Preds Fall to Avalanche In Finale of Season Series

They had 38 shots on goal, but the Nashville Predators were unable to score, and they fell to the Colorado Avalanche, 5-0, on Saturday evening at Bridgestone Arena. The result stops Nashville’s win streak at two and sees the Preds and Avs split their four-game season series.

In addition to the shot tally, Colorado blocked 19 additional Nashville attempts in the contest, with the Preds left looking to make sense of a game where the score didn’t necessarily reflect the overall effort.

“I didn’t think it was 5-0 game at all; I actually thought we played pretty well,” Preds Captain Roman Josi said. “It felt like we had a lot of chances, and they just capitalized on all of their chances.”

“I don’t have a problem with the way we worked today; I have a problem with the result,” Predators Head Coach Peter Laviolette said. “When you go back at it, there are some things that happened defensively where we tried to be better. At the end of the day, they capitalized on the chances they got.”

Colorado had a 1-0 lead after one period of play thanks to a strike from Nathan MacKinnon roughly three minutes into the contest. The visitors got two more in the second period, first on a power-play goal from Alexander Kerfoot, and that was followed by Gabriel Landeskog with less than two minutes to play in the middle stanza.

The Avalanche added two more in the third before the final horn sounded with Pekka Rinne taking the loss in net, while Philipp Grubauer earned the shutout for Colorado.

“We did some good things, and the bottom line is that Colorado’s goalie stood on his head,” Preds center Ryan Johansen said. “They had some guys make some plays, and our guys didn’t make enough plays.”

The Predators will have the day off on Sunday before returning to the rink on Monday to host the Edmonton Oilers in the final outing of a three-game homestand, and they’ll look to erase Saturday’s contest from the memory banks before heading back out on the road.

“It’s definitely a frustrating loss,” Josi said. “At the end of the day when you lose a game, you’re not satisfied. We have to keep playing hard and put this one behind us.”

“We’re in the business of winning hockey games, and it didn’t happen today,” Laviolette said. “We’ll look at it and we’ll work to be better. There’re a couple of games in the last 15 where I don’t think we competed very hard or we didn’t play very hard; I didn’t think that was the case today. At the end of the day, we’re in our building, it’s a division game and we needed a better result.”

Notes:

With 17,760 in attendance on Saturday, the Preds set a record for a hockey game at Bridgestone Arena.

Matt Irwin and Cody McLeod were scratched for the Preds on Saturday against the Avalanche.

The Predators will conclude their three-game homestand on Monday night when they welcome the Edmonton Oilers to Bridgestone Arena before jetting off to St. Louis to face the Blues on Tuesday.

Nashville SC Drops Preseason Friendly on Rainy Friday Night

Nashville Soccer Club hosted its first game of 2019 on a rainy Friday night at First Tennessee Park, and was challenged by a high caliber MLS club in New York City FC in a 2-0 loss. NYCFC struck twice in the first half, on a penalty kick after a handball and a 25-yard strike from highly-touted forward Alexandru Mitrita.

ANOTHER RAINY NIGHT
It is now a tradition for Nashville SC to play MLS teams in preseason friendlies in the rain. Just over a year after its inaugural game at First Tennessee Park in 2018 against Atlanta United in a monsoon, Nashville SC played in a steady rain on Friday night. Many fans braved the weather to see Nashville take on one of the top MLS sides.

DANGEROUS DPs
New York City FC designated players Maxi Moralez and Alexandru Mitrita proved their value as each scored a first half goal. First it was Moralez who stepped up to the spot and buried the penalty kick past Nashville keeper Matt Pickens in the 28’ minute while new signing Mitrita launched a rocket into the upper corner past an outstretched hand of Pickens to double the lead. From Romania, Mitrita is reported as one of the most expensive MLS signings in league history.

BUILDING MINUTES
In the club’s first three preseason games, most Nashville players stuck to 45 minutes of game play as they gained match fitness. On Friday night, head coach Gary Smith upped the minutes from the starters to 60 with the bulk of the subs coming on the 61’ minute.

MLS SIGNINGS MAKE HOME DEBUT
Both of Nashville SC’s first MLS signings, Cameron Lancaster and Daniel Ríos made their debuts in front of the home fans. Lancaster started and played 60 minutes while Ríos came on at halftime and played the final 45. The pair played together for 15 minutes marking the first time this preseason Lancaster and Ríos played together

UP NEXT
Nashville SC will be back in action in the Music City when it plays Lipscomb University on its campus on Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. The Bisons are coming off an NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2018. Tickets are available at lipscombsports.com/tickets

Turris, Josi Tally as Preds Top Kings

Roman Josi

Roman Josi scored the game-winner for the second consecutive outing, and the Nashville Predators defeated the Los Angeles Kings by a 2-1 final on Thursday night at Bridgestone Arena.

