Sounds Clipped by Cubs on Opening Day

After a one-hour, 28-minute rain delay to begin the season, the Nashville Sounds came up short against the Iowa Cubs in a 5-4 Opening Day loss in front of 7,475 fans at First Tennessee Park.

Ian Happ’s big day at the plate was enough for Iowa. The Cubs center fielder delivered a go-ahead three-run double in the fifth inning and finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and a stolen base. Despite a late charge by Nashville in the ninth, the Cubs never relinquished the lead.

Nolan Fontana and Carlos Tocci paired to give the Sounds an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Fontana doubled and Tocci knocked him in with a single through the right side.

Sounds starter Taylor Hearn was cruising along when he ran into trouble in the top of the fifth. Zack Short, Taylor Davis and Dixon Machado had three consecutive singles to load the bases with nobody out. Hearn struck out Trent Giambrone for out number one, but Happ struck with the bases-clearing double to give Iowa a 4-1 lead.

The bottom half of Nashville’s lineup was back at it again in the sixth when Danny Santana started the frame with a double down the right field line. After moving to third on a groundout, Santana scored on Fontana’s sacrifice fly to make it a 4-2 game.

After collecting six hits in the first three innings, Nashville’s offense went cold until the final frame.

Willie Calhoun’s bases loaded walk with one out pulled the Sounds within a pair of runs at 5-3. Dillon Maples bounced back to strike out Matt Davidson for the second out of the inning before being relieved by Dakota Mekkes.

The second Cubs reliever of the inning walked Patrick Wisdom to make it a one-run game. The rally fell short when Mekkes finished the game by getting Danny Santana to groundout to first.

Hearn was charged with the loss despite pitching well. He allowed four runs in five innings while racking up nine strikeouts.

Coffee County CHS Baseball Falls to Tullahoma

Bryson Hullett of CHS baseball

Hosting their fiercest rival Tullahoma on Tuesday, the Coffee County Central High School baseball team returned to district play.  In a game you heard here on Thunder Radio, the Red Raiders jumped on the Wildcats early only to see Tullahoma rally to capture the 16 to 3 win.

Coffee County jumped out to a 3 to 0 lead in the first inning as they used a double, 2 singles and 2 walks to grab the early lead.   An error and an apparent missed call by the field umpire in the 3rd inning seemed to stunt the Raiders momentum.  Tullahoma scored once in the 3rd before adding 15 runs in the next 4 innings to grab the win.

Bryson Hullett and Hayden Skipper each finished the game with doubles as Hullett’s RBI double in the first inning drove in the last Coffee County run.  Bryson Hullett was named the Crazy Daisies player of the game.

The Red Raiders travel to Tullahoma on Wednesday night for the 2nd game in the season series.  First pitch is set for 6 PM.  Thunder Radio will be on hand to bring you the broadcast with Lucky Knott on the call.  Thunder Radio’s live coverage begins with the pregame show at 5:50.

Coffee County CHS Soccer Grabs Win over Franklin County in Home Opener

Hosting their first regular season home match of the year, the Coffee County CHS soccer team welcomed district foe Franklin County to the Raider Soccer Field on Tuesday. The Raider defense pitched a shutout as Coffee County grabbed the 1 nil district win.

After playing for more than an hour, Coffee County got on the board with less than 10 minutes remaining.  Francesco Alzate got an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute to provide all the offense the Red Raiders would need.  The win levels the Raiders record in district play at 1 and 1.

The Red Raiders are back at home on Thursday when they welcome DeKalb County to the Raider Soccer Field.  That match will kick off at 7 PM.

Coffee County Softball Falls to Cascade

Katie Rutledge of CHS softball

The Coffee County Central High School softball team traveled to Wartrace on Tuesday for a non-district battle with Cascade.  Coming off a huge district win at Lawrence County on Monday, the Lady Raiders saw a late lead slip away in a 10 to 4 loss to the Lady Champions.

Coffee County took a 3 to 2 lead in the 4th inning and added an insurance run in the 5th to go on top 4 to 2.  But Cascade rallied for 6 runs in the 5th inning before adding a pair of insurance runs in the 6th.

The Lady Raiders banged out 11 hits on the night led by Katie Rutledge who was 4 for 4 with a solo home run.  Keri Munn and Haley Richardson each added 2 singles while Justus Turner ripped a double.  Gracie Pippenger had a 2 RBI single for the Lady Raiders.

Next up for the Lady Raiders, a trip to Alabama this weekend for the Bob Jones Tournament.  Coffee County will begin their Huntsville trip with a Thursday game in Athens against Athens High School.  That game will be played at Palmer Park and first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 PM.
