FOOTBALL: Westwood hits on big plays in final preseason tune up

Westwood hit on a few big plays Friday evening in their final preseason tune up of the fall.

The middle school Rockets played a 40-minute running clock with Forrest and ended up losing 32-22, for whatever the score is worth. But big plays were a highlight for WMS.

Kaysen Lowery connected on a 27-yard pass to Matthew White that set up a 1-yard touchdown run from John Kohls. Later, Lowery broke loose on a 48-yard scamper to put the Rockets in the end zone again. Then Gabe Hambly got loose on a 16-yard run for the Rockets’ final score of the day.

On the flip side, the Rocket defense struggled to stop big plays. Forrest scored on plays of 58, 48, 38 and 60.

Westwood will open the regular season this Thursday, Aug. 11 at Cannon County. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.

White team comes out on top of annual Westwood intra squad

The White Team won bragging rights Thursday night at the annual Westwood Middle School Blue-White Intra Squad game. Team White picked up a 48-24 win.

Kaysen Lowery played quarterback for both teams and, expectedly so, racked up some impressive numbers. Lowery threw for three touchdowns and ran for 3 scores. He connected twice with Matthew White and once with Keller Hatfield. White also had a 70 yard pick six that went the other way for a score in the game.

Also scoring one touchdown apiece for the Rockets were John Kohles, Elijah Vernon, Caleb Hill and Gabe Hambly.

The Rockets will open the regular season next week.

CMS football drops opener; Westwood volleyball wins Thursday

Thursday was the opener for a couple of area middle school fall sports teams.

The Westwood Rocket volleyball team got off to a good start, improving to 1-0 and getting coach Hayley Banks her first career win as a middle school head coach by dropping Community in straight sets: 25-22 and 25-23. Meanwhile, the JV Lady Rockets fell 11-25 and 12-25.

It was not as good of a night for the CMS Raider football team. The Raiders were down 34-0 at the half and were unable to recover. (see photo gallery below)

Coffee Middle football, Westwood volleyball open up seasons Thursday; Rocket football to host Blue-White game

A couple of middle school fall sports will get out of the blocks on Thursday.

The Coffee Middle Football team will open the season with a non-conference bout against West Wilson Thursday, Aug. 4. Kick off is set for 6:30 p.m. at Carden-Jarrell field in Manchester (865 McMinnville Highway, behind Raider Academy).

Meanwhile, Westwood Rockets volleyball will open the season with their first regular season match under new head coach Hayley Banks. The Lady Rockets host Community at approximately 6:30 p.m Thursday, Aug. 4 at Joel Vinson Gymnasium.

And behind Westwood at Dyer-Bouldin Field, the Westwood Rocket football team will host its annual Blue-White Intrasquad Scrimmage at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. It will be the first Blue-White game under new head coach Justin Kanjanabout. It is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the Rockets.

Braves sign Austin Riley to 10-year extension; trade Will Smith

Life is good for Austin Riley. The Braves third baseman ended July by breaking one of Hank Aaron’s records and he started August by learning he’ll have a chance to stay in Atlanta for at least another decade.

Riley and the Braves agreed to a 10-year, $212 million contract on Monday. This deal, the most lucrative in franchise history, includes a $20 million option for 2033, when the All-Star slugger will be 36 years old.

“How he plays the game and the consistency with which he does everything, is unbelievable,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “He does everything right and checks all the boxes to be that guy.”

As Riley has established himself as one of the game’s best players over the past two years, he has given the Braves reason to make him one of their cornerstones. First baseman Matt Olson is signed through 2029, right fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. has a club option through 2028 and Ozzie Albies has a club option through 2027.

The Braves also announced they acquired veteran outfielder Robbie Grossman from the Tigers in exchange for LHP Kris Anglin. Around the same time that deal was announced, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand was among those reporting the Braves were nearing a deal that would send left-handed reliever Will Smith to the Astros for veteran starter Jake Odorizzi. That deal was finalized on Tuesday morning.

The Odorizzi trade is a significant one for the Braves, who have wanted to add insurance to their rotation. Grossman provides the defending World Series champions a left fielder who has had great success against left-handed pitchers.