It’s Nashville’s second-straight win overall, and with the two points in the standings, the team is back in first place in the Central Division – one point ahead of the Winnipeg Jets.

Kyle Turris also scored on the evening – a power-play goal to give Nashville the all important first lead against a Los Angeles team that had lost five straight entering the night. The Preds were expecting a tight-checking affair, and that’s exactly what they got, with Pekka Rinne and his mates only allowing L.A. a little life 50 minutes into the contest before shutting them down once more.

“Getting the first goal was good,” Predators Head Coach Peter Laviolette said. “We played two really strong periods in the first and second. The chances were where we wanted them to be. We had some good looks, and the game was just tight. Their goaltender played well. They’re a good defensive team, they have good structures, and we just stuck with it.”

“It’s a big win,” Rinne said. “I think all-in-all, it was a great effort. We had to lock it down in the third and I thought that we did. We didn’t give up a lot of chances. They ended up hitting the post right at the end there but other than that, we did a really good job.”

Turris had a new face on his line with Viktor Arvidsson jumping onto his wing, while Kevin Fiala moved up with Filip Forsberg and Ryan Johansen. Laviolette stated postgame that making the switch allowed him to get a look at some combos that hadn’t been tried yet, and in particular, Turris saw the benefits.

“He was one of our most noticeable players with his speed and the offense he brought to the game,” Laviolette said of Turris. “Viktor Arvidsson jumping down there did a good job. He had a good game. To me, that line was quick and pretty good. Kyle played a strong game for us.”

The Predators converted on their first power-play opportunity of the evening, and it was Turris who one-timed home his first goal since returning from injury on Feb. 7. The tally gave the Preds a 1-0 advantage through 20 minutes, and early in the second, the captain scored again.

Two nights after Josi potted two in Dallas, he struck at 46 seconds of the middle stanza when he roofed a shot past Jonathan Quick to give his club a two-goal lead.

It was Josi’s 12th multi-point outing of the season, and with a helper on Turris’s goal, he recorded his 50th point of the season to become the first defenseman in Predators franchise history to record at least 50 points in four separate seasons.

“It was a pretty complete game,” Josi said. “We talked about having some consistency and having a couple good games in a row. I thought we played two good games, and now we have to focus on the next one and do it again.”

Michael Amadio broke Rinne’s shutout midway through the third, but that was as close as the Kings came, with the Nashville netminder stopping 28 of 29 shots he faced on the evening.

The Predators started the week with a 5-3 win in Dallas on Tuesday night, and from the time that game ended until this one began, the key word was consistency. Nashville wanted nothing more than to follow that victory up with another solid outing, and they were ready to go from the start.

“We talked about the speed a lot, but you have to have that,” Rinne said. “Every team in the League nowadays play a fast game. We had that, and I thought we came out really well, played with that quickness and physical play. We talked about following up from the Dallas game. It’s nice to win two in a row, and hopefully we can start making some noise and put a streak together.”

The effort was good enough to vault them back atop their division, and while that placement could come to an end as early as Friday night, the view is still a desirable one, another taste of where they’d like to be when the regular season is all said and done.

“It’s such a good division,” Josi said. “You always want to move up on the leaderboard. Obviously, we’ve got some games ahead, but for now we’re in first and we’re going to play hard to stay there.”

Notes:

Prior to Thursday’s game, the Predators placed forward Craig Smith on Injured Reserve with a lower-body injury. The team also recalled forward Tyler Gaudet from Milwaukee of the AHL.

Yannick Weber, Frederick Gaudreau and Gaudet were scratched on Thursday.

Overall, the Preds have only lost once in regulation to the Kings in their last 17 meetings (10-1-6), with Nashville winning five straight from Nov. 2, 2013 to March 14, 2015.

At home, Nashville has earned a point in nine of its last 10 contests vs. Los Angeles (7-1-2).

Nashville’s three-game homestand continues on Saturday afternoon when the Colorado Avalanche come to town for a special 4:30 p.m. (CT) puck drop at Bridgestone Arena. The NHL Trade Deadline then hits on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. before the Preds host the Edmonton Oilers later that evening.

