no doubt. But that’s what this game is about. You just have to keep playing hard, and good things will happen. We battled until the end today.”

The Titans rallied for 26-22 win over the Jets after trailing 16-0 early, and 22-13 heading into the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Marcus Mariota connected with receiver Corey Davis for an 11-yard touchdown with 36 seconds, capping a six-play, 86-yard drive that took 1:10.

It was the 12th game-winning drive in the fourth quarter or overtime in Mariota’s career, and the eighth in the past two seasons. The Titans took over with just 1:46 left, trailing 22-19. Mariota guided a six-play, 86-yard drive that included the third down completion to Davis.

“I believe in every single one of those guys, and I knew the guys up front were going to give us a chance, and the guys outside were going to find a way to get open,” Mariota said. “Guys just made plays, and we were able to get it done. It wasn’t pretty, but sometimes you have to win like that in this league.”

The Titans improved to 6-6 with the win. The Titans face the Jaguars on Thursday night at Nissan Stadium.

Preds win BIG

It was a classic Saturday night in Smashville.

Eeli Tolvanen scored his first NHL goal and the Nashville Predators defeated the Chicago Blackhawks by a 5-2 final at Bridgestone Arena. The victory ends Nashville’s two-game skid and gives them 18 wins on the season, more than any other club in the Western Conference.

The win was also Predators Head Coach Peter Laviolette’s 200th victory with the Predators, the first time he’s hit the mark with any of the four NHL clubs he’s coached in his career.

After a lackluster effort in a 3-0 loss to Arizona on Thursday that the Predators said wasn’t acceptable, a Saturday night meeting in their own barn against the Blackhawks may have been just what they needed.

“Tonight was 100 percent on the players for their response,” Laviolette said. “For me, the leadership group and the players get the credit. It was a much better game, and I thought under the circumstances, it was one of our best team wins of the year.”

The Predators exploded from the start of Saturday’s skirmish, scoring three goals in the first five minutes of a game for the first time in franchise history.

First, it was Kevin Fiala who potted his fourth of the season at the 2:11 mark, and then Tolvanen roofed a backhand for his first in the NHL at 3:32 to send the crowd into a frenzy once more. Ryan Johansen then chimed in at 4:11 to cap off a feverish opening and make a decisive statement on the night.

“It was exactly what we needed and exactly how we had to come out of the gates,” Johansen said. “It was definitely a huge part in our win tonight.”

Then, Chicago defenseman Duncan Keith wracked up 29 penalty minutes on the same play, leading to an extended Nashville power play. However, it was Brandon Saad who got the Blackhawks on the board when he tallied while shorthanded, but Craig Smith got it back on the man advantage for a 4-1 Preds lead after 20 minutes.

Artem Anisimov scored the lone goal of the second period to give Chicago some life, but Preds goaltender Pekka Rinne was stellar as usual, and Austin Watson sailed a puck into an empty cage as time wound down in regulation to seal the result.

“We had a tough practice [Friday] and everybody was pretty angry,” Fiala said. “Today, we brought it to the game. Everybody was still pissed off about the last game and this was a great response.”

The win came as the Predators continue to battle injury woes as well. With Viktor Arvidsson, Kyle Turris and P.K. Subban already on Injured Reserve, forward Filip Forsberg joined that group prior to Saturday’s game, and center Nick Bonino was also absent against the Hawks due to illness.

With Tolvanen already recalled prior to the game, winger Anthony Richard also got the call and arrived at Bridgestone Arena just in time to suit up for his first NHL contest.

Thanks in part to their efforts, Nashville produced a win that felt just about as good as any of their 18 thus far.

“It’s huge motivation,” Johansen said. “The two young guys we were just talking about (Tolvanen and Richard), we have to step up. Guys need to step up, including myself, including Pekka Rinne and Roman Josi. We need everyone stepping up right now throughout our whole lineup. That’ll be motivation every game.”

Prior to his first game of the season – and fourth NHL contest of his young professional career – 19-year-old Eeli Tolvanen declared he was feeling less nervous and more confident than he ever had before.

Recalled earlier that morning from AHL Milwaukee, Tolvanen tallied his first in the NHL when he took a feed from Craig Smith and backhanded a shot into the twine. The goal helped lead to undoubtedly his most complete night on an NHL ice sheet, one that Tolvanen was happy to produce.

“I felt like I was more comfortable with the game system and all the guys there and the coaching staff,” Tolvanen said. “I’ve been playing in the AHL for two months, and I think it’s helped me a lot with my defensive game and just being more comfortable out there.”

“When he gets those opportunities in front of the net like he did tonight, it shows the talent he has to put the puck in the net,” Laviolette said. “I thought the way he moved up and down the ice was great. He looked more mature and more experienced in this rink with less time and less space. He really worked harder in the areas that he needed to improve on.”

From his first three NHL games in March of last season, Tolvanen impressed his teammates and coaches with a renewed sense of poise, contributing in all areas of the ice throughout the night.

And while it’s a small sample size for a player who is still a teenager, it could also be a sign of what Tolvanen may indeed be capable of at this level for years to come.

“For him, he just has to play with no fear,” Johansen said of Tolvanen. “You just have to go out there and work. Mistakes are going to happen, and you have to make the mistakes, but just go out there when stakes are high and play your game… For him, he just has to do that as much as he can starting off his young career.”

“To me, he looked better and different than he did in training camp,” Laviolette said of Tolvanen. “When it comes down to it, he made really good decisions with the puck and he was good defensively. So, all in all, it was a good night for him.”