Nashville’s MLS Logo and Team Name Revealed on Wednesday

Hey Nashville, welcome to the new sound of soccer.

At a uniquely Nashville party at Marathon Music Works on Wednesday evening, Nashville Soccer Club was unveiled as the name of Nashville’s new Major League Soccer (MLS) team. The MLS colors, crest and inaugural season hashtag #BandTogether were also launched as a part of the event, hosted by sports personality Sara Walsh. After the announcement, local Nashville bands Judah and the LionThe Weeks, and Lindsey Ell played live music for the 2,000 fans in attendance.

Nashville SC is currently playing in the USL Championship for the 2019 season and will begin play in Major League Soccer for the 2020 season.

In deciding a team name and colors, majority owner John Ingram and the rest of the Nashville SC ownership group turned to fans for their input, and the fans spoke loud and clear on what they wanted – to keep the name of Nashville’s pro soccer team Nashville SC and keep gold as the team’s primary color.

“Since I first got involved in this effort, I have said that I wanted to do something ‘In Nashville, for Nashville, with Nashville.’ This team will always be about the fans and creating a team and brand that they are proud to support,” said Ingram. “The Nashville SC name and primary gold color, along with the themes of sound and energy in the logo, embody our city and our fans who have been with us from the start.”

While Nashville SC’s MLS colors are officially “Acoustic Blue” and “Electric Gold,” the gold will be Nashville’s distinguishing color, being worn at home and as often as possible on the road, making Nashville SC immediately recognizable.

“We wanted a name and an identity that was authentic in the sport. It says exactly who we represent and who we are, Nashville Soccer Club,” said Nashville MLS CEO Ian Ayre. “Our announcement is another step forward, and we have many others to take, but it is important to start that with a clear identity of who we are. Gold is our primary club color, and we need to own that color in the sport. As we grow as a team we want to be recognizable by our color, our name and our values as a club.  It was important to us that we started that by bringing the brand to life in a uniquely Nashville setting with our supporters, our partners, our owners, Major League Soccer and everyone who made this possible, and of course with music! Throughout 2019, we will be doing our best to bring everyone along on our journey as we #BandTogether Nashville and Soccer on our march to MLS.”

Nashville SC will play its first home preseason friendly for the 2019 USL Championship season on Friday against future MLS foe New York City FC at First Tennessee Park at 7 p.m. Tickets to the match along with full 2019 USL Championship Season Ticket Memberships are still available at NashvilleSC.com/tickets.

Lady Bucks Clinch No. 2 Seed in TCCAA/Region VII Tournament with Win over Southwest Tennessee

The Motlow State Lady Bucks clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming TCCAA/Region VII basketball tournament by beating Southwest Tennessee 92-87 Saturday night at Copperweld Arena in the season’s final home game.

Motlow (10-5, 18-10) stands alone in second place behind defending champion Walters State and two games ahead of Roane State. The Lady Bucks will close out the regular season with a trip to Jackson State Wednesday night. The TCCAA/Region VII Tournament will begin March 1 in Cleveland, TN.

Saturday was Sophomore Recognition Day, and the Lady Bucks honored Racquel Robinson and Janna Lewis. Lewis, who has scored over 1,000 points and gathered over 500 rebounds in her fantastic Motlow career, led the Lady Bucks with 32 points and 11 rebounds along with three steals.

Motlow trailed for much of the first three quarters on Saturday, falling behind 24-22 after one quarter and 44-38 at intermission. The Lady Bucks finally caught the visitors with a minute remaining in the third quarter and led 64-63 heading into the final stanza. Motlow never trailed again.

The Lady Bucks overcame a difficult shooting performance, hitting only 37.9 percent of their shots from the field, including 6-29 three pointers. Driving into the lane at every opportunity, Motlow shot an amazing 46 free throws and hit 36, including 20-25 by Lewis and 10-11 by Starasia Bell-Freeman.

Bell-Freeman, a freshman from New Bern, N.C., had one of her best games of the season with 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Tanisia Murphy scored 17 points and added four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Taylor Holcomb and Dominique Fields each scored eight points and Katie Thomas added five.

Motlow has now won five of its previous six games, with the only loss coming on the road at Walters State. The Lady Bucks beat Dyersburg State 106-84 last Wednesday, with Lewis scoring 29 points and pulling in 15 rebounds, Bell-Freeman adding 28 points and 10 rebounds, and Dominique Fields recording one of the few triple-doubles in Motlow basketball history with 17 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds.
